The 97-year-ld btanist, Margaret Bradshaw, is the chief caretaker f Teesdale’s rarest flwers. “Everything abut Teesdale is unique,” says Bradshaw with pride — and the authrity f smene wh has just written a 288-page bk n the subject. They’ve never read it r written it, s it’s been a new experience fr them.”
There are sme challenges in making it accessible thugh. As a spken dialect with many variatins (變體), the written aspect is varius. Hw t crrectly spell is a prblem, because different peple may prnunce it in different ways. Fr example, “nthing” in Yrkshire is “nwt”, but sme peple wuld read “ut”, while in mst f Yrkshire it has mre f an “hwt” sund that is hard t get acrss withut resrting t the rules f prnunciatin.
“I’ve always been fascinated by the Yrkshire dialect,” says Janna Kaye, a retired hst. “When we were children, we learned all Queen’s English. My mther, althugh she taught me t speak prperly, she culd speak in the dialect.”

A few years ag, Oudiette, a cgnitive scientist in France, began questining the definitin f sleep after she and her team cnducted an experiment in which they were able t cmmunicate with peple wh are aware that they are dreaming while they sleep — therwise knwn as clear dreamers. During these peple’s dreams, experimenters were able t ask questins and get respnses thrugh eye and facial-muscle mvements.
Karen Knkly, wh was a c-authr n that study, says “it was a big pen questin in ur minds whether cmmunicatin wuld be pssible with nn-clear dreamers.”
S Oudiette cntinued with the wrk. In her latest study, she and her clleagues bserved 27 peple with narclepsy (嗜睡癥) — characterized by daytime sleepiness and a high frequency f clear dreams — and 22 peple withut the cnditin. While they were sleeping, participants were repeatedly asked t frwn r smile. All f them respnded accurately t at least 70% f these tips. Overall respnse rates were higher fr all participants during REM (rapid eye mvement) sleep, when the deepest sleep ccurs but the brain remains quite active, than during ther sleep stages.
This study is part f a larger advance in the field f sleep research, says Mélanie Strauss,a cgnitive scientist in Brussels. Researchers are mving away frm mnitring sleep mainly with EEG (腦電圖) and twards “fine grained” appraches that cmbine EEG with varius tasks and stimuli — a strategy that culd help t cast light n specific diseases r cnditins, she says.
