Patrick and sme friends decided t stay n the island during the strm, and ended up sheltering at a nearby schl. They survived—a dzen peple in the Keys didn’t—but the grve wasn’t as lucky.
Patrick’s stry is a heartbreaking ne. Bittle strikes a pessimistic nte abut the future f the Keys’ ability t sustain human life. “Many f the islands in the archipelag (群島),perhaps all f them, culd g underwater altgether by the end f this century,” he writes. Sme Keys residents decided t stay after Irma; thers, unable t bear the thught f ging thrugh that kind f trauma again, left.
