I liked running, but cycling and swimming weren’t my strengths I had always categrized the triathln as ne f thse things I’ll never d. Hwever, encuraged by my marathn success, I fund a 70.3 triathln and registered.
I tld my cach that my gal was t finish the race within 7 hurs. She thught I might make it if I fllwed a training plan. Training, hwever, was tugh. Every day, I had a big wrkut that left me exhausted. Many times I cnsidered quitting. But I wanted t push myself and try smething challenging. S I persevered with the training plan.
Finally, the race day arrived. I std n the beach in the early mrning. Three triathln races were being held that day, and I had signed up fr the lngest — the 70.3 triathln: a 1.2- mile swim, a 56- mile bike ride, and a 13.1- mile run.
Peple arund me wre fancy triathln suits and waterprf watches. “Are yu ding the 70.3 triathln?” I asked. T my surprise, they were all cmpeting in the shrter races. I started panicking Everyne lked yunger and fitter than I was.
I walked thrugh the crwds until I fund anther 70.3 cmpetitr —a strng man wh was yung enugh t be my sn. My anxiety increased, and I was cnsumed with dubt as t whether I culd even cmplete the race.
I heard thunder as rain started hitting the beach, hping the race wuld get canceled. But an annuncer declared the weather was imprving and the race wuld sn begin. With n chice but t prceed, I made my way t the starting line. As I swam, I repeated t myself, “Dn’t drwn.” I was behind a wman wh seemed t be ging the same speed, s I fllwed her lead. Eventually, I was ut f the water.
The rain stpped, and the swim was ver. My day was lking up. Cheerfully, I started the bike ride.
