A decade ag, I attended a banquet in Guangzhu where the fd was exceptinal. The bird’s nest sup, made frm chicken and pssibly ham with dried scallps (干貝), was gentle and slippery. The sea cucumber was rich and sticky, and the fish was sparklingly fresh and steamed t perfectin. Hwever, what std ut was the plain white sup f brth (肉汁), served at the end. It was simple, plain, and perfect.
Ending a banquet with sup may seem dd t Westerners, wh are used t sweets at the end f meals. But as an English fd writer named Fuchsia Dunlp explains in her bk Invitatin t a Banquet, sup is a unique expressin f a chef’s art, much like a singer’s vice. The transparent, almst invisible sup is an ideal cnclusin t a banquet, with its luxury and strng flavrs.
Invitatin t a Banquet is Dunlp’s seventh bk. Unlike her ther bks n Chinese cuisine such as The Fd f Sichuan and Revlutinary Kitchen, this ne is nt a ckbk. Instead, she has chsen 30 dishes frm different regins f China t illustrate different aspects f Chinese cuisine and histry.
What makes Dunlp’s writing unique is her perspective. She argues that Chinese cuisine is superir (更勝一籌的) nt nly in taste but als in its ability t incrprate freign influences while still maintaining its wn identity. Furthermre, Dunlp makes an equally cmpelling case that what Westerners think f as “Chinese fd” is neither false nr wrng. It is merely a diaspric (離散的) branch that reflects lcal tastes and is representative f the cuisine’s diversity. Immigratin and adventurusness have made authentic Chinese fd mre accessible utside China than ever befre.
In cnclusin, Invitatin t a Banquet by Fuchsia Dunlp prvides a fascinating glimpse int the wrld f Chinese cuisine. Thrugh her well-researched bk and insightful discussins, she encurages readers t appreciate the cmplexity and richness f Chinese fd.

上文“Friends are the family yu chse. They may even be in a similar life stage as yu are.( 朋友是你選擇的家人。 說(shuō)明朋友的重要,下文“Here are sme ways yu can thank friends fr their uncnditinal supprt.( 下面是一些你可以感謝朋友無(wú)條件支持的方法。)”
根據(jù)下文“Make a playlist featuring sngs abut gratitude fr yur fiends. Let yur friends knw thse sngs represent the way yu feel abut their presence in yur life. Music is a great way t develp a gd sense f emtinal cnnectin.( 制作一個(gè)播放列表,收錄那些表達(dá)對(duì)朋友感激之情的歌曲。 故選A。

As much as yu may need t express, yu need t listen and empathize, t.( 你的朋友可能正面臨著和你一樣的不確定和焦慮。
前文“It can be easy t frget t thank yur friends fr the ways that they supprt us.( 我們很容易忘記感謝朋友對(duì)我們的支持。)”

It tk abut a whle minute fr her t stammer her name and class. By that time, murmurs were heard in the audience. "Why is she taking s lng?" peple arund me asked. I shifted nervusly in my seat, wishing I were smewhere else. Finally, my sister started t sing. I braced myself fr the wrst. She pened her muth, and I was transfixed-she sang effrtlessly and meldiusly. Her vice rang unselfcnsciusly thrugh the hall, beautiful in its pwer. I exhaled and watched in wnder.
Hw did I nt knw that my sister culd sing s sweetly? Hw culd I have dubted my sister’s abilities? I listened ever s carefully t the lyrics she had cmpsed all by herself and my heart gave way. I had been s wrng. Guilt and shame filled my heart as I listened t my sibling. Althugh she knew that I was embarrassed by her and was reluctant t attend her cncert, she had frgiven me; she had never taken anything that I had dne t her t heart. It was then that I reslved t lve her uncnditinally. It was as if a veil had been lifted frm my eyes, and my heart was full.
