Althugh I was the class clwn at schl, there’s an intrverted (內(nèi)向的) side t my persnality. That’s because I have a neurlgical (神經(jīng)系統(tǒng)的) cnditin that makes it hard fr my brain t prcess visual infrmatin. Wrds swim n the page fr me. I wanted t learn hw t read but I culdn’t.

Then I left schl and jined the military. I was determined t be a medic and trained hard. But things unraveled (揭開) when I did a curse in pre-hspital emergency care. I passed all my practical exams, preparing fr them by watching thers. The prblem was the written exam. I was s embarrassed but had t tell the examining dctr that I culdn’t read. He urged me t get back int educatin. I was 34.

He and clleagues pint ut methdlgical faults in sme f the studies that claim plants have brain-like cmmand centers and animal-like nerve cells. Althugh Laqueur began writing at a yung age, dancing always tk center stage.
