Georgy was now a schoolboy, though it had given Amelia great pain to release him from her care, to mix with rough boys and to be scolded by stern schoolteachers. It was a little local school, and Georgy loved it, doing well at all his lessons and coming home in the evenings with boastful stories of this and that-all of which were believed by his fond mother.
Miss Dobbin followed Georgy's progress with interest, and was keen to be helpful, well aware how poor the Sedleys were.
“Do let Georgy spend the day with me next Saturday," she said to Amelia one day. “Miss Osborne is coming to visit, and I know she'd love to see her brother's son. And who knows, perhaps the boy's grandfather will do something for him one day.”
…
The meeting took place, and Georgy charmed his aunt, as he did all the women in his life. Miss Osborne, at the dinner table with her father that night, could not hide her emotion.
“What's the matter?” old Mr. Osborne growled at last.
Georgy's aunt burst into tears. “Oh sir,” she said. “I've seen little George. He's such a beautiful boy-and so like his father!”
The old man did not say a word, but his hands trembled, and he sat staring at the table for a long time.
Soon Georgy told his mother about another visitor at the house on a day he spent with Miss Dobbin.
“An old gentleman came today," the boy said. “He watched when I had my riding lesson with Miss Dobbin's coachman. He had very thick eyebrows, and he stared and stared at me.”
Then Amelia knew that the boy had seen his grandfather, and she waited fearfully to see what would happen next.
It was a visit from a lawyer, with a letter from Mr. Osborne, read aloud in the lawyer's dry voice.
“Mr. Osborne offers to take his grandson George, who will then inherit the fortune which would have gone to his father. He will also give Mrs. Amelia Osborne a regular allowance, to enable her and her family to live in comfort. If she marries again, as is said to be likely, this allowance will still continue. In return, the boy will live with Mr. Osborne, who will permit him to visit his mother occasionally in her own home.”
Amelia was rarely angry, but today she stood up, tore this letter into a hundred pieces, and threw them on the floor.
“Marry again! Take money - to part from my child! Who dares to insult me in this way? Tell Mr. Osborne it is a cowardly letter. I will not answer it. Good day, sir!"

Teacher burnout (倦怠) and student stress may be linked, according to a University of British Columbia study. The study is the first of its kind to examine the connection between teacher burnout and students' cortisol levels (皮質(zhì)醇水平), which are a biological indicator of stress.
Researchers collected saliva samples from over 400 elementary school children and tested their cortisol levels. They found that in classrooms in which teachers experienced more burnout, or feelings of emotional exhaustion, students' cortisol levels were elevated. Higher cortisol levels in elementary school children have been linked to learning difficulties as well as mental health problems.
“This suggests that stress spreading might be taking place in the classroom among students and their teachers,” said Eva Oberle, the study's lead author. Indeed, the relationship between student stress and teacher burnout is a chicken and egg question. It is unknown what came first - elevated cortisol or teacher burnout. We consider the connection between student and teacher stress a cyclical problem in the classroom.
Oberle said a stressful classroom climate could be a result of inadequate support for teachers, which may impact teachers' ability to effectively manage their students. A poorly managed classroom can contribute to students' needs not being met and increasing stress. This could be reflected in elevated cortisol levels in students.
Alliteratively, stress could originate from students, who may be more challenging to teach because of increases in anxiety, behavioral problems, or special needs. In this situation, teachers could feel overwhelmed and report higher levels of burnout.
“Our study is a reminder of the systemic issues facing teachers and educators as classroom sizes increase and supports for teachers are cut,” said Oberle.
“It is clear from a number of recent research studies that teaching is one of the most stressful professions, and that teachers need adequate resources and support in their jobs in order to battle burnout and relieve stress in the classroom," said UBC education professor Kimberly Schonert-Reichl, the study's co-author and director of HELP. “If we do not support teachers, we risk the collateral damage of students.”
28. What can we learn from paragraphs 4 and 5?
A. students' behavioral problems contribute to teacher's higher level of burnout.
B. teacher burnout is the cause of the elevated cortisol levels in students.
C. the connection between students and teacher stress is a cyclical problem.
D. students with higher stress level are more likely to have learning difficulties.
29. According to the writer, what problem are many British teachers facing?
A. teachers are not well trained to deal with students' problems
B. there are more students in each class and less support for teachers
C. teachers' income increases but teaching resources are cut
D. there is a widening gap between students' need and teachers' ability
30. What does the underlined word “collateral" in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. connected B: critical C. necessary D. physical
31. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Teacher burnout, avoidable or not?
B. How to Relieve Stress in the Class?
C. The Most Stressful Profession in the World.
D. Students Stress and Teacher Burnout: A chicken and egg question.

Children between 4 months and 2 years old who have had covid-19 are more likely to have antibodies that attack cells that make insulin(胰島素), a feature of type 1 diabetes.
Insulin, a hormone that regulates the body's blood sugar levels, is made in the pancreas(胰腺) by cell clusters known as islets of Langerhans. In some cases, the body can develop an autoimmune response to these islets and produce auto- antibodies against them. Too many of these over time will kill enough islets to trigger type 1 diabetes, where the body can't produce its own insulin.
“The presence of these auto-antibodies more or less means that there's a 100 per cent path to [type 1 diabetes]” says Anette-Gabriele Ziegler at the Technical University of Munich in Germany.
One of the risk factors for type 1 diabetes is thought to be some viral infections, including SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes covid-19. A rise in diabetes cases linked to covid-19 has been reported, but the mechanism behind it isn't known.
To investigate, Ziegler and her colleagues monitored 885 children between the ages of 4 months and 2 years old, who were all identified as having at least a small risk of developing islet auto-antibodies. Of the children, 170 had SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, suggesting they had previously had covid-19.
The children who had these antibodies were twice as likely to develop islet auto-antibodies as those who hadn't been infected. Those who caught covid-19 before they were 18 months old had a 5 to 10 times higher risk of developing the auto-antibodies, making them the most at risk group.
“We would love to see if vaccinating children from 6 months can prevent the autoimmunity that leads to type 1 diabetes,” says Ziegler.
32. What can we know from the passage about type 1 diabetes?
A. Adults are less likely to have type 1 diabetes. B. Auto-antibodies will help cure type 1 diabetes.
C. Some viral infections may lead to type 1 diabetes. D. Type 1 diabetes occurs only in children.
33. What is the purpose of Ziegler and her colleagues' study?
A. To clarify the identification of infectious viruses.
B. To explore the connection between covid-19 and increasing diabetes cases.
C. To investigate the number of children who had previously had covid-l9.
D. To reveal the mechanism of how the body produces auto- antibodies.
34. What is Ziegler's attitude to the function of vaccination ?
A. favorable B. expectant C. critical D. indifferent
35. What's the main idea of the text?
A. Covid -19 is linked to higher risk of type 1 diabetes in children,
B. Insulin regulates the body's blood sugar levels.
C. Auto-antibodies kill islets of Langerhans.
D. Vaccination serves as the best way to prevent type 1 diabetes.

I count myself among the polyglots who know several languages! I grew up speaking only French and started learning English in middle school, then German, then Latin and Ancient Greek, then Italian... and I never stopped, I have studied 21 languages to date- some for decades and others for just a few months 36
Tip 1: Practice consistently
In my experience, setting aside 15 minutes a day for practice is more efficient for acquiring a language than doing a single three-hour block once a week, especially if you're not an advanced speaker. Think of it like the compounding principle of wealth: 37
Tip 2: Record yourself
38 . Sometimes I just talk about whatever topic I want, other times I record myself while I'm on the phone, or I ask a friend if 1 can record a conversation we're about. to have. On the one hand, listening to those recordings allows me to feel proud of what I can do in the language. 39 , get stuck in the middle of a sentence, or not understand something that's being said to me, and then to really zoom in on the issue. Listening to the recordings benefits me a lot.
Tip 3: Be compassionate
Being kind to yourself while learning, a language will ,do .some magic for you! There are many ways to apply self-compassion to learning: for example: Remember that it takes time to build both accuracy and comfort using the language, so set realistic goals. Be patient if you don't reach those goals as quickly as you were hoping! Don't beat yourself up if you don't sound how you'd like after one, two or even 15 years. 40 which hinders your progress. Welcome any mistakes and use them to improve. Don't compare yourself to other learners. There is room for all at the language-learning table!
A. Here are 3 tips for all language learners
B. Many language learners ignore the method
C. This is one of my very favorite learning tricks
D. Trying too hard to perfect an accent can give you performance anxiety
E. And on the other, it gives me an opportunity to hear myself make mistakes
F. Pushing yourself out the comfort zone will make you achieve greater progress
G. Saving a little every month over a long stretch of time is more effective than trying to save a lump sum before retirement.

Chinese state media has praised a viral video series telling the story of a jade teapot coming to life and fleeing the British Museum to make 56 (it) way back home.
The set of three short episodes, entitled Escape from the British Museum, shows 57 teapot turning into a young woman in a green dress, who then engages a London-based Chinese journalist to help her reunite with her family. State broadcaster CCTV also gave the short films a glowing review 53 (say): “We are very pleased to see Chinese young people are passionate about history and tradition... We are also looking forward to the early return of Chinese artefacts that 64 (display) overseas.”

The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read beneath a willow tree. It must be as sick, for the branches were kind of yellow and dry. I was a deserted girl. Endless quarrels with my parents had left me nowhere to go but this desolate (荒無人煙的) corner of the park. As I sat on the bench, things that happened recently began to flash through. Days schemed months to me recently. No cozy home to stay. No happy memories about my life. No considerate family members to talk to. Even the book I was reading was no fun. Not content with life, I had a good reason to frown, for the world was intended to drag me
down.
And if that were not enough to ruin my day, a young boy out of breath approached me, all tired from play. He stood right in front of me with his head tilted (傾斜) down and said with great excitement, “Look what I found!" In bis hand was a flower. What a pitiful sight, its petals (花瓣) were all worn--not enough rain, or too little light. He must have picked the flower from somewhere shady and sunless, just like where I was staying these days. I couldn't help being self-pitying. Wanting him to take his dead flower away and go off to play, I faked a smile and then looked away. “Why couldn't everyone just leave me be!" I thought to myself, upset and gloomy.
But instead of leaving, he sat next to me and placed the flower to his nose and declared loudly with certainty, “It sure smells pretty and it must be beautiful, too. That's why I picked it; here, it is for you.” The “weed” before me was dying or dead, not vibrant with colors, orange, yellow or red- -anyone having eyes can see that clearly! But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower, and replied, “Just what I need.” Strangely, instead of placing the flower in my hand, he held it in mid-air without any reason or plan.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I'm Li Hua, a student from Junhua Middle School. Hearing that you are looking for volunteers for a Summer Camp for students from different countries to be organized in Wuhan, I'm writing to apply for the position.
I think I am qualified for this position. First of all, being a sociable and responsible person, I will take this, job seriously and be able to deal with any emergency. Besides, I have a good command of English, which can make it easy to communicate with foreigners. What matters most is that I'll be capable of helping students from other countries to know more about China and promoting the multicultural communication and development among different countries as well.
I'd appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
One possible version:
Casting a curious glance at the boy 's eyes, I was hugely shocked. In the pure and sunny face were just a pair of eyes, somewhat hollow and focusless. “He was blind!" I felt myself choked as if there were a lump in my throat. With watery eyes, I took the flower from his hand carefully and praised it as the very best one. “Have a nice day!" the boy smiled broadly and then ran off briskly before I had time to convey the slightest appreciation. I sat there and wondered how a blind little boy managed to see a self-pitying girl under a sick willow tree and how he even knew clearly of my dreadful despair.
“I had to make a change,” I thought to myself. For all of those times I myself had been blind towards the world around me. Somehow, through the eyes of the blind boy, at last I could see my real problem. I promised to step out of the shady corner, open my eyes to the beauty of the world. Holding the wilted flower up to my nose, I took a deep sniff. A wave of faint fragrance lingering in my heart, I couldn't help smiling just as the boy had done. Never did he know that his weed-like flower brought the first glimmer of sunshine to a girl's deserted world.

Text 2

Text 3
W: I need a break. I have been working so hard this year. Time to book another week at the beach.
M: I feel the same way. (3) Let's look at some destinations and decide where to go.
W: I have a few places in mind already.
Text4
M: Fancy a game of table tennis if the sun comes out in a litle bit?

W: I'm pretty nervous about next Monday's maths test.
M: Why? You are great with numbers.
W: Yes, in general. But this is all about times tables and I always forget, especially with the multiple of eight. Is there anything I can do? (⑥)
M: Sure, do what I do. Keep on writing them down until you get them all correct. This will also help you to find out exactly which ones you keep on forgetting.
W: Good idea. I'll give that a shot. Thank you so much.
M: No problem, that's what friends are for.
Text 7
W: What a lovely day! The birds are singing, the sky is blue, and the sun is shining. I love the warm feeling of the sun on my skin. (8) I think I'll spend the afternoon relaxing in the garden.
M: Before you do that, consider what the sun is, and what that warm feeling on your skin really is too.
W: Excuse me?
M: The sun is basically a big burning ball of nuclear(核能的) energy. Too much of it can cause damage to your health. (8)
W: 0Oh...
M: There's more - the sun is the largest thing in our solar system. You could fit over 1.3 million Earths in it. But the sun is an average-sized star. Some stars are more than 700 times bigger! Sit down and I'll tell you even more about the sun. (9)
W: Please don't! I'm not interested. (9) I will apply some sun cream just in case.
Text 8
M: I can't believe it's been over two months since I last saw you. How has your first term at university gone? Are you enjoying it?
W: It's been brilliant! I was feeling homesick during the first few weeks, but that didn't last long. The courses are so interesting, and I've met so many amazing new people.
M: I thought you'd enjoy it, and I'm glad you're not missing home too much. Your mother and I met at university and we both look back at our time there with great fondness. (10)
W: I know- you're always telling me that! (10) So, what brings you to the city? (1) Are you here for holiday?
M: Well, I'm here to attend a meeting to discuss the cooperation between our company and another company. (11) I've booked a small hotel by the river, and I had a lovely walk there earlier. I'm taking some business partners out to dinner tonight, but then I'm free all day tomorrow.
W: Great! Do you want to join me and my new friends at the open- air concert tomorrow evening?
(12)
M: You don't think I'm too old for that sort of thing?
W:Notatall-itwillbefun!
M: OK, why not? (12)
M: Welcome to Fitness Direct. I am your personal trainer for today. How are you feeling?
W: I'm OK, a little nervous though.
M: Take it easy. Working out should be fun, not stressful. Can I begin by asking your fitness goals?
W: Well, I wish to lose around two kilos and basically build up the strength of my muscles. (13)
M: OK, that sounds reasonable. May 1 ask your current weight? (13)
W: Yes, I am 50 kilos now. (13)
M: How much exercise do you currently do per week on average?
W: Around three hours. I go swimming on Tuesdays, I dance on Wednesdays, and on Sunday mornings I play badminton. (14)
M: That's excellent. May I ask you about your diet?
W: Well, I try to be healthy, but I like pizza and cakes, so I don't always eat well.
M: What is your job? Are you tied down to a desk most of the day? (15)
W: Sadly yes. I have to sit in front of the computer most of the time. (15)
M: Well, you have given me some great information, so I can come up with a weekly timetable for you.
W: Great. What shall we begin with first?
M: Right now, I'd like you to warm up with a 10-minute jog, OK?
W: Sure.
Welcome everyone to the London Museum of Ancient Eastern Art. We haven't been receiving school groups for long. In fact, you are one of the first groups, so your advice is welcome. We will try our best to guide you around the rooms and tell you about the amazing objects inside. Please feel free to have some food or drinks before we get in, (18) and you can buy some gifts from the store to your right during the tour. Then, take a look at your brochures, which show the map of the building and where all the exhibits are. (19) There is also information about the history of this museum. Construction of the biggest and oldest room, Langston Gallery, began under Sir Charles Langston. (20) This is where we will be spending the majority of our time. Unfortunately, he never got the chance to see the museum completed in his lifetime. Later, other people took over the project upon his death, and finished it ten years later in 1895. (20) The museum you see today took shape in 1905, with the addition of a second floor. We will not be going there, since it contains the special collection. You must book an appointment if you wish to see any of the items contained within it.

根據(jù)第四段第- -句話“Oberle said a stressful classroom climate could be a result of inadequate support for teachers, which may impact teachers' ability to effectively manage their students." (奧伯勒說,緊張的課堂氣氛可能是對教師支持不足的結(jié)果,這可能會影響教師有效管理學生的能力)”以及第五段第- -句話“Alternatively, stress could originate from students, who may be more challenging to teach because of increases in anxiety, behavioral problems, or special needs. In this situation, teachers could feel overwhelmed and report higher levels of burnout.”(或者, 壓力可能源于學生,由于焦慮、行為問題或特殊需求的增加,他們可能更難教。在這種情況下, 教師可能會感到不知所措,并報告更高程度的倦怠)可知,緊張的課堂氛圍會影響老師有效的管理學生,而學生焦慮、行為問題等的增加讓他們更難教,這樣就會造成老師更高程度的倦怠。由此可知,第四段和第五段旨在明確學生和教師壓力之間的聯(lián)系是一個循環(huán)性問題。故選C。
29.B [解析] 細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第六段“Our study is a reminder of the systemic issues facing teachers and educators as classroom sizes increase and supports for teachers are cut," said Oberle.(奧伯勒說:“我們的研究提醒我們,隨著教室規(guī)模的增加和對教師的支持的減少,教師和教育工者面臨著系

根據(jù)第一段第 - -句話“Teacher burnout(倦怠)and student stress may be linked, according to a University of Brtish Columbia study.”(根據(jù)不列顛哥倫比亞大學的一-項研究,教師倦怠和學生壓力可能有聯(lián)系)和第三段的“Indeed, the relationship between student stress and teacher burnout is a chicken and egg question. It is unknown what came first - elevated cortisol or teacher burnout. We consider the connection between student and teacher stress a cyclical problem in the classroom.”(事實上,學生壓力和教師倦怠之間的關(guān)系是一個先有雞還是先有蛋的問題。

To investigate, Ziegler and her colleagues monitored 885 children between the ages of 4 months and 2 years old, who were all identified as having at least a small risk of developing islet auto-antibodies.,齊格勒和她的同事們想要弄清與covid-19 相關(guān)的糖尿病病例數(shù)量上升背后的機制。故選B.
34.B推理判斷題,根據(jù)文章最后一段,“We would love to see if vaccinating children from 6 months can prevent the autoimmunity that leads to type 1 diabetes," says Ziegler.研究者們很想看看給6個月大的兒童接種疫苗是否能預(yù)防導(dǎo)致1型糖尿病的自身免疫,可推斷出齊格勒對疫苗接種功能的態(tài)度是期待的。故選B.
35.A主旨大意題,根據(jù)文章第- - 段Children between 4 months and 2 years old who have had covid-19 are more likely to have antibodies that attack cells that make insulin, a feature of type 1 diabetes. 故選A。

39.E [解析]段中句考查,空前On the one hand (一方面.... ...后面接And on the other (另一方面.....
Set realistic gal...,.. Be ptiet...,. Don't beat yourself up..

Dear Sir or Madam,
I'm Li Hua, a student from Junhua Middle School. Hearing that you are looking for volunteers for a Summer Camp for students from different countries to be organized in Wuhan, I'm writing to apply for the position.
I think I am qualified for this position. First of all, being a sociable and responsible person, I will take this job seriously and be able to deal with any emergency.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua.
