Summer sea ice in the Arctic culd melt almst cmpletely by the 2030s — rughly a decade earlier than prjected — even if humans cut back drastically n greenhuse gas emissins, new research suggests.
An ice-free summer, als called a “blue cean event”, will happen when the sea ice drps belw ne millin square kilmeters, writes Jnathan Bamber, a prfessr f physical gegraphy at the University f Bristl, in the Cnversatin.
Previus assessments using mdels have estimated an ice-free summer under high and intermediate emissins scenaris by 2050. But researchers nticed differences between what climate mdels predicted abut what wuld happen t sea ice and what they’ve actually seen thrugh bservatins. “The mdels, n average, underestimate sea ice decline cmpared with bservatins,” says Nathan Gillett, an Envirnment and Climate Change Canada scientist.
Nw, in a new study published in Nature Cmmunicatins, Gillett and his teammates changed these mdels t mre clsely fit satellite data cllected ver the past 40 years. Using these adapted mdels, the researchers prjected ice changes under different pssible levels f greenhuse gas emissins. Their paper suggests that regardless f the emissins scenari, “we may experience an unprecedented ice-free Arctic climate in the next decade r tw.”
While sea ice naturally decreases in the summer and refreezes during the winter, summer ice cverage has steadily been declining ver the past few decades because f climate change. And Arctic ice melting happens faster itself — as ice disappears, it expses mre f the dark blue cean, which absrbs mre heat and leads t mre melting. This prcess has led t the regin warming nearly fur times faster than the rest f the glbe since 1979.
Sea ice decline culd have disastrus cnsequences that extend t the rest f the planet, including sea level rise and disturbance t weather patterns and ecsystems. Animals like plar bears and seals that rely n Arctic ice t survive culd be placed at risk.
28. Accrding t the new research, what will happen cncerning summer sea ice in the Arctic?
A. Its melting can be prevented in greenhuse gas emissins.
B. Its cmplete melting may ccur earlier than expected.
C. Its vanishing nce and fr all will be in less than 10 years.
D. Its drpping will give rise t s-called “blue cean event”.
29. What effrt did the researchers make after figuring ut the prblem f the previus assessments?
A. They adapted the mdels t be cnsistent with the actual cases.
B. They cllected satellite data ver the past 40 years.
C. They abandned the attempt t use mdels.
D. They predicted accurately ice changes in regins f the Arctic.
30. Hw is paragraph 5 develped?
A. By listing statistics.B. By giving definitins.
C. By making a cmparisn.D. By analyzing cause and effect.
31. What message may the text be trying t cnvey t readers?
A. Pride cmes befre a fall.B. Man prpses, gd dispses.
C. If the lips are gne, the teeth will be cld.D. A gd beginning is half dne.

Hw d yu get thse extra secnds f energy? A research team at the Texes Tech University develped a study t measure what effect listening t music wuld have n exercise tlerance. The researchers based the study n a stress testing. As part f the testing, they nted any changes in heart rate and bld pressure as participants underwent physically stressful exercise.
The tests were dne n treadmills (跑步機), which increased in bth speed and incline (坡度) thrugh three stages. In the final stage, the treadmills mved at 10 miles per hur at a 14-percent grade. Mst f these tests were designed t last up t 40 minutes. The average gym-gers lasted 30 minutes. Fr this study, they divided 127 participants int tw grups. One listened t upbeat (快節(jié)奏) music, while the ther grup had earbuds in but did nt listen t music.
The grup that listened t music was able t utlast the nn-music grup by an average f 50.6 secnds. Again, being able t g an extra minute may seem like a n-brainer, but “after 30 minutes, yu feel like yu are running up a muntain, s even being able t g 50 secnds lnger means a lt,” said the study’s lead authr, Waseem Shami, MD.
The study has cnfirmed smething runners and gym-gers have suspected fr years: Listening t music during wrkut can be beneficial t yur endurance. “Our findings reinfrce the idea that upbeat music can help yu exercise lnger and stick with a daily exercise rutine,” said Shami. “When dctrs are recmmending exercise, they might suggest listening t music, t.”
32. Why did Shami’s team cnduct the research?
A. T test the effect f music n health.
B. T knw the cause f failure in sprts.
C. T imprve runners’ exercise tlerance.
D. T recrd the bdy change f participants.
33. What did the researchers learn abut the Participants in the stress testing?
A. They culd run a little lnger with music n.
B. They created a new recrd f indr sprts.
C. They ran much faster than average runners.
D. They all enjyed extreme physical challenge.
34. What d the underlined wrds “a n-brainer” mean in paragraph 4?
A. A dull activity.B. A flish actin.
C. A demanding task.D. An easy practice.
35. What did Shami suggest us ding in the last paragraph?
A. Develping a daily exercise rutine.B. Listening t music while wrking ut.
C. Participating in physical stress testing.D. Taking exercise as dctrs recmmend.
