This summer, I marked what sme call a “milestne birthday”. My apprach t birthdays is usually twfld: fear them in advance and bear them in the mment. But this year, I decided t cnfrnt my birthday directly instead f tlerating it awkwardly. Rather than wait t receive cards and gifts, why nt celebrate my birthday by giving presents t thers? Maybe turning traditin upside dwn wuld assuage my discmfrt.
Science was n my side. Studies have fund that spending mney n thers makes us happier than spending mney n urselves. “We bserve this all ver the wrld, even in places where peple are struggling t meet their wn basic needs. Charitable cntributins activate the reward centres f ur brain that spark fr delights such as music and fd,” Elizabeth Dunn, a University f British Clumbia psychlgy prfessr tld me.
Armed with these studies, I began planning my experiment. The gift had t be small enugh t mail in an envelpe and meaningful enugh t tuch hearts. I decided n pencils. I lcated a vendr(商販)in Central Califrnia wh culd custmize pencils. I rdered them in pink t hnur my last name. And I engraved(雕刻)them with three messages abut pencils that duble as messages abut life: Stay sharp. Get t the pint. Erasing is creating.
With my wife, I turned ur kitchen table int a fulfillment centre. We printed labels, slid three pencils int a sleeve and each sleeve int an envelpe. Then, in tw walks t ur neighburhd pst ffice, we sent 98 gifts ut t the wrld.
A few days later,I gt texts and emails frm the pencil recipients(收件者).I heard frm abut three-furths f them that they like the gift. Several peple sent phts f their new pink pencils alng with thanks r birthday wishes. A few tld me hw tuched they were that I thught f them. One persn texted fire and heart emjis.
This exercise deepened my sense f gratitude and cnnectin. Fr a few mments, I frgt I was turning-kay, I'll say the number nw-60.

Britain's nly remaining cal pwer plant will generate electricity fr the last time tday, after perating fr 57 years.
The pwer statin at Ratcliffe in Nttingham shire will cme t the end f its life in line with the gvernment's plicy t phase ut cal pwer, which was first signalled almst a decade ag.
The clsure marks the end f Britain's 142-year histry f cal pwer use, which began when the wrld's first cal-fired pwer statin, the Hlbrn Viaduct in central Lndn, began generating electricity in 1882. The clsure has been regarded as a big milestne in reducing the UK's carbn emissins.
The UK became the first cuntry t set an end-date fr cal pwer frm 2025 after putting in place increasingly strict regulatins t reduce the running hurs f cal plants. Ministers called fr the deadline t cme frward by a year shrtly befre the UK hsted the UN's Cp26 climate talks in Glasgw in late 2021.
Peter O'Grady, the plant manager, said, “This whle year has been a series f sad mments. I'm sure there will be a few tears as the whle thing stps and as peple leave, especially fr me.”
The plant nce emplyed 3,000 engineers but its wrkfrce has declined in line with its pwer utput ver recent years. Cal pwer made up 80% f the UK's electricity in the early1980s, and 40% in 2014, which was due t cstly carbn taxes and the rise f cheap renewables.
Staff were first tld in 2021 that the plant wuld clse in late 2022, but Ratcliffe's wner, the German energy cmpany Uniper, reached an agreement with the gvernment t keep the plant running during the Eurpe-wide gas crisis. Uniper has tried t help engineers int jbs at the cmpany's ther pwer plants r int training that culd lead t wrk in ther areas f the energy industry.
Michael Lewis, Uniper's chief executive, said, “This will be the first time since 1882 that cal has nt pwered Great Britain. We're embracing(擁抱)the future f cleaner and flexible energy.”
28. Why is the cal pwer plant in the UK put t an end?
A. T respnd t the call f the gvernment.B. T turn arund the situatin f lsing mney.
C. T fllw the trend started by ther cuntries.D. T stimulate ther industries t cut carbn emissins.
29. Hw des Peter O'Grady feel abut the clsure f the cal pwer plant?
A. Scared.B. Upset.C. Surprised.D. Pleased.
30. What might have caused the decreased use f cal pwer in the UK ten years ag?
A. The decline f wrkfrce. B. The reductin f cal tax.
C. The develpment f new energies.D. The cnservatin f nn-renewable resurces.
31. What will happen t the engineers f the cal pwer plant in the UK?
A. They will be dismissed. B. They may wrk in ther industries.
C. They will g abrad in search f jbs.D. They may receive cnsiderate arrangements.

Hearing a sng might bring t mind the last time we saw a live band perfrm it. We may remember hearing the sng n a rad trip with high schl friends, and be brught back t the sights, smells, and feelings f that experience. All f these experiences have been referred t as “music-evked(引起)thughts", and recent research has sught t understand why certain thughts ccur in respnse t certain music.
In ne study, my wrkmates and I cmpared thughts evked by instrumental excerpts(節(jié)選)f unfamiliar classical, electrnic, and pp/rck music. Overall, listeners reprted thughts 76 percent f the time. Hwever, the ccurrence f thughts varied acrss music types. Classical and electrnic music evked mre thughts than pp/rck music. This desn't necessarily mean pp/rck music types are unengaging. Rather, types like classical and electrnic music might prvide greater visual mental imagery, whereas pp/rck music might invite listeners t engage in different ways, like dancing r singing alng.
We als fund links related t the cntexts with which we assciate music. Electrnic music tended t evke thughts abut clubbing and vide games, pp/rck music evked thughts abut live perfrmances and driving, and classical music thughts abut mvies and weddings. Classical music led listeners t great capability t imagine fictinal stries, as it was ften cmpsed specifically with the aim f evking an imagined stry.
These cntextual assciatins may vary acrss different cultures. A recent study revealed that fictinal stries reprted while enjying classical music were highly similar in tw grups f yung adults in the US, but the stries generated by listeners in Germany in respnse t these same excerpts were significantly different. This suggests that even when asked t generate entirely fictinal stries, listeners are influenced by their prir assciatins with music. This speaks t general theries that ur memries play a substantial rle in shaping imaginatin.
Understanding hw different music evkes different thughts is imprtant fr varius practical uses. Fr instance, a dctr might aim t trigger(觸發(fā))specific types f thughts via music when wrking with a client, r an artist might engage a mre creative thinking mde by listening t a particular piece f music.
32. What can we learn abut “music-evked thughts" frm Paragraph 2?
A. They vary with different types f music.B. They are few ccurrences in music listening.
C. They invlve peple in dancing t the music.D. They strike peple during engaging music play.
33. What is unique abut classical music?
A. It was assciated with clubbing.B. It prvided listeners with real cntexts.
C. It was intended t stimulate imaginatin.D. It was played mre slwly than ther music types.
34. What greatly influenced listeners' imaginatin?
A. The develpment level f their cuntry.B. The previus music-related experiences.
C. The educatin they received while yung.D. The types f stry they were asked t create.
35. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A. Where Des Our Memry Cme frm?B. D Music Imaginings Vary with Cultures?
C. Des Listening t Music Help Stry Creatin?D. Hw Des Different Music Shape Our Imagined Thughts?

Yu're trying t cncentrate, but yur mind is wandering r yu're easily distracted(分心).Like a cmputer that slws with use, the brain accumulates(積累)wear and tear that affects prcessing. 36 T imprve attentin, cnsider the fllwing strategies.

Take cgnitive training. Cmputerized cgnitive training games are aimed at imprving yur respnse and attentin. 38 “The gal f playing these games is nt t get better at them, but t get better in daily activities,” Willment says. “But there is evidence that a persn's ability t pay attentin can be imprved by prgressively pushing the persn t higher levels f perfrmance and this may translate t everyday life.”
Keep a healthy lifestyle. Many aspects f a healthy lifestyle can help attentin, starting with sleep and exercise. When we sleep, we reduce stress hrmnes that can be harmful t the brain and we clear ut prteins that injure it. 39 When yu exercise, yu increase the availability f brain chemicals that prmte new brain cnnectins, reduce stress, and imprve sleep.
