When I started Scial-Engineer, I just left a cmpany that was amazing. It was like a family. The pain f leaving was real fr me and like all family separatin, it wasn't 100% smth. I was heartbrken t leave but wanted t take every lessn I learned t my new cmpany. I was determined t als take all the gd memries with me. Yes, there were mistakes frm bth sides f the fence but instead f fcusing n thse, I went away remembering all the great times, life lessns and grwth I had gifted t me.
I figured I wuld grw my cmpany by being a nice man and wrking hard, and never demanding mre frm my peple than I was willing t give, believing this apprach wuld ean respect and effrt in return. And t be hnest, it felt real. It felt like it was an hnest evaluatin.
But. . . But. . . But. . .
I started t have peple prblems. I am a very strng, direct cmmunicatr and althugh in many ways that is a strength, it can be a weakness in ther ways. I ften hurt peple's feelings. Even thugh I was very self-aware f this, I still messed up. Nw this is dd t admit ut lud fr a cmpany that basically fcuses n helping dzens f cmpanies make huge changes.
I went t see a psychlgist. Natasha actively listened t all I said and then every nw and then presented a thught as a questin r a mild statement. She wanted t challenge me t change, challenge me t expand my thughts. I was in my sessin with Natasha and I was saying things like this:
"I gave this persn tens f thusands f dllars in a raise in ne year, they shuld be mre appreciative. "
"I have a great salary, benefits and supprt package, this persn shuld have been mre thankful.”
Natasha stpped me and said, "Well, yu just SHOULD all ver yurself, didn't yu? Did yu pay fr devtin? Did yu pay fr hnr? Did yu pay fr appreciatin?"
The sad answer was NO.
"Yu want t see the change that yu s desire- then be the change, " Natasha said. She then mentined Bruce Lee, wh said "Empty yur mind, be frmless. Shapeless, like water. If yu put water int a cup, it becmes the cup. Yu put water int a bttle and it becmes the bttle. . . . Nw, water can flw r it can crash. Be water, my friend. "

Ten years ag, the prfessrs Brian Lucas and Lran Nrdgren encuntered a cntradictin. On the ne hand, we recgnize that ther peple are mre likely t make creative breakthrughs when they persevere. On the ther hand. when we feel stuck n a prblem, mst f us fail t sec hw successful we'll be if we just keep trying. We tend t believe that ur creativity drps ver time- that if ur best ideas dn't cme t us immediately, they wn't cme at all.
Lucas and Nrdgren cat this misunderstanding the "creative cliff illusin", which refers t the false belief that ur creativity sharply declines after an initial perid f effrt, leading us t underestimate ur ability t generate new and innvative ideas with cntinued perseverance. In ne experiment, they asked participants t spend 10 minutes generating "as many riginal ideas fr things t eat and drink at a Thanksgiving dinner as yu can. " Afterward, participants were asked t guess hw many ideas they wuld cme up with during a secnd 10-minute perid. Mst expected t generate far fewer ideas the secnd time arund, but in fact they prduced just as many during that secnd perid-66 percent mre than they had guessed. And thse were rated by ther peple as mre creative than the initial ideas.
Thugh we tend t think ur ability t cme up with ideas is easily cnsumed, we actually get mre creative the lnger we fcus n a prblem r task. One majr reasn fr this is knwn as the "serial-rder effect". Each next creative idea we have is likely t be better than the ne that came befre.
The serial-rder effect isn't always easy t see. Mst f us have adpted the belief that creativity shuld feel easy, r "fluent". And s we assciate mental difficulty with pintlessness. But wrking thrugh bad ideas is a necessary step in the creative prcess. The first slutins that cme t mind tend t be either preexisting ideas r ppular wisdm. These are the paths f least resistance. Thugh aviding them requires sme wrk, it's the surest way t find riginal ideas that aren't immediately manifest.
The serial-rder effect applies t tasks that last minutes r days, but creativity als imprves acrss years, decades, and even careers. The life's wrk f mst successful entrepreneurs prves it.
32. What des the cntradictin mainly tell us abut?
A. Tw prfessrs' wnder. B. The best ideas fr failures.
C. Peple's mental tendency. D. Immediate slutins t creativity.
33. Hw wuld the participants feel abut the secnd-rund results?
A. Humble. B. Surprised. C. Hpeful. D. Uncncerned.
34. What des the underlined wrd "manifest" mean?
A. Obvius. B. Effective. C. Attractive. D. Acceptable.
35. What des the text intend t tell us?
A. Peple can be mre creative with age.
B. Creativity cmes frm creative appraches.
C. Creativity actually increases with cntinued effrt.
D. Peple can avid misunderstandings abut creativity.
