Like many inventins, language translatrs were imagined by writers lng befre they became real. In Hug Gernsback’s 1911 nvel A Rmance f the Year 2660, characters use a vide telephne that can translate frm ne language t anther. A language translatr als appears in Murray Leinster’s 1945 First Cntact. The idea f the language translatr didn’t becme truly ppular, hwever, until the “universal translatr” appeared in the Star Trek series, which delighted televisin viewers in the 1970s.
