The team wrked with fur peple wh are deaf and use ASL and had them repeat gestures up t 15 times while wearing the glve-like device, simultaneusly teaching a machine hw t recgnize them.
The glve has thin, stretchable sensrs made frm "electrically cnducting yarns" that run up each finger and cnvert the mvements int signals. These signals are sent t a "dllar-cin-sized" circuit bard placed n the persn’s wrist, which then wirelessly transfers them ver t a smartphne.
The system was able t recgnize 660 hand mtins and finger placements that stand fr each letter in the English alphabet, different phrases and each number. The algrithm (計(jì)算程序) recgnized the crrect signs abut 99% f the time, and in less than ne secnd — r abut a tne wrd per secnd.
The researchers als placed sensrs in between the participants eyebrws and n the sides f their muths t "capture facial expressins that are a part f ASL". The same exact hand-shape and mvement can ttally change meaning because f the facial expressin that is used t accmpany it. Take the wrd MUCH. The degree f hw much can ttally be determined by the facial expressin alne while the sign stays the same.
Researchers said the glve wuld need t learn mre vcabulary and be able t translate signs faster in rder t get a cmmercial versin f it in stres.
