Fan Jinshi: Daughter f Dunhuang
The Mga Grttes are a very special place in China, which stand in Dunhuang, Gansu prvince. The Mga Grttes are thusands f years ld and were listed as a wrld cultural heritage (遺產(chǎn)) by UNESCO in 1987.

Influenced by her father, Fan liked visiting museums when she was in middle schl. With the great lve f Chinese culture, she studied in the archaelgy department in Peking University and graduated in 1963. Then she started wrking at Dunhuang and has wrked there ever since. On May 4, 2023, “Daughter f Dunhuang” Fan Jinshi returned t Peking University and brught back 10 millin RMB dnatins t set up the Fan Jinshi Educatin Fund (基金) t supprt the research f Dunhuang Studies at Peking University.

Ya Ya the giant panda has just arrived in Shanghai, east China n Thursday after 20 years f stay at the Memphis Z in the U.S. The flight was arund 15.5 hurs. Bth Chinese and American vets are with Ya Ya.

N ne knws wh invented pencils r when it happened. A Swiss described a pencil in a bk in 1565. He said it was a piece f wd with lead inside it. (Lead is a very heavy, sft, dark gray metal.) Pencils weren’t ppular, and peple cntinued t write with pens. They used bird feathers as pens.
Then, in 1795, smene started making pencils frm graphite (石墨), and they became very ppular. One pencil can write 50,000 English wrds r make a line 55 kilmeters lng.
Peple wrte with feather pens and then used pens with metal pints. They had t dip (蘸) the pint int ink after every few letters. Next, smene invented a funtain pen that culd hld ink inside it. A funtain pen can write several pages befre yu have t fill it again.
Tw Hungarian brthers, Ladisla and Gerg Bir, invented the ballpint pen. English pilts liked the pens. They culdn’t write with funtain pens in airplanes because the ink leaked ut. Later, a French cmpany called Bic bught the Birs’ cmpany.
Sme peple call ballpint pens “Bics.” Australians call them “Birs.” Whatever we call them, we use them every day.
