If a wheelchair malfunctins, it’s like a bdy catching a cld. Fr Zhu Siwei, a “wheelchair dctr”, diagnsing (診斷) these issues has becme secnd nature.
At 33, Zhu brught his expertise t the wrld stage in the summer f 2024 at the Paris Paralympics (殘奧會), where he wrked at bth the Paralympic Village and cmpetitin venues. As part f a technical team, Zhu ffered service t athletes and fficials frm arund the glbe, keeping their equipment in tp shape.
Zhu describes hw each technician n the team brings their wn expertise — sme specialize in sewing, thers in welding (焊接). “Many f the technicians frm ther cuntries have years f experience and a deep understanding f wheelchair repair,” Zhu says. “It’s a rare and valuable pprtunity t wrk alngside them.”
In the Paralympic Village, Zhu smetimes fund himself ging beynd his fficial duties. When a mtrized suitcase that an athlete was using fr mbility wuldn’t charge, even thugh it wasn’t his respnsibility, Zhu stepped in t help slve the prblem. He culd sense the athletes’ appreciatin after fixing their wheelchairs, their gratitude unmistakable in their eyes.
With a decade f experience in wheelchair repair, Zhu has bserved the cntinual develpment f the equipment used by disabled individuals. As the wheelchairs change, Zhu recgnizes the imprtance f imprving his repair skills alngside them.
Wang Tiegang, Zhu’s clleague during the Paris Paralympics, has als witnessed firsthand the advancements in equipment fr peple with disabilities. “We’re gradually mving tward high-tech slutins,” Wang says. “This year, we’ve integrated 3D printing technlgy n-site, and new wheelchairs are becming lighter. The demands n welding techniques are als grwing, s we’re cmmitted t nging learning.”
This year, Zhu has taken n a new initiative fr individuals with disabilities. “When a wheelchair breaks dwn, it’s ften much mre challenging fr smene with a disability t g ut and find a repair shp cmpared t able-bdied individuals. They als tend t have their wn circles,” Zhu explains. “We teach them simple repair techniques, enabling them t assist ne anther with basic fixes.”

Tilapia (羅非魚) skin is rich in cllagen (膠原蛋白), a prtein that helps build and repair tissues. Because f this, tilapia skin has becme ppular in medicine. Researchers have used it fr varius treatments, including helping burn victims and fixing prblems related t the stmach and heart.
Inspired by clleagues in ther medical fields, Mirza Mel, an eye dctr fr animals in Brazil, decided t try using tilapia skin t treat eye prblems in dgs. She fcused n eye prblems like crneal ulcers and perfratins, which are cmmn in dgs with shrt nses. “These dgs have eyes sticking ut frm their faces,” she says. “S they get injured ften.”
Nrmally, dctrs treat these eye injuries by placing a piece f hrse placenta (胎盤) ver the damaged area t help it recver. But in 2019, Mel tried using tilapia skin instead. She successfully treated a Shih Tzu (a species f dg) with a severe eye injury.
Brazil’s Burn Supprt Institute and the Federal University f Ceará, which started the Tilapia Skin Prject t treat burns, supprted her wrk. With their help, Mel develped a special membrane (膜) called the acellular dermal matrix (ADM), made frm pure cllagen taken frm tilapia skin.
Cllagen is knwn t help cells grw and repair tissues. Tilapia skin has a high and cnsistent quality f cllagen thrughut the fish’s life, while the quality f hrse placental cllagen can vary depending n the hrse’s age and weight.
S far, Mel has treated ver 400 dgs using tilapia skin. The dgs shwed n pain r infectin after surgery and healed quickly with minimal scarring. Mel is nw planning t use this technique n cats and is even discussing hw t adapt it fr treating human eyes, which are very sensitive and difficult t treat.

C. Their active mvement.D. Their hair’s length.
10. What can we infer abut hrse placental cllagen?
A. It is nly related t hrses’ weight.
B. It is easier t btain than tilapia cllagen.
C. It is nt affected by hrses’ type and weight.
D. It is nt always available at any stage f hrses’ grwth.

When caught in the rain, we have all run fr cver—ften t a nearby tree. On the way, we step ver shrt-lived puddles and hastily frmed streams, marveling at hw quickly the sil changes frm supprtive and predictable t untrustwrthy: slippery, sft, and spngy. At the first chance we tend t flee, skipping further bservatin.
Given that direct bservatins are ften unfeasible, remte bservatin systems are crucial in capturing phenmena that are frequent and unpredictable. Hwever, the Bimbache cmmunity f El Hierr bserved water running dwn tree bark during fg events and captured it fr drinking, washing and agriculture. If mre cntemprary hydrlgists (水文學(xué)家) had watched the raking f fg by trees, frest managers may nt have lgged the Bull Run Watershed, which reduced lcal rainfall by 30%.
Water science faces criticism because f “techn-ptimism that tries t slve all prblems despite nt asking fundamental questins”. In fact, this issue extends beynd water science. An interdisciplinary research team led by Jhn Van Stan frm Cleveland State University argues that scientists shuld g beynd the labratry t directly bserve weather phenmena. The researchers insist that hands-n bservatin f strm events is crucial in cmprehending the cmplexities f wet weather.
“Natural scientists seem increasingly cntent t stay dry and rely n remte sensrs and samplers, mdels, and virtual experiments t understand natural systems. Cnsequently, we can miss imprtant strmy phenmena, imaginative inspiratin, and pprtunities t build intuitin—all f which are critical t scientific prgress,” said Van Stan’s team.
This type f “umbrella science”, they warn, can miss imprtant lcalized events. Fr instance, in describing rainwater’s flw frm the frest treetps t the sils, the authrs nte that “if several branches efficiently capture and carry strm water t the stem, rainwater inputs t near-stem sils can be mre than 100 times greater”. Likewise, water vapr (水蒸氣) cluds trapped beneath frest treetp cvers may escape remte detectin, yet be sensitive t scientists n the grund. On a brader level, these versights can affect grund Earth system mdels, which ften underestimate frest treetp water strage.
Direct bservatin, hwever, has gne beynd making up fr the shrtcmings f “umbrella science”. Van Stan and clleagues see cre value in first-hand strm experiences—nt nly fr natural scientists, but als students studying the impacts f climate change n ecsystems.
12. Hw d peple tend t react t rain?
A. In a defensive manner.B. In a scientific manner.
C. With a wait-and-see attitude.D. With an bservatin-riented attitude.
13. Which f the fllwing wrds can replace the underlined wrd in paragraph 2?
A. Implite.B. Impssible.C. Incnvenient.D. Illgical.
14. What des Van Stan’s research team argue in terms f hands-n bservatin?
A. It is effrtless and precise.B. It is virtual and accepted.
C. It is cmplex yet time-saving.D. It is crucial yet verlked.
15. What will the authr prbably discuss in the paragraph that fllws?
A. The grunds fr starting the research.
B. The scientific value f cnducting the research.
C. The strengths f the research fr learners majring in eclgy.
D. The expert evaluatins f the research acrss disciplines.
