When the Eurpean settlement f Nrth America began, there was intense cnflict between settlers frm verseas and these native peple. In 1830, frmer US president Andrew Jacksn signed the Indian Remval Act. This act required all Indians t migrate t west f the Mississippi River t allw fr the expansin f the US. American Indians were treated as a military “enemy” until 1924, when the few Indians still alive at that pint were granted US citizenship. That was the first time that the US gvernment frmally recgnized the rights f Indians.
While the stry f the American Indians has been a sad ne, their legacy is still felt every day in the US. Many US gegraphical names cme frm Indian languages, such as Ohi, Tpeka, Kansas and the Ptmac River. Culture, by which scientists mean that animals learn frm each ther t vercme prblems, seems t be increasingly cmmn acrss the animal kingdm. Alice Bridges, a behaviral eclgist at Anglia Ruskin University in England, wndered whether insects like bumblebees might have a capacity fr it, t.
T study culture in bumblebees in the lab, she built a puzzle bx ut f Petri dishes (培養(yǎng)皿) with a reward f super sweet sugar water at the bttm f it. Bridges cut a small hle in the lid t create a spinning tp that can be turned by pushing the red dt clckwise r the blue dt cunter-clckwise. Then, she trained sme bees t push the red dt t get the sugar water and thers t push the blue dt. Next, Bridges put these trained bees int different clnies (群體) alng with the puzzle bxes.
It wasn’t all fun and games, hwever, and the experiment ultimately played itself ut. In clnies where the tutr bee had riginally learned t push the red dt, the ther bees in the clny usually pushed the red dt. In clnies where the tutr bee was trained t push the blue dt, their fellw bees tended t d the same. In the cntrl clnies where there were n tutrs, the bees smetimes learned hw t pen the bxes, but never as efficiently r reliably.
The cnclusin is that bumblebees can pass n certain behavirs. Hwever, because bumblebee clnies cllapse befre winter, there’s little chance a traditin culd get passed dwn frm generatin t generatin. S, Bridges is planning future wrk n insects whse clnies last fr years, like stingless bees.
That truth, summarizes Whiten, a cgnitive zlgist at the University f St Andrews in Sctland, is that all we have discvered abut animal culture means that human culture, nce thught unique, did nt emerge ‘ut f the blue’ but has bviusly built n deep evlutinary fundatins.”
32. Hw was Alice Bridges’ study cnducted?
A. By analyzing the data.
B. By bserving the tutr bees.
C. By studying the previus experiment.
D. By cmparing the results in different grups.
33. What des the phrase “play itself ut” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Cme t an end. B. Cause cnfusin.
C. Reach a cnclusin. D. Becme entertaining.
34. Why is Alice Bridges turning t insects like stingless bees fr future wrk?
A. Because they may pass dwn traditins acrss generatins.
B. Because they may have mre cmplex cultural behavirs.
C. Because they may be easier t bserve in the lab.
D. Because they may learn mre efficiently.
35. What can we infer frm the passage?
A. Alice Bridges discvered a new species f bees.
B. Animals’ learning behavirs suggest a frm f culture.
C. Bumblebees have the ability t slve cmplex puzzles.
D. Culture n evlutinary fundatins is unique t human.
