Psychlgists tell us that there are fur basic stages that human beings pass thrugh when they enter and live in a new culture.
Culture begins with the “hneymn stage”. This is the perid f time when we first arrive in a cuntry where everything abut the new culture is strange and exciting. We may be suffering frm “jet lag” but we are thrilled t be in the new envirnment, seeing new sights, hearing new sunds and language, eating new kinds f fd.
Unfrtunately, after we have settled dwn int ur new life, we can becme very tired and begin t miss ur hmeland and ur family, friends, pets. All the little prblems in life seem t be much bigger and mre disturbing when yu face them in a freign culture.

Obviusly, it is a wrd-by-wrd literal translatin (直譯) f the Chinese greeting with wrng English grammar! Later n, my friend tld me that it is a standard American greeting. I was t surprised t believe her. Her wrds were unbelievable at all. S I did research n Ggle.cm. T my surprise, there are ver 60 thusand web pages cntaining “Lng time n see.” Thugh it is srt f infrmal, it is part f the language that Americans use daily. Interestingly, if yu type this phrase in Micrsft Wrd, the sftware will tell yu that the grammar needs t be crrected.
Nbdy knws the rigin f this Chinglish sentence. Sme peple believe that it came frm Charlie Chan’s mvies. In the 1930s, Hllywd mviemakers successfully created a wrldwide famus Chinese detective (警探) named “Charlie Chan” n wide screens. Detective Chan liked t teach Americans sme Chinese wisdm by quting Cnfucius. “Lng time n see.” was his symbl. Sn after Charlie Chan, “Lng time n see.” became a ppular expressin in America thanks t the ppularity f these mvies.
