When we were grwing up, ur family had a valuable traditin that filled ur lives with jy and anticipatin. Every Saturday evening, we wuld set ff t visit ur extended family, and the excitement was bvius. The pleasant smell f freshly baked gds wuld waft thrugh the air, signaling ur apprach t Aunt Lucille’s warm and welcme hme . As the famus biscuits attracted us, my sister and I, unable t cntain ur excitement, wuld repeatedly ask, “Are we there yet?”
At hme, we were accustmed t sandwiches, but Aunt Lucille’s biscuits were a different kind f glee. After eating every last biscuit, we came t the backyard where the night sky unflded abve us. There, we gathered arund, drinking sweet tea, as the meldic sund f guitars by Henri and Beau created a symphny that resnated with the lve and unity f ur family. These evenings were mre than just a break frm the rutine; they were a celebratin f ur bnd.

Animals have develped many impressive skills t sleep under tugh cnditins. Sme seals sleep while they hunt n the sea flr. Frigate birds sleep in the air during lng flights. Nw, a new study finds that reindeer (馴鹿) can sleep while eating.
Reindeer live in the far Nrth. There, the sun can shine arund the clck in summer and fd is plentiful. Reindeer get busy eating it and chewing (咀嚼) the cud (反芻的食物). Finding time t sleep amng all the cud chewing might be tugh. But what if the reindeer culd sleep as they chew? T check this, neurscientist Melanie Furrer and chrnbilgist Sara Meier stuck electrdes n reindeer.
Electrdes detected brain waves typical f nn-REM (rapid eye mvement) sleep when the reindeer were chewing cud. The reindeer’s chewing mtin made it hard t tell whether the signal was like that f regular sleep. “We culdn’t g int detail by lking nly at the brain waves, because this chewing disturbs them,” says Furrer.
Other signs, hwever, helped cnfirm the reindeer really were asleep. “Fr ne thing, the reindeer were calm while chewing. In fact, they ften had their eyes clsed. They were in a very relaxed state that resembles the bdy psitin f nn-REM sleep,” Furrer ntes.
Chewing reindeer were als harder t disturb. They were less likely t lk ver at nise made by a nearby reindeer. Plus, when the reindeer were kept awake, they needed catch-up recvery sleep. But time spent chewing decreased hw much time they spent in recvery sleep.
Tgether, these evidences shw that reindeer can sleep while chewing, says neurbilgist Niels Rattenbrg. Sme animals, such as dlphins, sleep with nly ne side f their brain at a time. But reindeer seem t sleep with bth sides f their brains while chewing. “Studying varius frms f sleep might lead t insights n sleep walking in peple,” Rattenbrg says. “This is a prly understd and ptentially dangerus sleep disrder.”

Artificial intelligence (AI) technlgy may sn be a useful tl fr dctrs. It may help them better understand and treat diseases like breast cancer in ways that were never befre pssible.

Rawat prvides infrmatin abut cancer cells t a cmputer. He says, “This data helps the machine learn. Yu can put the data int machines and they will learn the patterns and the pattern recgnitin that is imprtant t making decisins.”
David Agus is anther USC researcher. He believes that machines are nt ging t take the place f dctrs. He says, “Cmputers will nt treat patients, but they will help make certain decisins and lk fr things that the human brain can’t recgnize by itself.”
Once a cnfirmed cancerus grwth is remved, dctrs still have t treat the patient t reduce the risk f cancer returning. The frm f treatment depends n the kind f cancer. Currently, researchers take a thin piece f tissue, put it n a small piece f glass and add clr t better see the cells. That prcess culd take days r even lnger. Scientists say AI can d smething better than just cunt cells. Thrugh machine learning, it can recgnize cmplex patterns, r structures, and learn hw the cells are rganized. The hpe is that machines will sn be able t make a quick identificatin f cancer that is free f human mistakes.
Agus adds, “All f a sudden, we have the cmputing pwer t really d it in real time. We didn’t have the cmputing pwer t d this several years ag, but nw it’s all changed.”
The USC’s researchers are nw nly studying breast cancer. But dctrs predict AI will ne day make a difference in all frms f cancer.
