I was bullied because they knew I was pr, different, and read t much,” she wrte in her cllege essays.
Hwever, academics prved t be a way fr her t find cnfidence in herself again. Khadijah was in third grade when she first realized the pwer f test scres, placing in the 99th percentile n a state exam — that is, nly 1% f students acrss the cuntry tested better than she did. Her teachers marked the 9-year-ld as gifted, a special categry that Khadijah, even at that early age, prmised t keep. “I still remember that exact number,” Khadijah said.
And in 11th grade, when she enrlled at Jeffersn High Schl, she decided t stay put, regardless f where her mther mved. Graduatin was nt far ff and she needed strng cllege letters f recmmendatin frm teachers wh were familiar with her wrk. This decisin meant taking a bus each mrning at 4 a.m. and nt getting hme until 11 p.m. She kept her grade-pint average at just belw a 4.0 while participating in the Academic Decathln (十項全能), the debate team and leading the schl’s track and field team.

Have yu ever walked int a rm and frgtten why yu went in there, r been abut t speak but suddenly realized yu had n idea what yu were ging t say? The human brain nrmally balances cuntless thughts and actins, but smetimes, it seems t shrt-circuit. T figure ut why, we have t lk int what really happens when we frget what we were just thinking abut.
It’s imprtant t knw tw different types f memry: lng-term and wrking memry. Lng-term memries are a brad categry f memries that invlve knwledge and experiences stred in the brain fr extended perids. On the ther hand, thughts in wrking memry, whse certain characteristics are likely t explain why we frget, flash thrugh the mind fr nly secnds at a time.
First, wrking memry has very limited capacity. Peple can hld nly abut fur t seven “chunks” f infrmatin - such as letters r phrases - in their wrking memry at a time. Rather than being aware f all f these “chunks” simultaneusly (同時地), the brain bunces arund frm ne idea t anther, making it mre likely that ne gets neglected. Secnd, the brain quickly erases unimprtant things frm wrking memry t make rm fr new infrmatin. S unless thse shrt-term memries are transferred int lng-term memries, they’re sn gne frm cnscius thught.
Because the brain isn’t actually capable f multitasking, it has t “juggle” different thughts as ur wrking memry rushes arund t different ideas, which requires cnscius effrt and attentin. If attentin becmes fcused n nly ne f thse thughts r is diverted smewhere new, the brain lses track f the earlier thughts. And alchl and aging may wrsen the case.
T stp frgetting things, it’s advised against multitasking. When yu think yu’re multitasking, yu’re juggling, which makes frgetting mre likely. Mrever, recreating the cntext can help, which means ging back int the rm yu were befre. Thse cntext clues might give the brain the extra bst it needs t reach back a few secnds in wrking memry and regain the thught.
8. Hw did the authr intrduce the tpic?
A. By making cntrasts.B. By listing numbers.
C. By asking questins.D. By giving backgrund infrmatin.
9. What d we knw abut memry?
A. Memry can’t be restred if it disappears.
B. Practic?ng multitasking des gd t wrking memry.
C. Wrking memry cannt be transferred int lng-term memry.
D. Peple’s wrking memry capability varies with different life stages.
10. What des the underlined wrd “juggle” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A. Balance.B. Present.C. Master.D. Attain.
11. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Tw types f memryB. Imprving ur memry
C. What did I cme in fr?D. Hw des ur memry wrk?
D
Attentin-deficit/ hyperactivity disrder, r ADHD, is characterized as a persn having difficulties with inattentiveness, lack f impulse (沖動) cntrl, r bth. There are pssible explanatins fr the grwing number, including greater awareness and previusly missed diagnses. But ne understudied envirnmental factr may be technlgy-related ADHD.
Recent research shws that genetics play a significant rle. “There are als envirnmental factrs that can result in ADHD,” ntes Jill Rach Beisel, a physician at a medical center. Amng the mst understudied envirnmental factrs is the veruse f technlgy. A study shws that frequent digital media use invlving scial media, gaming, texting, and streaming mvies, music, r TV increases ne’s risk f develping ADHD symptms by nearly 10 percent. A large ppulatin study shws that t prevent attentinal prblems related t technlgy use, ne shuld limit smartphne use t 60 minutes a day.
The link between technlgy use and attentin prblems culd als be attributed t the fact that peple wh cnstantly use technlgy have fewer pprtunities t allw their brain t rest in its natural state.
Elias Abujaude, a behaviral scientist, explains that “fr a lng time, the assciatin between ADHD and heavy nline use was a chicken-and-egg questin in ur field: D peple becme heavy nline cnsumers because they have ADHD and nline life better suits their attentin span, r d they develp ADHD as a result f digital verlad?” Clinical experience and research, he says, “increasingly suggest that the latter may be mre relevant.”
Thugh sme schlars aren’t as sure, if technlgy use really des cause ADHD in adults, Abujaude says the new studies wuld still be wrthwhile. “Because the current understanding f the disrder is a neurdevelpmental syndrme (神經(jīng)發(fā)育癥狀),” he explains, “this srt f ‘a(chǎn)cquired’ ADHD… (wuld have) a different surce and may require different interventins and supprt.”

C. T help readers understand the large scale f adults with ADHD.
D T suggest that the U. S. has the highest rate f adults with ADHD.

A. Genetics.B. Technlgy.
C. Greater awareness.D. Previusly missed diagnses.
14. What is Elias Abujaude’s argument abut the relatinship between ADHD and nline usage?
A. Peple develp ADHD due t heavy Internet cnsumptin.
B. Peple becme heavy nline cnsumers because f ADHD.
C. It was a classic chicken-r-the-egg dilemma in their study field.
D. Heavy nline cnsumers have fewer pprtunities t allw their brain t rest.
