A newly described species f tardigrades, als knwn as water bears, is giving scientists insights int what makes these tiny creatures s resistant t radiatin.
Tardigrades, mstly less than l millimeter in length with their sausage-shaped bdies and fur pairs f shrt, unjinted legs, have lng interested scientists with their ability t withstand extreme cnditins, including radiatin. There are arund 1,500 knwn tardigrade species, but nly a handful are well-studied. Nw, Lingqiang Zhang, a bilgist at the Beijing Institute f Lifemics, and his cwrkers have sequenced (測序) the genetic grup f a species new t science, and revealed sme secrets f their radiatin-resisting pwers.
Arund six years ag, Zhang and his cwrkers ventured int Funiu Muntain in China’s Henan prvince t cllect mss samples. Back in the labratry and under the micrscpe, they identified a previusly undcumented species f tardigrade, which they named Hypsibius henanensis.
When the researchers expsed H. henanensis t radiatin levels f 200 and 2, 000 grays — far beynd what wuld be survivable fr humans — they fund ne f the genes, called TRIDI, edits a prtein that helps t repair duble-strand breaks in DNA by gathering specialized prteins at sites f damage. “This is a new gene that, t my knwledge, n ne was studying, ” says Bb Gldstein, a cell bilgist at the University f Nrth Carlina.
The researchers als estimate that 0.5 — 3.1% f the tardigrade’s genes were acquired frm ther rganisms thrugh a prcess knwn as hrizntal gene transfer (轉(zhuǎn)移) . A gene called DODA1, which seems t have been acquired frm bacteria, enables tardigrades t prduce betalains, which can mp up sme f the harmful reactive chemicals that radiatin causes t frm inside cells.
The researchers believe their insights culd be used t help prtect astrnauts frm radiatin during space missins, clean up nuclear pllutin r imprve cancer treatment. “We are still lacking knwledge f different tardigrade species ut there. These animals have “a surce f prtectants that will prbably keep puring ut mre that will be useful and interesting t understand,” says Gldstein.

這里考查謂語動(dòng)詞,effrts與make之間是被動(dòng)關(guān)系,再根據(jù)S far可知,句子應(yīng)用現(xiàn)在完成時(shí)的被動(dòng)語態(tài),其結(jié)構(gòu)為“have/has been + 過去分詞”,主語effrts是復(fù)數(shù),助動(dòng)詞用have。故填have been made。
故填an。
故填what。
