Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) is the practice f prviding a shrt perid f class time fr students t read silently whatever they chse accrding t their interests.SSR prgrams can be ffered at actually any grade level. Hwever,it takes a great deal f time,effrt,and knw-hw t put a successful SSR prgram int peratin. I first recgnized this when I was a high schl teacher twenty years ag. Thugh sme f my students were happy t be allwed t select and read bks in class, many never truly dived int their reading. I knew that there must be ways t imprve the implementatin(實(shí)施) f my SSR prgram, but I wasn't sure what they were.
Years later, when I returned t the University f Suthern Califrnia, I began analyzing a large sample f SSR studies t determine what made them effective and fund that successful prgrams shared five key factrs: easy access t reading materials, sufficiently interesting materials, teachers' encuragement, fllw-up activities and reading at least twice a week.
In fact, nly when teachers fllw specific guidelines d these prgrams achieve their full ptential. Having learned this, I decided t create an “ideal" SSR prgram fr my students by emplying the five factrs abve. At the same time, anther high schl in ur district als made the decisin t ffer students SSR time each day. Hwever, having n knwledge f the five factrs, the teachers simply asked their students t “read anything fr fifteen minutes."
The result was that the students at my schl utperfrmed (勝過) the ther schl in fur areas: reading cmprehensin, psitive attitudes tward reading, frequency f after-schl pleasure reading, and use f a wider range f reading surces. I shared my findings with the ther schl's staff members. Since then, bth schls have experienced the psitive benefits f SSR.
