When I was little, my dad would let me sit beside him while he painted. He would tell me how the cow by itself is just a cow, and the grassland by itself is just grass and flowers, and the sunlight going through the trees is just a beam of light, but put them all together and you’ve got magic.
I understood what he was saying, but I’ve never felt what he was saying until one day when I was up in the sycamore tree(梧桐樹) to rescue a kite stuck in the branches.
It was a long way up, but I thought I’d give it a try. I started climbing. Then I looked down. And suddenly I got dizzy and weak. But the kite was still beyond my reach. I caught my breath and forced myself to concentrate on the kite as I climbed up.
When I had the kite free, I needed a minute to rest. That’s when the fear began to disappear, and in its place came the most amazing feeling that I was flying, sailing among the clouds.
Then I began to notice how wonderful the light wind smelled. I couldn’t stop breathing it in, filling my lungs with the sweetest smell I’d ever known.
I never got over the view. I kept thinking of what it felt like to be up so high in that tree. I wanted to see it, to feel it, again. And again!
It wasn’t long before I wasn’t afraid of being up so high and found the same spot. I could sit there for hours, just looking out at the world. Sunsets were amazing: Some days they’d be purple and pink; some days they’d be bright orange, setting fire to clouds across the horizon.
The view from my sycamore was more than clouds and wind and colors combined. Eventually, my father’s belief moved from my head to my heart. I started marveling(驚奇) at how that was possible. How could I be so full of peace and full of wonder?
It was magic.

For centuries, artists usually give people an impression: they are the “Starving Artists”, struggling to make ends meet. Henri Murger proved that. He was born the son of a doorman in France. Living in Paris, he was surrounded by creative geniuses (天才) and dreamed of joining them, but he grew upset with his failure to earn money.
In 1847, Murger published a book. It’s a collection of stories about poverty, which launched the concept of the “Starving Artists” into the public’s understanding as the model for a creative life. To this day, it continues to exist as the model for what we imagine when we think of the word “artist”.
Today, what we forget is that the story of the “Starving Artist” is, in fact, just an imaginary story. Due to the power of the concept in Murger’s book, many of us just want to become lawyers instead of writers, bankers instead of poets, and doctors instead of painters. Nobody wants to struggle financially for a lifetime.
In the early Renaissance (文藝復(fù)興), artists did not have reputations for being diligent workers. They were considered manual laborers, receiving small amounts of money for their work. Michelangelo Buonarroti, however, changed all that. He was not only a master sculptor but also the most affluent artist of his time. He established (確立) the idea that an artist could become financially successful.
Michelangelo did not need to starve for his creations, and neither do you. When we hear the tales and warnings about what it means to be an artist, we must understand an important truth — you don’t have to starve and you might as well make a living from your creative talents.
8. What is a popular impression of artists?
A. They are diligent workers. B. They tend to struggle financially.
C. They are creative geniuses. D. They aren’t ambitious enough.
9 What can we learn about Murger’s story collection?
A. It was based on facts.
B. It was thought highly of by artists.
C. It enabled Murger to make a fortune.
D. It influenced people’s understanding of artists.
10. What does the underlined word “affluent” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Wealthy. B. Controversial.
C. Starving. D. Humorous.
11. What are readers encouraged to do in the last paragraph?
A. Read more tales.
B. Tell the truth instead of lies.
C. Make the best of their talents.
D. Make as much money as possible.
B 9. D 10. A 11. C

Brain, 58, was treated in intensive care for a severe case. As soon as his condition had stabilized, he was sent home with equipment including a phone and a blood pressure monitor.
“Every day I would input my vital signs on the app,” Brain said. “If anything went wrong or wasn’t right, a nurse would call me straight away.”
Brain spent six weeks on this virtual(虛擬) ward, run by his local NHS hospital in partnership with Doccla, a healthcare technology company. He is one of thousands of patients to have been treated in new “hospitals at home”, seen by NHS leaders as a “l(fā)ifeline” for overcrowded hospitals that have run out of beds. 2,500 virtual ward beds were already in use, ensuring that people could get the care they need from their own homes.
Retz, founder of Docile, said soon there could be “regional command centers”, where a doctor monitored data from hundreds of patients. “It works in a similar way to traditional ward rounds in a hospital, with patients submitting data once or twice a day, which is reviewed by a doctor,” he said.
Noel O’Kelly, clinical director at Spirit Health, said, “Older people want to spend as little time in hospital as possible and avoid hospital visits, particularly as frequent visits and long periods of time spent in hospital can be damaging to the health of older patients. We have already seen very encouraging results from the use of virtual wards for older patients.”
Virtual wards allow real potential to support people to recover well in the community. The model is not a silver bullet and health leaders are mindful that it should not worsen health inequalities, but it could present a vital lifeline for the system.
12. Why was Brain sent home?
A. He had run out of money.
B. His case was terminal and hopeless.
C. He had completely recovered.
D. He was ready for his further improving.
13. What is NHS leaders’ attitude towards virtual wards?
A. Positive. B. Negative.
C. Indifferent. D. Doubtful.
14. How is “regional command centers” similar to “traditional ward rounds”?
A. Doctors work from home.
B. Patients have to stay in hospital.
C. Advanced information technology is a must.
D. Patients submit data to be examined by doctors.
15. Which of the following may Noel O’Kelly agree with?
A. Virtual wards only suit older patients.
B. Old people always find fault with hospitals.
C. Long hospitalization can harm aged patients.
D. Old patients in hospital shouldn’t be visited.

In the early period of the 17th century可知應(yīng)用一般過去時,主語為tea,是不可數(shù)名詞,謂語動詞用單數(shù),故填was exported。
分析句子結(jié)構(gòu)可知,形容詞great后接名詞variety(多樣性)進(jìn)行修飾,此處是介詞短語in great variety,意為“各種各樣”。
故填to tell。
分析句子成分可知,謂語動詞是 is produced和is grown,此處要用非謂語動詞,且date back to無被動語態(tài),因此要用現(xiàn)在分詞形式。
分析句子結(jié)構(gòu)可知,此處是固定短語enjoy popularity with/among...,意為“受...... 故填with/among。
故填A(yù)mazingly。
分析句子結(jié)構(gòu)可知,此處是一個省略句,完整句子應(yīng)該是:if (it is) drunk regularly, white tea will benefit people’s physical and mental health.
故填a。

故去掉on。
故將it改為which。
分析句子結(jié)構(gòu)可知,此處是固定短語spare no effort to do sth.,意為“不遺余力做某事”,不定式to后接動詞原形。
故將after改為before。
分析句子結(jié)構(gòu)可知,該句為固定句型not only..., but also...,意為“不僅…… 故在we前加did。
故將how改為what。

How are you getting on? With the summer vacation drawing near, I’m to participate in an English speech contest of middle school students to be held in Beijing. Faced with so many challenges in the course of the preparation, I have no alternative but to turn to you (in the hope that you will be so kind as to do me a favor).

Dear Mr. Li,
How have you been? I’m Li Hua, chairman of the Student Union of Chaoyang High School. Last week you gave a lecture on how to choose majors in college to us students and on behalf of my schoolmates I’m writing to express our sincere gratitude.
We’ve truly gained much from your amazing lecture. First and foremost, we now know that many factors should be taken into consideration before choosing a major, such as our personalities, interests, strengths and weaknesses. In this way, we can find something both suitable and enjoyable. Besides, what career paths we want to follow in the future also matters a great deal.
