An internatinal team f researchers, led by Dr Christine Batchelr f Newcastle University, UK, used clear pictures f the seaflr t shw just hw quickly a frmer ice cver retreated(退去)at the end f the last Ice Age, abut 20,000 years ag.
The team mapped mre than 7,600 small-scale landfrms acrss the seaflr. The ridges(山脊)are less than 2.5m high and are spaced between abut 25 and 300 metres apart. These landfrms are understd t have frmed when the ice cver’s retreating edge mved up and dwn with the tides(潮汐), pushing seaflr int a ridge every lw tide. Given that tw ridges wuld have been prduced each day, the researchers were able t wrk ut hw quickly the ice cver retreated. Their results, reprted in the jurnal Nature, shw the frmer ice cver rapidly retreats at a speed f 50 t 600 metres per day.
The seaflr landfrms als give light int the way in which such rapid retreat can happen. Dr Batchelr and c-wrkers nted that the frmer ice cver had retreated fastest acrss the flattest parts f its bed.
“An ice can g away frm the seaflr and retreat quickly when it becmes buyant(有浮力的),” explained c-authr Dr Frazer Christie. “This retreat nly happens acrss relatively flat beds, where less melting(融化)is required t thin the verlying ice t the pint where it starts t flat(漂?。?”
The researchers believe that the quick retreat culd sn be bserved in parts f Antarctica. This includes at West Antarctica’s vast Thwaites Glacier. The authrs f this new study suggest that it culd g thrugh quick retreat because it has recently retreated clse t a flat area f its bed.
“Our findings suggest that present-day rates f melting are enugh t cause quick shrt retreat acrss flat-bedded areas f the Antarctic Ice Sheet, including at Thwaites,” said Dr Batchelr. “Satellites(衛(wèi)星)may well knw this ice-cver retreat in the near future, especially if we cntinue ur climate warming.”

Everyne wants t hld peple’s attentin. S d media cmpanies. The reasn is simple: The further dwn a news stry readers read, the mre advertising incme(收入)frm the article creates. And the mre a piece f cntent hlds attentin, the mre custmers learn abut the prduct, service, r prblems discussed.

As a researcher, Berger explains, “While the research befre has examined hw headlines r advertisements attract attentin, we wish t find ut hw the cntent is able t hld a reader’s attentin. Fcusing n views and clicks des nt necessarily lead t cntent being fcused.”
Cmpanies such as YuTube and Facebk use measures like “standing time”, r hw lng users spend reading a piece f cntent, t better measure engagement. A catchy headline might lead readers t click n a link, fr example, but nce they pen the article, hw much f it d they actually read? D they stp after the first few sentences? D they cntinue fr mst f the article? Hlding attentin refers t whether cntent keeps the attracted attentin, making peple engaged.
“Our study shws that language that is easier t understand encurages cntinued reading, as des language that brings feelings,” says Me, anther researcher. But nt all emtinal language has the same effect. “That is, language that is wrrying, exciting, and hpeful encurages reading while language that makes yu feel dwn discurages it,” adds Schweidel, a third researcher.

D. T attract mre peple t wrk fr them.

A. Easy language.B. Anxius language.
C. Sad language.D. Psitive language.
35. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Hw Language Make Effects n Attentin
