Sheep, camels, gats and ther hfed (有蹄類) animals are better at figuring ut slutins t puzzles when they are less integrated int scial grups.
These individuals might be frced t find fd, shelter and ther needs n their wn withut grup help, thus fuelling innvatin, says Federica Amici at the University f Lipzig in Germany.
“If yu’re nt well integrated int yur scial grup, yu can’t cunt n friends prviding yu with supprt r sharing resurces with yu, and yu have t cunt n yurself much mre,” says Amici. “It’s interesting that prblem-slving skills appear t be quite an alternative scial skills.”
Amici and her clleagues wanted t cnsider hw scial grups affect individual animals’ capacity fr innvatin. They decided t cncentrate n hfed animals which live in widely varied scial grup structures and include bth wild and dmesticated species.
The team wrked with 1111 hfed animals frm 13 species, all living in zs in Spain, France and Germany. The researchers bserved each animal every 15 minutes fr several days t determine hw well it was integrated int the grup. Then, the team placed a set f cvered cups, filled with whatever fd each species particularly liked, in the enclsure (圍場) with the animals. Vide cameras recrded their behaviur withut humans present.
Regardless f species, it was the less scially integrated individuals that were mst successful at figuring ut hw t pen the lids t get t the fd inside the cups. It is pssible that because these animals get left ut f the grup, they are mtivated t find ther ways t get fd and ther resurces n their wn, says Amici. Anther pssibility is that these individuals aren’t necessarily rejected by their scial grup. Rather, they chse t be alne because they figure things ut n their wn.
Whether the findings apply t humans and ther species is unclear. “It’s tempting t see a parallel with humans,” says Amici. “Individuals with high prblem-slving skills may nt be the mst scially skilled peple.”

S, hw can we avid the curse f knwledge? One way is t empathize with thers. Try t see things frm their perspective and remember what it was like nt t knw that cncept. Use everyday language and simple examples t explain cmplex ideas. This will help the ther persn understand and prevent miscmmunicatin. Anther is t ask questins. Ask the ther persn what they understand and what they are cnfused abut. This can help yu tailr yur explanatin t their needs and avid assumptins that can lead t frustratin.

Brn frm the accessibility f mass air travel, mdern internatinal turism has been ppularized as “hliday-making” in regins that ffer cmparative advantages f sand, sun and sea. Infrmed travelers als are better able t distinguish between multinatinal cmpanies and lcal entrepreneurs whse businesses prvide direct scial, envirnmental, and ecnmic benefits fr lcal residents. Such businesses are in lve with the destinatin and are therefre deserving f market reward. In the lng run, being a respnsible traveler means ensuring net psitive impacts fr lcal peple and envirnments. With the infrmatin available at ur fingertips, there has never been mre pprtunity t d s.
12. What is the ppular assumptin abut internatinal turism?
A. Its benefits may cmpensate fr the adverse envirnmental cnsequences.
B. Its rapid develpment is attributed t peple’s imprved living standard.
C. It appeals t peple in places with favrable gegraphical cnditins.
D. It cntributes t the ecnmy f destinatin cuntries and regins.
13. Why des the authr say lcal residents f ppular destinatins ften feel frustrated?
A. They fall victim t scial cnflicts and envirnmental disturbances.
B. They have little pprtunity t enjy themselves n cruise ships.
C. They cannt find emplyment in multinatinal htel chains.
D. They d nt think they benefit as much as they deserve.
14. What d we learn frm sme studies abut uncntrlled turism develpment?
A. It gives rise t an increase in mass cnfrntatins.
B. It inhibits the steady grwth f lcal ecnmy.
C. It incurs lcal residents’ antagnism t turists.
D. It brings in a large chunk f mbile ppulatin.
