Finally, West gt the schlarship, allwing her t attend Virginia State Cllege, a histrically black university.
West decided t majr in mathematics because it was a well-respected subject. It was largely studied by men, but she didn’t take much ntice f them as she knew deep in her heart that nthing was getting in her way. After graduating, she became a teacher. A few years later, she returned t the university and earned a master’s degree in mathematics. Then she was ffered a jb at a naval base in Dahlgren, Virginia. This made her nly the secnd black wman t be hired t wrk as a prgrammer at the base.
Despite her intellectual abilities and career success, West felt she was inferir. It was this feeling, deeply rted and felt, by many African Americans that drve her t wrk as hard as she culd. West determined t cmmit herself t her wrk, hping that by ding it t the best f her ability, she culd get recgnitin fr her wrk.
West did just that. In 1979, she became prject manager fr the Seasat prject, the first satellite that culd mnitr the ceans. She prgrammed an IBM 7030 Stretch cmputer, prviding faster calculatins fr an accurate Earthmdel. This detailed mathematical mdel f the shape f the Earth was a building blck fr what wuld becme the GPS rbit. In 1998, aged 68, she intended t fcus n her PhD after retirement. Learning t say “yes, and”
When I first heard abut the imprvisatin (即興交流) class, I was hesitating. As a quiet and shy girl, I feared imprvising in frnt f strangers. Hwever, I knew I wanted t wrk as a science cmmunicatr after finishing my Ph.D., s it seemed like a perfect chance t learn hw t speak and cmmunicate with thers effectively. I signed up, knwing the experience wuld give me help.
During ur first class, we learned an imprtant cncept f imprvisatin: “yes, and.” It means that, as imprvisers, we’d better accept what fellw perfrmers say. If smene says that rhins (犀牛) are librarians, fr example, then rhins are librarians. We d nt questin the lgic; we say “yes” and then cntinue with the scene as if nthing is wrng.
The first few scenes were hard, but as weeks turned int mnths, I became mre cmfrtable and even started t enjy ur classes. I became better at listening, relating t my cnversatin partners, and cmmunicating clearly in the mment. Once when I was giving a presentatin abut my science, an audience member surprised me with a questin that didn’t grw ut f the infrmatin I’d presented. Instead f getting cnfused and nervus, I tk the “yes, and” apprach—accepting the questin and letting my mind fcus n why it was asked. That helped me find an apprpriate answer. I gt pretty excited abut it.
The benefits f imprvisatin g beynd cmmunicatin. Befre attending the class, I wuld get stuck when my experiments prduced unexpected data, thinking that I had made a mistake. But nw, instead f getting discuraged, I will stay pen t the pssibility that the results are real, keep explring the data and end up identifying a new type f cell—ne that isn’t behaving as expected.
I think all scientists can benefit frm this lessn. If the data say rhins are librarians, then it’s wrth finding ut whether rhins are, in fact, librarians. As scientists, ur jb isn’t t challenge data that supprt, a precnceived stry, but t say “yes, and.”
28. Why did the authr attend the imprvisatin class?
A. T get a different experience.
B. T finish her Ph.D. at university.
C. T give up her jb as a science cmmunicatr.
D. T imprve her speaking and cmmunicating ability.
29. What was the authr’s change after attending the imprvisatin class?
A. She frmed her wn idea quickly.
B. She came up with lts f creative respnses.
C. She paid mre attentin t the lgic f answers.
D. She became a gd listener befre giving an pinin.
30. The authr mentins applying the “yes, and” apprach t her scientific experiments t ________.
A. explain the prcess f using the methd
B. prve the benefits f the imprvisatin class
C. share her wn research experiences with readers
D. attract fellw scientists t attend the imprvisatin class
31. What can be inferred abut scientists frm the last paragraph?
A. They shuld attend the imprvisatin class.
B. They shuld questin all precnceived ideas.
C. They shuld carry n research by admitting earlier data.
D. They shuld try t imprve their academic knwledge.
D
Scial distancing is nt a new cncept in the natural wrld, where infectius diseases are cmmnplace. Thrugh specialized senses animals can detect certain diseases and change their behavir t avid getting ill.
In 1966, while studying chimps (猩猩) in a Tanzanian natinal park, zlgist Jane Gdall bserved a chimp named McGregr wh had caught a highly infectius virus. “Fr a full tw minutes, ld McGregr sat mtinless, staring after them,” Gdall ntes in her 1971 bk In the Shadw f Man. “It’s really nt that different t hw sme scieties react tday t such a tragedy.”
Nt all animals are s aggressive tward their ailing neighbrs. Smetimes it’s as simple as aviding thse wh may infect yu.
When Kiesecker, a lead scientist in America, studied American bullfrg in the late 1990s, he fund that bullfrgs culd nt nly detect a deadly smell f infectin in ther bullfrgs, but healthy members actively avided thse that were sick. Bullfrgs rely n chemicals signals t determine wh is sick r nt.
Caribbean lbsters als shun diseased members f their cmmunity, well befre they becme infectius. It takes abut eight weeks fr lbsters infected with the deadly virus Panulirus argus mininucevirus t becme dangerus t thers. Nrmally scial animals, lbsters begin keeping away frm the diseased as early as fur weeks after infectin – nce the lbsters can smell certain chemicals released by sick individuals.
Overall, it’s imprtant t nte that, unlike us, animals dn’t realize if they stay hme, they might actually reduce the infectin rate,” Kiesecker explains. “As humans, we have that ability. It’s a big difference.”
32. What can we learn abut the chimps frm Gdall’s bservatin?

B. They became aggressive when infected.
C. The infected avided cntact with thers.

33. What des the underlined wrd “shun” in Paragraph 6 prbably mean?
A. Avid.B. Cure.C. Get rid f.D. Get alng with.

A. Humans are mre sensitive t virus.
B. Humans are less likely t get infected.
C. Humans treat infectius diseases in a wiser way.
D. Humans can detect chemical signals mre quickly.
35. Which might be the best title fr the text?
A. Help Me Out
B. Leave Me Alne
C. Stay Away Frm Us
D. Stay Hme Stay Healthy
