At least, that’s the way we saw it as Gerge finished tying the string t the red, heart-shaped bx. We giggled(咯咯笑)as Rn added the final tuch: tw plastic red rses, glued t the lid. Gerge practiced pulling the bx by the string. I culdn’t wait t see it fly away when she tried t pick it up.
I was the first t ntice my dad in the drway. I frze. Within secnds, my anxiety was shared by all. Dad walked slwly t the empty candy bx. He picked it up, and watched it swing back and frth. Then he lked int the eyes f the frightened bys.
“It desn’t seem s lng ag that I was playing Valentine’s Day jkes.” he said. “One year my cusins and I decided t pull ne n ur grandma even thugh we lved her. We just wanted t have sme fun. We tipted t her drstep and drew a gift there with red paint. Then we kicked the dr and hid behind the bushes. When Grandma finally appeared, she lked dwn and reached fr the fresh paint. Slwly, she figured ut ur jke. She smiled, absently wiping red paint n her clean and white aprn(圍裙).”Dad paused and fr the first time I nticed that his eyes were wet. “Grandma died later that year. I never had anther chance t give her a real Valentine.”
Later that night a red heart-shaped bx was placed n Mrs. Hayes’ frnt drstep. As we hid behind the bushes, the cl night air wrapped arund us, adding a chill t ur excitement. “D yu think she’ll scream?” I whispered. “Maybe she’ll think it’s a real gift this time,” Gerge replied, trying t hld back his giggles.
