Stacy Dean, an fficial at the US Department f Agriculture, was inspired by a visit t Watkins Elementary, in Washingtn, D. C. Students grw vegetables in their schl garden. They als rll up their sleeves in the schl's kitchen t participate in a FRESHFARM FdPrints class, which integrates cking and nutritin educatin.
"Wh's next?" asks instructinal cach Regina Green, as kids thrw vegetables int the pan and the smell f fresh ginger and nins fills the air. "We grew these in ur garden," Jessie Gibsn, ne f the students, says prudly. Then he measures and purs dry ingredients int a bwl.
"Our family has tried new things because f the prgram," says Catie Kelley, whse tw children have participated in the FRESHFARM prgram. "They cme hme with the recipes," Kelley says. "It's fun because it's things that we dn't usually make at hme," s it has encuraged them t try nvel cmbinatins. She says the kids take mre f an interest at the grcery stre t identify fds they've tried in the prgram.
Dean wants t have the science arund health y eating integrated. A blck t scaling up these types f prgrams is mney. The prgram relies n grants and receives sme federal funding, but it's nt enugh t expand the prgram t all the schls that culd benefit.
In fact, there are ther prblems. At a time when diet-related disease is a leading cause f death, and unhealthy eating habits are rted in US culture, it's unrealistic t think that a cking curriculum culd vercme such a sweeping, scietal prblem. "We knw frm years f evidence that we need multiple things t cme tgether t supprt healthy eating," says Angela Odms-Yung, a prfessr f maternal and child nutritin at Crnell University.
Despite these challenges, prgrams like FRESHFARM can help kids expand their chices by intrducing them t new tastes. At first, many kids are turned ff by the bitter taste f greens. But thrugh the magic f cking, prcessing the nins, and blending in fresh ginger, kids can be inspired.

Heading t the beach is a ppular ptin fr lts f peple n a ht summer's day. It's there that yu'll find plenty f sand. But culd sand be mre imprtant than we've ever realized? A team f scientists have fund a very different use fr the tiny grains that we like t play with n the beach.

The researchers believe this culd prvide them with new infrmatin n hw the Earth's surface has changed ver the last few thusand millin years.
Sme minerals, like zircn, have std the test f time, and are thught t carry clues f Earth's histry. By studying the zircn fund in grains f sand frm rivers and rcks, the scientists are able t wrk ut previusly hidden details abut the Earth's past. "Strng and lasting minerals like zircn paint a vivid picture f the planet's histry, including changing envirnments, the evlutin f cntinents, and the accumulatin f mineral resurces at ancient p late bundaries," said Dr Mil Barham, wh wrked n the research.“The wrld's beaches faithfully recrd a detailed histry f ur planet's gelgical past, with billins f years f Earth's histry marked in the gelgy(地質(zhì)狀況) f each grain f sand and ur technique helps unlck the infrmatin.”
The scientists tried ut their new technique by taking a lk at sediment(沉淀物) in Suth America, East Antarctica, and Western Australia and they fund sme interesting differences. "The sediment n the west and east casts f Suth America is cmpletely different because there are many yung grains n the west side that were created beneath the cntinent. Hwever, n the east cast, all is relatively calm gelgically and there is a mix f ld and yung grains," said prfessr Chris Kirkland, wh als wrked n this research.
28. What d the underlined wrds "a very different use" in paragraph 1 refer t?
A. Sand can prvide a gelgical histry f the Earth's surface.
B. Sand can recnstruct the cnditins f mineral frmatin.

A. Its cst is extremely lw. B. Its zircn is hard and lng-lasting.
C. It exists all ver the wrld. D. It's experienced many changes.
30. What can be learnt abut Suth America frm the last paragraph?
A. The west cast is relatively calm gelgically.
B. The east cast is mre active than the west ne.
C. Its beaches have revealed the Earth's mysteries.
D. The grains n the west and east cast have different ages.
31. What can be the best title fr the text?
A. Histry f grains f sand
B. Interesting differences f sediment
C. A new technique will trace the human past
D. Sand can unlck what happened t Earth

Lip-reading invlves tracking facial mvements t determine what smene is saying. Many lip-reading devices pint a camera at the user's face. Others rely n sensrs stuck arund the speaker's muth. Neither apprach is suitable fr daily use, says Ruidng Zhang f Crnell University in Ithaca, NY. His team built a new lip-reading tech n a pair f eyeglasses, which uses acustics—sund—t recgnize silent speech. Zhang presented this wrk n April 19, 2023 at the ACM Cnference in Hamburg, Germany.
"Imagine the snar system whales use, " says Zhang. They send a sund int their envirnment and listen fr eches(回聲). Frm thse eches, they lcate bjects in their surrundings. "Our apprach is similar, but nt exactly the same," Zhang explains. "We're nt just interested in lcating smething. Instead, we're trying t track mving patterns."
Zhang calls the new tech EchSpeech, cnsisting f tw small speakers under ne lens f a pair f glasses, tw small micrphnes under the ther lens, and a circuit bard attached t ne f the side arms. When EchSpeech is switched n, its speakers play high-pitched sunds. Peple can't hear them. The sund waves mve in every directin. Sme travel arund the user's lips and muth. While speaking, the user's facial mvements change the paths f thse sund waves. That, in turn, changes the ech patterns picked up by the micrphnes. These patterns are sent t the wearer's smartphne ver Bluetth. Using AI, an EchSpeech app then interprets the ech patterns. It matches each pattern t cmmands the smartphne then fllws.
EchSpeech currently recgnizes 31 vice cmmands and recgnizes numbers that are three t six digits lng. Accrding t Zhang, future versins culd recgnize a much larger vcabulary. If s, users culd write persnal text messages via silent speech. In a nisy restaurant, they culd use that apprach t send messages t friends wh're hard f hearing.
Peple wh've had their vcal crds(聲帶) remved have been cntacting Zhang's team. They want t knw if this interface culd read their lips and then speak ut lud fr them. Zhang is nw explring whether EchSpeech culd d this in a persn's wn vice.
32. Why des Zhang mentin the snar system used by whales in paragraph 2?
A. T make their new tech mre cnvincing.
B. T highlight the advantages f their new tech.
C. T explain the inspiratin fr their new tech.
D. T make their new tech mre understandable.
33. What is the basis fr the peratin f EchSpeech?
A. Sund travels in a straight line.
B. One's facial mvements are unique.
C. Sund waves are reflected frm an bject.
D. Micrphnes are sensitive t lud sund.
34. What can we learn frm the furth paragraph?
A. Peple can hear sunds created by EchSpeech.
B. EchSpeech will be put int use befre lng.
C. EchSpeech can enhance interpersnal cmmunicatin.
D. Users can use EchSpeech t write persnal messages.
35. What is the main idea f the text?
A. New glasses read yur lips and tell yur phne.
B. Lip-reading devices can understand vice cmmands.
C. Lip-reading techniques are springing up wrldwide.
D. Recgnizing silent speech has already becme pssible.
