I began t hate Jane. She seemed s cmfrtable and cnfident, making me feel small. I was upset that Emily didn’t ntice my unease, and I felt like I was fighting t hld nt the nly thing I had. I felt pwerless, like I was standing n a shaky edge.
But then, Jane and I started talking. At first, it was just small talk during grup discussins r quick hells. She’d ask questins that bthered me, and I’d answer shrtly, trying t end the cnversatin. But she’d let my wrds hang, waiting fr me t fill the silence, and smetimes I did.
Gradually, ur cnversatins became less unfriendly. Jane’s sharp wit and ability t cmmand a rm with her laughter started t grw n me. I fund myself laughing alng with the grup, even when I tried t resist.
