The end f a semester can be a challenging time fr students. Kids frm elementary schl thrugh high schl are already stressed after mre than a year f C0VID-19 disrupted learning. Pressing thrugh the last few weeks f a semester can be discuraging, especially fr lder students with demanding final prjects and exams.
“Parents’ fears abut their kids are s ften nt abut the present but the future — a fear that kids wh are struggling will get stuck there. But kids rarely stay stuck, in part because they t want their lives t wrk ut,” says Ned Jhnsn, a test preparatin expert. When children shw signs f stress, parents shuld respnd by fcusing n mental health, nt achievement r grades.
Families can create a sense f safety fr children by establishing rutines fr the day and week, especially thse that emphasize cnnectin, such as family dinnertime and a bedtime chat. Parents shuld meet kids with empathy and listening, instead f trying t slve their prblems. Fr example, we can nrmalize family cnversatin abut the ups and dwns f the day. As Madeline Levine, a psychlgist, put it: let yur children “brrw yur calm”.
In additin, peer supprt prgrams can als play an imprtant rle in teaching skills fr stress management and wellness. “Teens will talk t ther teens, especially when they feel they are in a brave space built n trust,” Katie Hurley, a psychtherapist says.
Sme children may arrive at the finish line exhausted and needing sleep. Or perhaps they are eager t celebrate the hlidays with all the usual fanfare. Hnr yur child’s wishes and plan t create the break that fits yur family’s needs. McKenna Reitz, a mm frm Tled, Ohi, plans fr her daughters Karsen, 9, and Maddx, 6, t enjy time ff with family and friends. The idea f turning recycled plastic bttles int clthing is nt new. During the past five years, a large number f clthing cmpanies, businesses and envirnmental rganizatins have started turning plastics int clthing t deal with plastic pllutin. But there's a prblem with this methd. Research nw shws that micrfibers(微纖維)culd be the biggest surce f plastic in the sea.
Dr. Mark Brwne in Santa Barbara, Califrnia, has been studying plastic pllutin and micrfibers fr 10 years. He explains that every time synthetic(合成的)clthes g int a washing machine, a large number f plastic fibers fall ff. Mst washing machines can't cllect these micrfibers. S every time the water gets ut f a washing machine, micrfibers enter the sewer and finally end up in the sea.
In 2011, Brwne wrte a paper stating that a single piece f synthetic clthing can prduce mre than 1,900 fibers per wash. Brwne cllected samples(樣本)frm seawater and freshwater sites arund the wrld, and used a special way t examine each sample. He discvered that every single water sample cntained micrfibers.
This is bad news fr a number f reasns. Plastic can cause harm t sea life when eaten. Studies have als shwn that plastic can take in ther pllutants.
Based n this evidence, it may seem surprising that cmpanies and rganizatins have chsen t turn plastic waste int clthing as an envirnmental "slutin". Ever thugh the science has been arund fr a while, Brwne explains that he's had a difficult time getting cmpanies t listen. When he asked well-knwn clthing cmpanies t supprt "Benign by Design", his research prject, which is trying t get clthes that have a bad effect n humans and the envirnment ut f the market, Brwne didn't get a satisfying answer. Only ne wmen's clthing cmpany, Eileen Fisher, ffered Brwne funding.
What can we learn frm the first paragraph?
New micrfibers have been discvered
Making clthes frm plastic bttles can't reduce the pllutin.
The use f plastic bttle has been reduced in the past five years.
Turning recycled plastic bttles int clthing hasn't been put int practice.
What's the main idea f the secnd paragraph?
Hw t wash synthetic clthes.
Hw t prevent plastic pllutin
Hw micrfibers end up in the sea.
Relatinship between plastic pllutin and micrfibers. 34.Hw des Brwne's Benign by Design research prject run?
A.It has achieved great success.B.It is facing sme difficulties C.It is knwn t very few peple.D.It hasn't gt anything dne.
What's the best title fr the text?
A.Recycled plastic clthing: slutin r pllutin?
B.Micrfibers, the biggest surce f plastic in the sea C.Envirnmental prtectin: mving frward r backward?
D.Turning plastic int clthing, a new step in envirnmental prtectin
