Emtins (情感) are an essential part f hw we experience ur wrld. We humans can express emtins by telling thers hw we feel—but what abut animals? Since animals cannt tell us hw they feel, hw can we knw whether they experience emtins? Researchers have nly started t find ut truth abut this in the past few decades.
The mst easily nticeable reactin f an animal t an event is hw it changes its behaviur. Humans ften change facial expressins and gestures depending n whether we experience a pleasant event r nt. If yu lk at yur friends’ faces, yu can ften very quickly tell if they are happy, fearful, r angry. Animals shw these characteristic facial expressins as well! S-called grimace scales (表情量表) fr hrses, pigs, sheep, rats, and cats have already been develped. Fr example, changes in ear psitin, the amunt f visible eye white, and tensin in the chewing muscles can indicate different levels f pain r fear in animals.
Anther example f animal behaviur that is linked t emtins invlves vcalisatins (發(fā)聲), such as grunts, bleats, and ms, which can indicate stress in many species. We knw this is true fr humans t: imagine yu are singing a sng in frnt f many peple; yur vice might get shaky if yu are nervus r experiencing stage fright. Researchers have fund that the vcalisatins f pigs, gats, and cws als change and get less harmnius when these animals are under stress. Fr example, when they are separated frm the grup, they prduce the sund that indicates negative emtins
The evidence f emtins in animals might encurage us t rethink the envirnments in which we keep the animals that are under ur care—n farms, in zs, r in ur huses. If we can better understand hw animals interact and react t their envirnments, we can ultimately imprve these envirnments, and thus imprve human-animal relatinships. It must be ur ethical gal t decrease the negative emtins these animals experience, as well as t increase their experience f psitive emtins.
32. What is the text mainly abut?
A. The behaviural habits f animals.
B. The emtinal lives f animals.
C. A study f human-animal relatinships.
D. Ways t imprve emtinal intelligence f animals.
33. What is the purpse f develping grimace scales?
A. T make ut hw animals truly feel.
B. T determine whether animals are hungry.
C. T develp animals’ ability t shw emtins.
D. T measure different levels f happiness in animals
34. What can we knw abut animals’ vcalisatins?
A. Vcalisatins are a clear sign f animals’ lneliness.
B. Vcalisatins are unique and natural in animals.
C. Humans can get benefits frm the vcalisatins.
D. Animals’ stress can be shwn thrugh the vcalisatins.
35. Why is it imprtant t understand hw animals experience emtins?
A. It makes the ties between humans and animals better.
B. It helps animals adapt t new envirnments quickly.
C. It decreases the psitive emtins that animals experience.
D. It imprves the interactin between animals and their envirnments.

Learning that next week will witness the Festival f English Arts and Culture themed “Share Chinese stries in English”, I wuld like t ffer sme suggestins.
Persnally, a Chinese idim strytelling cmpetitin will be an excellent chice, in which students can share educatinal stries behind varius idims. Additinally, I highly recmmend hlding a pster design cntest featuring Chinese fables.
Nt nly will these cmpetitins aruse students’ interest t engage in them, but als strengthen participants’ ral and written English skills. Mrever, we students can raise awareness f prtecting and carrying frward traditinal Chinese culture.
Wish the festival a huge success!
Yurs,
Li Hua
第二節(jié)(滿分25分)
I went dwnstairs, nly t find Dad was already up, reading a newspaper. “Mrning, Dad, yu are s early.” I greeted him. Dad lked up frm his newspaper, saying, “Mrning! Hw abut us ding sme practices fr tday’s spelling cntest?” Hearing this, I nearly jumped up, since fr a spelling bee, nthing culd bring me mre calmness. With Dad raising questins, I spelt every wrd crrectly, even ne wrd with 13 letters. Nt nly did it hugely lift my spirits, but als surely relieved my anxiety. Well prepared fr the cntest. I went t schl in a light md.
Finally came the cntest. All cmpetitrs were n the stage under the gaze f students and teachers. Slightly nervus as I was, I quickly fund sme inner peace. Several runds later, nly Nathan and I were left and there were nly tw mre chances. “Rhetric,” said the hst and everyne present held their breath, including me. “R-e-t--r-i-c.” spelled Nathan. “I am srry. Nathan. If yur cmpetitr answered next questin crrectly, she wuld win.” Anxius but slightly delighted. I listened carefully fr my wrd. “Mathematician!” “M-a-t-h-e-m-a-t-i-c-i-a-n.” I was able t spell it even thugh I was nt int math at all. At this mment, the audience brke int deafening applause.
