A new UK-based study n the effects f artificial light n lcal insect ppulatins fund that light pllutin frm street lamps disturbs insect behavir leading t an verall lss f insects.
“We fund that street lighting strngly reduced mth (飛蛾) ppulatin cmpared with unlit sites... and affected mth develpment,” the study stated.
The study’s results apply t a lcalized level and cannt be used t determine whether natinal-level ppulatins are declining due t light pllutin. Hwever, it adds further weight t existing research n hw light pllutin affects ecsystems and bidiversity htspts and highlights the need t shift t alternatives in artificial light that wuld tne dwn these effects.
The effects n insect ppulatins are wide-ranging. Mre specifically, artificial light affects hw mths lay their eggs and puts them at a higher risk f being sptted by predatrs (捕食性動物). It als affects mths’ feeding behavir, which subsequently leads t declines in their ppulatin t. Light pllutin thus jins a hst f factrs, such as climate change and defrestatin, as ne f the determinants f insect ppulatin decline.
While previus studies examined the effects f lighting n bats and ther vertebrates, this study fcused n their prey—creatures lwer dwn in the fd chain—and, as a result, cmplementing (補(bǔ)充) previus studies. Therefre, the study is cncerning because it suggests an alarming lss f insects caused by artificial light, which will have far-reaching cnsequences fr all the wildlife and ecsystems that depend n them.
Mrever, white light-emitting dides (LEDs) were fund t have the wrst impact n lcal insects and ecsystem prcesses. The researchers thus call fr shifting away frm white LEDs r emplying prcesses such as mtin sensrs t make the lights less bright and changing clrs and filters t avid the negative impacts. If the findings f the study are anything t g by, lcal insect ecsystems will suffer cnsiderable cnsequences- which will, in turn, affect the wildlife that depends n them and, ultimately, culd perhaps even upset agricultural balances.
