Peple usually wash their prduce befre eating t remve residue (殘留物) frm pesticides. But are yur fruits and vegetables really clean enugh t eat? Nw 14-year-ld Sirish Subash frm Gergia has wn the 2024 3M Yung Scientist Challenge fr inventing an AI-based handheld pesticide detectr that is very accurate in detecting pesticide residue.
Nw in its 17th year, the cmpetitin supprts middle schl students t think creatively and apply STEM principles t discver real wrld slutins. When the finalists are chsen, they are paired with a 3M scientist wh mentrs them ver the summer t help take their ideas frm just cncepts t mdels.
Sirish’s jurney t winning the award came frm watching his mther washing vegetables and fruits and cautining him t always d s. He wndered whether washing actually made a difference. Since pesticide residues are linked t illnesses like cancer and Alzheimers’s, it’s very imprtant t knw if the fruits and vegetables are safe. That’s hw PestiSCAND is designed.
The device wrks by shining light n the surface f the prduce and measuring the wavelengths that bunce back. PestiSCAND uses a sensr and AI-based prcessr t achieve an accuracy f ver 85 percent. Sirish tested the device n mre than 12,000 fd samples including strawberries, apples, and tmates.
Sirish aims n making this technlgy widely accessible s that cnsumers will be able t make safe fd chices. But he still believes yu shuld wash yur prduce anyway. He plans t use the $25,000 prize frm the cmpetitin t help fund his educatinal gal f attending MIT.
“This year’s Yung Scientist Challenge finalists have demnstrated an incredible ability t develp creative slutins t sme f the wrld’s mst pressing challenges,” Trie Clarke, EVP and chief public affairs fficer at 3M, said in the press release. “I am beynd impressed and inspired by their intelligence and their scientific minds.”

Chinese scientists discvered a rare lunar crystal fund n the near side f the mn, giving scientists hpe f prviding limitless pwer fr Earth. The lunar crystal cntains a key ingredient fr the nuclear fusin (核聚變) prcess, a frm f pwer generatin that uses the same frces that fuel the Sun and ther stars in the galaxy.
One f the primary ingredients fund in this crystal is helium-3, which may prvide a stable fuel surce fr nuclear fusin reactrs. The element is incredibly rare n Earth, but it seems t be fairly prevalent n the mn. China’s next mn missin is expected t be Chang’e 6 in 2024, which will attempt t cllect the first samples frm the far side f the mn, which never faces the Earth.
Fr decades, scientists have been interested in helium-3 and its ptential surce f fuel fr nuclear fusin. Nuclear fusin reactins ccur naturally, when tw light atms cmbine int a heavier ne, under extreme pressure and heat. They take place inside stars, but humans have yet t create a fusin reactr with enugh energy t start the prcess.
Helium-3 prduces significantly less radiatin and nuclear waste than ther elements. The current nuclear fissin (核裂變) prcess, which is used in nuclear pwer plants, releases nt nly energy but radiactivity, and spent nuclear fuel must be reprcessed int waste. It has raised serius safety cncerns, and scientists are searching fr a way t create nuclear pwer frm nuclear fusin, rather than fissin. During the fusin prcess, radiactive waste is nt prduced, ptentially making a safer and mre efficient fuel surce.
Arund 25 tnnes f helium-3, equal t a fully laded Space Shuttle carg bay, culd pwer the US fr a year. Accrding t estimates, this means that helium-3 has a ptential ecnmical value f $3billin a tn. Multiple private cmpanies and cuntries with space agencies have signaled their intentins t mine the mn fr helium-3, and this latest discvery culd kickstart the race.
28. Why is the new discvery imprtant?
A. It cntains a vital element.
B. It prcesses nuclear waste.
C. It casts light n the galaxy.
D. It ttally slves energy crisis.
29. What des the underlined wrd “prevalent” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Active. B. Cmmn. C. Precius. D. Significant.
30. Hw des the authr rganize paragraph 4?
A. By giving pinins. B. By giving examples.
C. By making a cmparisn. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
31. What is the prspect f helium-3?
A. It has ptential risks. B. It has a prmising future.
C. It will be mined illegally. D. It will be stred permanently.

Staring at the bkcases in my study, packed with s many great bks that had remained unread, I heard a lud vice in my head—“Shame n yu! Hw can yu leave these masterpieces unread?”
The first bk I picked up was Mntaigne's Essays. T my surprise I discvered in the margins (頁邊空白) what clearly was my wn faded hand-writing. S I was actually reading it again, but what I was rereading seemed entirely new. I als fund sentences underlined. Only this time I wndered: Why did I underline this sentence? It’s the next ne that is imprtant!
Clearly, my way f reading the text had shifted, and I myself had changed ver the years. This raised the larger questin f rereading. It cmes in many frms. There’s vluntary rereading, the result f a willful decisin t revisit a bk ne has admired, r a bk that has left ne with sme unanswered questins. This kind f planned revisit culd als be fr cnfirming certain details in the text, r fr checking n the mves f a given character. A devted teacher might als wish t refresh his clseness t a wrk, and thus avid teaching thrugh the same ld written ntes with sprific (讓人瞌睡的) effects.
Cntrarily, there’s invluntary rereading. The riginal reading was either frgtten r s ttally absrbed that the new chance encunter with the text prduced surprise and astnishment. My reactin t the renewed reading n lnger crrespnded t the riginal experience, and I was n lnger sure that I recgnized myself as the same reader.
Then there are what ne might call subcnscius (潛意識(shí)的) rereadings, thse that ccur withut the specific act f reading, much as the memry f a tune can keep cming back t the mind withut its actually being heard again. This frm f remembered cntact with a bk can accmpany us during a lifetime and cntinue t strengthen and shape us. Much in the same manner, we may ver the years recite t urselves pems learnt by heart lng ag, which have becme part f ur self-recgnitin.
All f these ways f reading are valuable. Renewed cntact with a nvel r a pem can activate the search fr a better knwledge f the self. The new reading, a frm f revisin, uncvers the change in us. The newness is nt in the text. It is we wh have evlved. In the prcess f rereading, ur utlk has als been significantly changed. Rereading makes it pssible fr us t see the wrld arund us, urselves included, in a new light.
32. What did the authr find when reading Mntaigne’s Essays?
A. He was familiar with it. B. He had made ntes in it.
C. It was a brand new cpy. D. It was his favrite wrk.
33. What culd be a purpse f vluntary rereading?
A. T imprve the quality f teaching.
B. T learn frm admirable characters.
C. T cllect details fr writing nvels.
D. T help making imprtant decisins.
34. Hw des subcnscius rereading affect us?
A. We read bks cnsciusly. B. We enhance reading skills.
C. We strengthen cnnectin with bks. D. We change preferences fr bks.
35. What culd be the best title fr the text?
A. Rereading: Pursuit f Truth
B. Rereading: Vluntary r Invluntary?
C. Transfrmative Pwer f Rereading
D. Accessing Masterpieces thrugh Rereading

A Mther’s Heartfelt Nte f Lve
Everything seemed t change fr me when I entered high schl. In my freshman class, I never saw a single persn I knew frm middle schl. At hme I was just as lnely. My lder brther was a senir, cnsumed with future decisins abut cllege r military life. My little brther didn’t want anything t d with me, “a girl.” My lder sister was utging and never withut her friends. They all fit in, I thught. Why can’t I?
Mm was there waiting fr me. “Karle, yur bedrm’s a disaster. Why can’t yu keep it clean?” The last thing I needed was criticism frm my mther. Clean yur rm. Finish yur dinner. Clean the dishes. What had happened t the mther wh used t snuggle with me n the cuch, reading t me, lving me with cmplete acceptance? I didn’t bther trying t explain my misery. It was easier t sit with my tight-lipped mdiness, hled up in my bedrm.
I sat dwn at my desk and pulled ut my math textbk. I turned t a fresh page in my ntebk and started wrking ut the first prblem. Almst immediately, I saw I’d made a mistake. I tre the paper ut f my ntebk, balled it up in my fist and threw it at the wastepaper basket. By the time I finished my hmewrk, the flr was littered with crumpled (起皺的) paper. Every time I lked at thse crumpled balls, I reminded myself what a failure I was. But my unhappiness stayed hidden away, just like thse mistakes.
One day, I came hme t an empty huse. It was a relief nt t be met with Mm’s latest cmplaint. I went up t my bedrm as usual. When I pened the dr, I frze. It was neat as a pin. Mm had bviusly decided t clean it herself. All the crumpled papers had disappeared. Except ne single sheet. I picked up the sheet and turned it ver.
I recgnized Mm’s perfect handwriting at nce: “Dear Karle, I have nticed yur unhappiness these days and I am srry fr being s critical f yu lately. I will always lve yu and side with yu when yu need my supprt. I expect yu t be the same, sweet self. Lve, Mm.”
