She tk the umbrella, with teary eyes, explaining with chking vice that the umbrella was given by her parents, nw dead, Her happiness at retrieving(找回)this special pssessin was such that t have accepted her reward wuld have spiled smething, s I refused her ffer and left.
The fllwing mnths were hard. I can nly btain temprary emplyment, fr a small salary. What was wrse, I had just lst my last jb befre Christmas, with nly fifteen dllars left. Unless a miracle happened, I wuld be hmeless in January, fdless and jbless. I had prayed steadily fr weeks, and there had been n answer but this cldness and darkness.
The air was full f Christmas merriment, with the bells ringing and children shuting in the bitter dusk f the evening. But there shuld be n Christmas fr me, I knew, n gifts, n remembrance whatsever.
