Between 1945 and 2000,educatrs emplyed a fairly unifrm apprach. The teacher was the sun in the classrm, and all lessns and activities centered arund him r her.Educatrs stressed the imprtance f discipline and bedience(服從) within the classrm, and students were expected t fllw very rigid standards fr behavir and academic perfrmance. The stated gal f this mdel was t ensure fairness by applying the same expectatins;hwever, the result was that nly a few students succeeded while many thers were left behind.
When cmputers and Internet technlgy entered the classrm a few decades ag,anther pattern appeared and prgressive educatrs immediately saw the pprtunity t change the way schl wrked.Instead f needing t fcus n the teachers fr the vast majrity f the day, students culd use cmputers, websites, and even games t learn new materials and imprve their skills and knwledge.Nt all educatrs welcmed this shift, hwever,as sme believed it tk pwer and respnsibility away frm the teachers and cheapened the educatinal experience fr learners.
Over the last decade,tw distinct camps f educatrs have emerged.Tech advcates stress that cmputers and Internet technlgy allw students t learn at their wn pace in an envirnment that makes them feel cmfrtable, while the traditinal classrm sets a pace that many learners can't keep up with and ften makes students feel uncmfrtable.Traditinalists,n the ther hand, believe that ver-reliance n tech limits students' ability t develp their wn knwledge and skills and des little t prepare them fr the realities f being adults in the real wrld.

The bamb is then heated with a lamp t create the apprpriate curvature fr the cage, befre being put thrugh small hles in the bttm f the cage. Skilled artists carve patterns n the cage?s bttm and feet t create an amazing visual effect.
Fr Chan, he cnsiders birdcage-making his life?s wrk. Despite the decline in ppularity, Chan decides t stay in this industry. He has taken n eight students frm varius prfessins. He believes that with the previus generatin passing n their knwledge and the next generatin willing t take up the art, the traditin f birdcage-making can be preserved and cntinued.

In March, the water between Canada and Greenland, called Baffin Bay, is cvered with sea ice. Scientists in a helicpter fly ver, searching fr narwhals (獨(dú)角鯨). The narwhal is ne f the mst mysterius whale species n Earth. Each male sprts a single tusk (長(zhǎng)牙) 6 t 10 feet lng. Narwhals are the nly whales with tusks. They feed n fish, squid and shrimp. By staying under the ice, they avid killer whales and ther predatrs.
The helicpter lands n the frzen cean, and Dr. Jens Kblitz climbs ut. He studies animal sunds at the Bi Acustics Netwrk. And he wrks with Dr. Kristin Laidre, a bilgist wh studies mammals that live in the Arctic.
Dr. Kblitz lwers a weighted line int the icy water Attached t the line are 16 underwater micrphnes strung tgether, abut a yard apart. Each sund frm a narwhal hits each micrphne at a slightly different time. When Dr. Kblitz recrds, he captures infrmatin abut hw the whales dive and rise as they hunt fr fd.
“The windchill is minus 5 t minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit. I have t quickly get everything back inside the helicpter s my equipment isn’t destryed by the cld and ice,” he says.
Narwhals use echlcatin. The whales buzz, click, and creak. When that sund wave hits an bject, like a fish, it bunces back, prducing an ech. They use snar t find hles in the ice and prey in the dark.
But as the average glbal temperature increases, the Arctic ice is shrinking. The narwhal will face a severe threat as the ice melts. Fr centuries, sea ice has blcked mst ships frm the Arctic Ocean. But scientists predict the cean will be ice-free in a few decades. Then ships will ram the narwhals habitats. The nise f the ships may drwn ut the whales’ clicks.
Dr. Laidre says, “If we understand what sunds they use, we can better understand hw human impacts.” That understanding can shw humans hw t help narwhals survive.
