A new study says that mre than half the wrld’s cean area is “becming greener”, and the trend is cnnected t human-caused glbal warming.
It’s nt clear what is driving the greening. In sme places, it culd indicate changes in the amunt f planktn r ther rganic material flating in the water. Planktn are a crnerstne f the cean fd chain, and these kinds f shifts culd have ripple effects thrughut the entire marine ecsystem.
The study, published n Wednesday in the jurnal Nature, examines 20 years f satellite data measuring light reflected at the surface f the water all acrss the glbe, subtle changes that aren’t necessarily visible t the naked eye. The research finds that 56 percent f the wrld’s ceans are shifting in clr — and n the whle, they’re grwing greener. The trend is especially strng in the lwer latitudes, including the subtrpics and trpics.
The researchers then used a cmputer mdel t find ut whether climate change was playing a part. They cnducted ne set f simulatins representing the ceans under a strng climate change scenari, and then cmpared them with a secnd set f simulatins imagining a wrld in which climate change didn’t exist. The mdel suggests that rising glbal temperatures are t blame.
The exact reasns still require sme scientific digging. While climate change seems t be the culprit, the study als indicates that rising cean temperatures in and f themselves aren’t driving the greening.
There are plenty f ther ways glbal warming is affecting the wrld’s ceans, by changing the structure and flw f certain currents, fr instance. These kinds f changes can affect the grwth f phytplanktn and ther factrs that might be cntributing t the greening.
