On a schl day in Octber, Glenmunt Elementary librarian Erin Hauser is grabbing as many bks as she can carry frm the Ravens Bkmbile— at least50 r 60.
It’s ne f many pprtunities they have t engage with The Maryland Bk Bank, a nnprfit that prvides free bks t students acrss the state wh wuldn’t therwise have access t them. “T rder a new hardback picture bk is $17.99, and if yu have ne, tw r three children, that can be a heaven burden,” Hauser says.
The Bk Bank has been serving the cmmunity since the late 1990s. Middle-incme families have an average f 60 bks at hme, while sme lwer incme families can nly affrd ne r tw, Feiring says. The Bk Bank has wrked t clse that gap, partnering with sme schls t give each child 20 bks per year. That gal is vitally imprtant. If students are nt prficient readers by the end f third grade, they’ re fur times mre likely t drp ut f high schl, accrding t a 2012 reprt by the Annie E. Casey Fundatin.
The Bk Bank is vlunteer run, and abut 75% f funding cmes frm an nline bk-selling scial enterprise that emplys wrkers thrugh Baltimre City’s Administratin’s Office f Emplyment Develpment. The rest is prvided by fundatins and the cmmunity.
Feiring says he knew the Bk Bank was having an impact when he learned hw far sme families were traveling fr bks and why. “In ne case, a wman tld us that she reads fd ingredients t her child,” he says. “Others have tld us that they read the mail— junk mail.”
Part f the Bk Bank’s missin is t add t students’ hme libraries. This missin includes ensuring students were sent bks while they were at hme learning virtually. Hauser says that acrss her seven years at Glenmunt, she’s gtten 4,000 bks frm the Bk Bank— many f which have been sent hme with students t keep, which is very meaningful t them. “T me, it really shwed that it’s nt just a bk,” Hauser says. “It’s that space that it creates in a child’s mind.”
24.What was Erin Hauser ding in the Ravens Bkmbile?

Best friends frever. We 90’s kids drew these wrds n ur hands with markers and ink; mst peple I knew had at least ne persn they cnsidered their BFF. Perhaps we imagined each ther at weddings, meeting each ther’s kids, and ging n vacatins t Antarctica smeday.
These simple understandings f friendship are naturally challenged as we grw. It des appear that the number f lng-term friendships is decreasing. As ppsed t the ideal f lifelng friendships, mre and mre friendships seem limited in time. Smetimes, it is as simple as lst cntact. With mre peple wrking remtely and fewer “third spaces” existing in the cmmunity, we see each ther less, which can lead t lsing tuch. That was the primary reasn individuals tend t drift apart frm their friendships in the past.
Anther reasn may be less tlerance fr cnflict. In decades past, it seemed that waxes and wanes in friendship were expected. Mst f these were nt the end f the friendship. Tday, there seems t be much less tlerance. We are quicker t blck each ther ut r label ne anther “txic”, even when the friendship might be valuable t us.
Scial media trends have certainly sent a message that cutting smene ff when they aren’t making yu feel gd is a psitive thing t d. Yet is this always the case?
There is a natural cycle in relatinships invlving cnnectin, breaks, and repair. Relatinship expert Jhn Gttman has identified this recnnectin as perhaps the mst imprtant part f the cycle because cnflict is inevitable and can ultimately bring us clser. In friendships, we get clse(cnnect), have times f cnflict(break), and then wrk thrugh that cnflict thrugh a recnnectin(repair). Otherwise, the friendship ends— and mre and mre, it seems, friendships are ending befre repair is given any pssibility.
Cntinuing a friendship thrugh cnflict can als help us learn things abut urselves that can be difficult t face, and enhance ur lives. When we repeatedly discnnect frm peple wh tell us things we dn’t want t hear, we risk getting self-enclsed.
If yu are lking t build capacities in repair, turn t essential skills that require practice.
28.What used t be the chief reasn fr peple t distance themselves frm friendships?
A.Gegraphical mves.B.Persnality changes.
C.Less tlerance fr cnflict.D.Increasing financial gap.
29.What des the underlined wrds “waxes and wanes” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Rise and fall.B.Black and white.
C.Day and night.D.Give and take.
30.What might scial media trends encurage?
A.Building lifelng friendships.B.Accepting cnflict in friendships.
C.Recnnecting with ld friends.D.Cutting ff unsupprtive relatins.
31.What might be discussed after the last paragraph?
A.Causes f friendship cnflicts.B.Imprtance f lifelng friendships.
C.Strategies fr enhancing repair skills.D.Benefits f scial media in friendships.

American literary giant Henry David Threau spent tw years at Walden Pnd, writing what wuld later be published as his bk Walden.
Nw, nearly 180 years later, his writings are teaching us that the Walden Pnd f 2024 isn’t the Walden Pnd f then. It’s nt uncmmn t see peple enjying Walden Pnd nwadays. Swimming, kayaking, and even field trips are cmmn activities there. But a walk arund Walden Pnd is a walk thrugh histry. Bstn University Prfessr Richard Primack is using that histry t his advantage. Primack is a prfessr f plant eclgy and part f a team f researchers studying climate change in Massachusetts. One f their mst valuable pieces f data is Threau’s bk.
“Threau made these very detailed bservatins, libraries f his bservatins n flwering time, leafing ut, bird arrival time, ice ut times in Walden Pnd. And s these scattered(零散的)tables are really what the basis is fr building n ur wn set f bservatins,” said Primack.
The data paints a clear picture that winters are shrter, and springs are cming earlier. “Climate change is affecting Cncrd, Massachusetts,” said Primack. “Wildflwers are flwering abut 10 days earlier. Trees are leafing ut 14 days earlier. Trees are smewhat mre respnsive wildflwers.”
But perhaps the mst cncerning isn’t what we see, but rather what we dn’t. “When we started t lk at the flwering times f plants, we kept encuntering wildflwer species that we culdn’t find r that were extremely rare,” said Primack. Wildflwers like fringed rchids r ladyslipper rchids were written abut by Threau, but Primack’s team culdn’t find any sign f them.
The species that had gne lcally extinct were the cld-lving, nrthern wildflwers, while the species that tended t be persistent were the warm-lving, suthern species.
When asked by WB if Threau shuld be revered in scientific circles the same way he’s revered in literature, Primack was abslute. “He shuld be. In Threau’s time and the decades after, peple criticized him that he’s nt a gd scientist. We nw knw that was cmpletely wrng. Threau was, in fact, a very accurate scientist,” he added.
32.Why d climate scientists turn t Threau’s bk?
A.It details natural event timings.B.It recrds Walden Pnd’s histry.
C.It reveals Cncrd’s ecsystem insights.D.It dcuments the ppularity f Walden Pnd.
33.What research finding cncerns Primack’s team mst?
A.The delay in leafing ut f treesB.The earlier arrival f spring in Cncrd.
C.The extinctin f sme wildflwer species.D.The increase f warm-lving, suthern plants.
34.What’s the Primack’s attitude twards Threau’s rle as a scientist?
A.Skeptical.B.Psitive.C.Unclear.D.Oppsed.
35.Which f the fllwing can serve as the best title fr the text?
