We have been taught frm a yung age that red means stp and green means g. S why were these clrs chsen fr traffic lights? And what’s the histry behind the clrs?
T trace the cnnectin between the clrs and traffic lights,we have t travel back in time t the earliest railrad signals (信號(hào)燈) develped in the 1830s. Thse first railrad signals were the frerunner f ur mdern stplights. Like mdern traffic cntrls, they cntained three lights:ne fr stp,ne fr cautin (警告),and ne fr g. The riginal clr system was different frm ur mdern system, thugh. Red meant stp, green meant cautin, and white meant g.
The chice f red fr stp was fairly bvius, since red — the clr f bld — has been assciated with danger fr thusands f years, lng befre cars were even arund. Scientifically speaking, red is the clr with the lngest wavelength which means that as it travels,it gets spread less in different directins than ther clrs,s it can be seen frm a greater distance.
Why green and white were chsen fr the ther signals remains a bit f a mystery. It’s pssible that the tw clrs were chsen because hw they cntrasted (反差) with red. This system f clr-cded signals remained in place (仍然有效) fr several decades until it became clear that using white fr g culd cause serius prblems. Arund 1914,a train signal’s red lights brke dwn, causing it t appear white. As a train apprached the signal,it was suppsed t stp,but the driver believed the white meant g. The result was a terrible train crash. After that, the clr fr g was eventually changed t green.
T prvide the mst cntrast between red and green, yellw was then chsen as the new clr fr cautin, because it can be seen well at all times f the day. After cars were invented and went int mass prductin,a similar signaling system was needed t cntrl the flw f traffic. When traffic lights were put up,it became standard fr them as well.
    28. Hw des the authr describe the riginal traffic lights?
    A. By listing an example.B. By ffering a suggestin.
    C. By making a cmparisn.D. By shwing the imprtance.
    29. Why is the clr red chsen fr stp?
    A. It is the easiest t recgnize all day lng.
    B. It reminds peple f accidents and danger.
    C. It spreads fastest in all directins in the air.
    D. It has prved the least harmless t ur eyes.
    30. What caused the accident in paragraph 4?
    A. The driver’s tiredness.B. The train’s high speed.
    C. The travel system’s shrtcming.D. The white light’s failing t wrk.
    31. Which can be the best title fr the text?
A Hw did the present traffic lights frm?
    B. Why was the first traffic system invented?
    C. Why did white disappear frm the traffic lights?
    D. Hw did an accident change the traffic systems?

Small grups f Canaanite letters discvered n brken pieces f pttery befre did nt leave much rm fr further research n the lives f the Canaanites. But this find f a sentence written in the first letter-based language pens up the debate abut the histry during the ancient time perid.

Canaanites were the first t use letters in their writing system. “It shws that even in the mst ancient times there were full sentences, which further suggests that Canaanites std ut amng the early civilizatins in their use f the written wrd.”
