I’m nw at a special university where 46 speech and hearing impaired students graduate each year. Every mrning, I made it a practice f setting the intentin in my heart f “May I be a tl fr them t get what they need right nw?”.
Tday, ne girl came and sat dwn. I started with hw we usually d. She can speak but cannt hear and lip-read. I asked ne questin, and she went n fr 10 minutes straight, and in Tamil (泰米爾語(yǔ)). I understd a cuple f wrds here and there, s I understd that she was nt saying anything cnnected with what I asked. I just kept n listening t her withut speaking a wrd. This went n fr an hur and a half! Then, after a lng pause, I tld her t get back n track with anther questin. And then she shared fr anther half an hur straight! The whle time I was just lking in her eyes which wuld g here and there but cme back t me. In the end, I just gt up and hugged her and she was smiling wider.
Then I invited her t have juice with me. She said yes. What put me in a state f fear was realizing, just a few minutes later, that treating my new friend t sme juice was the first celebratin f my very first salary! A mnth ag, I started my first jb, and what a blessing t have this imprtant mment in my life be rted in genersity.

A new analysis f phtgraphs frm the Internatinal Space Statin has identified a shift in the kind f lighting technlgies that Eurpean cuntries are using at night t brighten streets and buildings. Researchers have fund that the ld warm high-pressure street lights are rapidly being replaced by cler LED lights. The University f Exeter study, published in Science Advances, claimed that “this phenmenn is widely increasing the risk f harmful effects t ecsystems”.
LED lighting was prmted as being intended t reduce emissins, but its usage has raised energy cnsumptin. One explanatin f this is that the increase in pwer
efficiency and the assciated decrease in ecnmic cst have driven increased demand fr lighting, therefre, any efficiency gains have been cunteracted by increased cnsumptin f light.
The study als claimed that previus research int the effects f light pllutin have underestimated the impacts f blue light radiatin. Chief amng the health cnsequences f blue light is its ability t reduce the prductin f melatnin(褪黑素)that regulates sleep patterns in humans and ther rganisms. Scientific studies have warned that increased expsure t artificial blue light can wrsen peple’s sleeping habits.
The increase in blue light radiatin in Eurpe has als reduced the visibility f stars in the night sky, which may have impacts n peple’s sense f nature. Blue light can als alter the behaviral patterns f animals including bats and mths, as it can change their mvements twards r away frm light surces.
David Smith, f the cnservatin charity Buglife, said, “Light pllutin can dramatically impact animals. We shuld cnsider light frm a wider bilgical perspective than that f just humans and fcus n better quality lighting that is harmnius with ur natural wrld. Better quality and lwer levels f lighting wuld help save energy, and lwer financial csts, while als making ur envirnment safer fr living beings. Authrities can dim the lights during night hurs, and change the bandwidths(帶寬值)f their LED bulbs t prduce less harmful blue light.”
What is the phenmenn described in paragraph 1?
A. The rising demand fr public lighting.
B. The increasing use f LED lights.
C. Old street lights prducing lts f emissins.
D. Artificial lights at night wasting much energy.
29. What des the underlined wrd “cunteracted” in paragraph 2 prbably mean?
A. Judged. B. Maintained.
C. Balanced. D. Strengthened.
30. In which aspect are peple influenced by blue lights?
A. Sleep patterns. B. Eyesight.
C. Learning ability.D. Scial behavirs.
31. Why des the authr mentin David Smith?
A. T stress the imprtance f saving energy.
B. T persuade authrities t avid using LED lights.
C. T shw ways f imprving the quality f LED bulbs.
D. T prvide suggestins n reducing light pllutin.

D yu have a brain fr math? New research indicates that levels f tw key neurtransmitters (腦神經(jīng)傳遞素) — glutamate (谷氨酸) and gamma-aminbutyric acid (GABA)can predict mathematical abilities, suggesting brain chemistry may be playing a rle in thse wh find math easy.
The new study, published in the jurnal PLOS Bilgy, recruited 255 subjects extending a range f six-year lds in primary schl t university students. The research fcused n glutamate and GABA, knwn t play a rle in brain plasticity (可塑性) and learning. Based n prir research, the fcus was n tw brain regins linked with mathematical abilities — the left intraparietal sulcus (IPS 頂葉內(nèi)溝) and the left middle frntal gyrus (MFG 腦額中回).
The results were interestingly different. In the yungest subjects high GABA levels and lw glutamate levels in the left IPS were cnsistently assciated with high math skills. But in the lder university grup the exact ppsite was seen: lw GABA and high glutamate were linked with strng mathematical abilities. Levels f bth neurtransmitters in the MFG did nt assciate with math skills.
The grup was tested twice ver 18 mnths, allwing the researchers t see if these
neurtransmitter levels culd predict mathematical ability int the future. And it wrked, with neurtransmitter levels effectively predicting ne’s success n math tests cmpleted a year and a half later.
Anther recent study frm the same research team lked specifically at GABA levels in MFG f 14 t 18 year lds. That research indicated MFG GABA levels culd effectively predict whether a student was still studying maths r had ceased that subject years prir.
Chen Kadsh, ne f the researchers wrking n the study, says this may indicate math educatin can help stimulate the develpment f key brain regins. Further research will wrk n whether certain learning interventins can help thse children less interested in math s these brain regins still get the develpmental wrkut they need.
“Nt every adlescent enjys maths s we need t investigate pssible alternatives, such as training in lgic and reasning that engage the same brain area as maths,” says Chen Kadsh.
What is the new study aimed at?
A. Explring mental develpment f the subjects.
B. Finding the tie between brain chemistry and math.
C. Testing the link between brain regins.
D. Revealing the structure f brain.
33. What can be learned frm the findings?
A. The levels f GABA decide ne’s math skills.
B. Lw MFG glutamate means pr math ability.
C. Neurtransmitters in the MFG affect math skills.
D. Math educatin may help with brain develpment.
34. What can better math educatin accrding t Chen Kadsh?
A. Develping key relevant brain areas.
B. Tracing slw learners’ early learning.
C. Training math learners respectively.
D. Studying mre pssible ptins.
35. What can be the best title f the text?
A. Factrs Affecting Math Skills
B. Ways t Prmte Math Educatin
C. Math Ability Predicted by Neurtransmitters
D. Brain Activities Invlved in Math Study

List yur ptins. It may appear that there is nly ne curse f actin, but that is nt necessarily true. N matter hw limited yur situatin seems, try t make a list f ptins. Brainstrm, and write dwn every idea that cmes t yur mind, as crazy as it may seem. Yu can always crss it ff the list later, but crazy ideas can bring creative slutins. Once yu have yur list, ask thers fr suggestins. 37
Weigh the pssible results. Fr every ptin, list every pssible result, and label it as psitive r negative. 38 Yu can put a plus sign next t each psitive result and a minus sign next t each negative ne. Give tw pluses r minuses t the best and the wrst.
39 This is the hardest step, but there will hpefully be a decisin n yur list that is supprted by bth lgic and intuitin (直覺(jué)). If yu still can't decide, ask fr
advice frm peple yu trust. If need be, let them be the tie-breakers. It's better than flipping (擲) a cin.
Carry it ut whleheartedly nce yu have made a decisin. At this stage, dn't let yurself be cnfused by thinking abut all the chices yu didn't pick.
In the end, remember t evaluate yur decisin afterward. 40 By drawing wisdm frm every decisin yu make, yu can ensure that every chice has at least ne psitive result.
