The mnarch butterfly (帝王蝶) ppulatin has drpped t its secnd-lwest number n recrd in Mexican frests this winter. The frests are the insects’ (昆蟲) winter hme. Their ppulatin is nw wrrisme as the butterfly grup is already cnsidered at risk f disappearance.
Mexic’s gvernment and the Wrld Wildlife Fund (WWF) recently made public the findings f their yearly jint study n the butterflies. The research shws that the mnarch butterfly presence has drpped t less than a hectare f frest area. In the mid-1990s, mnarch butterflies culd be fund n arund 18 hectares f the frest.
The findings shw an almst 60 percent drp in the mnarch butterfly ppulatin cmpared t last year’s study. It is als the secnd-lwest ppulatin finding since the first study tk place mre than thirty years ag.
Bilgists believe the serius situatin is caused by the higher-than-usual temperatures and dry cnditins in the nrthwestern US where the butterfly reprduces. The weather cnditins have an influence n the grwth f milkweed, the plant where the butterflies lay their eggs. When the yung arrive, milkweed is their fd fr a time.
In ne f the planet’s famus wildlife migratins (遷徙), the butterflies travel suth as far as 4,500 kilmeters frm places as far nrth as Canada. They spend the winter in warmer Mexic, where millins f the insects stay in trees that prtect them frm the rain and cld.
Mnarch butterfly ppulatins change year t year. As recently as 2021 the same study shwed a 35% increase t cver arund 2.8 hectares. Scientists called fr mre actin t help the insects. Such calls included the need t use less herbicides that may present a danger t milkweed and the need t prtect frests. “We can’t lwer ur guard,” said Jrge Rickards, head f WWF’s Mexic ffice.
