Cuntries arund the wrld waste huge amunts f fd every year: 37% f US fd waste cmes frm husehlds, and nearly ne fifth f thse fd items are thrwn away because we aren’t sure hw t understand expiratin dates (保質(zhì)期). In fact, many fds are still safe t eat past their expiratin dates. If the dates n ur fds dn’t tell us that smething’s gne bad, what d they tell us?
Befre the 20th century, fds were sent t us directly frm the farms, and many peple knew hw t tell freshness using sight, smell, and tuch. But when supermarkets began selling prcessed (加工的) fds, prduct ages became harder t judge. S, in the1970s, supermarkets used packaging cdes (包裝代碼) t track hw lng fds had been n the shelves. Later, they used a system that is still ppular tday called Open Dating, which means fd prducers labeled (標(biāo)記) prducts with dates shwing freshness.
In fact, there are usually n rules r any scientific supprt abut what dates t use. Mst supermarkets set these dates early, ensuring custmers will taste their fd at the best and cme back fr mre. This means many fds are safe t eat far beynd their labeled dates. Old ckies, ptates, and ther shelf-stable fds might taste stale (不新鮮的), but they aren’t a health risk. If they g bad, yur nse will let yu knw.
Of curse, ▲ . Sme fds had better be eaten up within the expiratin dates. After the printed dates, ready-t-eat salads, cked meats, cheeses are mre likely t carry bacteria (細(xì)菌) that can still pass a smell r taste test. And the dates fr baby fds must be checked strictly.
Since the expiratin dates smetimes dn’t wrk, the best way t prevent fd waste is t cat what yu buy! And dn’t frget that yur eyes, nse, and tngue are helpful t decide whether the fd is fit fr the table r the trash bin.
8. Hw des the writer lead in the tpic at the beginning?
A. By ding a survey.B. By cmparing facts.
C. By listing numbers.D. By shwing pinins.
9. What des Para 2 mainly tell us?
A. It tells hw the fd expiratin labels develped.
B. It tells hw peple tld the freshness f the fd befre.
C. It tells what system is still used in the supermarket nw.
D It tells what we can knw frm the fd expiratin dates.
10. What can be the best t fill in the ▲ in Paragraph 4?
A. The supermarkets smetimes make mistakes.
B. Yu are better safe than being srry in sme cases.
C. Yu can smell r taste the fd t check the freshness.
D. It’s better nt t waste the fd after the expiratin dates.
11. Which f the fllwing best shws the structure f the passage?
A. ①/②/③④⑤B. ①/②③④⑤C. ①/②③④/⑤D. ①/②③/④⑤
