Recently I spke t sme f my students abut what they wanted t d after they graduated, and what kind f jb prspects they thught they had.
Cnsidering that I teach students wh are trained t be dctrs, I was surprised t find that mst thught that they wuld nt be able t get the jbs they wanted withut “utside help”. “What kind f help is that?” I asked, expecting them t tell me that they wuld need a relative r family friend t help them ut.
“Surgery(外科手術(shù))”, ne replied. I was pretty shcked by that respnse. It seems that the graduates f tday are increasingly willing t g under the knife t get ahead f thers when it cmes t getting a jb. One girl tld me that she was cnsidering surgery t increase her height. “They break yur legs, put in special things, and slwly expand the gap between the tw ends f the bne as it regrws. Yu can get at least 5cm taller!”
At that pint, I was shcked. I am shrt. I can’t deny that, but I dn’t think I wuld put myself thrugh mnths f pain just t be a few centimeters taller. I dn’t even bther t wear shes with thick sles, as I’m nt trying t hide the fact that I am just nt tall!
It seems t me that there is a trend tward wanting “perfectin”, and that is an ideal that just des nt exist in reality.
N ne is brn perfect, hwever, magazines, TV shws and mvies present images f thin, tall, beautiful peple as being the nrm(標(biāo)準(zhǔn)). Advertisements fr slimming aids, beauty treatments and csmetic surgery clinics fill the pages f newspapers, further creating an idea that “perfectin” is a requirement, and that yu must g fr it, n matter what the cst. In my pinin, skills, rather than appearance, shuld determine hw successful a persn is in his chsen career.

media shuld be criticised fr misleading yung peple t d surgery
it is ne’s appearance instead f skills that really matters in ne’s career
What des the authr think f his height?
He dislikes being called a shrt man.B. He tries t increase his height thrugh surgery.
C. He always wears shes with thick sles t hide the fact.

There’s a whle lt f things that peple fill their stmachs with. Sme f them keep peple alive. Sme f them taste gd t peple. Sme f them help peple win pie-eating cntests. Alchl des nne f thse things. Why d peple keep drinking it? And what des it d nce it gets t their stmachs?
There are all kinds f alchl mlecules(分子),but the ne that peple mst ften pur dwn their thrat is ethanl (乙醇).Ethanl is very tiny and it disslves in water, s it gets int all srts f places that it’s nt suppsed t. Alchl heads fr the digestive system. Because it disslves in water, it can get int the water in the bldstream. Because ethanl, t a certain extent, can pass thrugh cell membranes( 膜 ). It can g almst anywhere. It spreads thrugh the muscles, and is sweated—unmetablized( 未經(jīng)新陳代新的) and whle—thrugh the skin. It gets int the heart. It even takes a walk thrugh the brain, and this is the secret f its pwers.
Alchl depresses the nerves, and the nerves affect almst every area f the bdy. Enugh alchl makes peple sleep, s peple wh becme uncnscius chke n their wn vmit(嘔吐物). Mst wrryingly, enugh alchl can shut dwn thse parts f the brain just like any ther parts. Peple becme uncnscius and their brains simply frget t breathe.
Alchl is brken dwn in the liver. Alchl desn’t destry the liver, but prducts that the liver breaks the alchl int d cause damage. A glass f wine per day can nt d any harm. Instead, it can prevent heart attacks r can make smene functinally yung. And it is kind f nice t knw that smetimes, relaxatin and cheer can be bttled. All that’s needed is t take care hw much alchl is let int a persn’s brain.
Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic f the text?
By statement. B. By questin. C. By arguing. D. By explaining.
Why can Alchl reach the brain?
Because it can mve thrugh water mlecules in the bld.
Because it is small enugh t get thrugh any narrw space.
Because it is s light that the bldstream can transprt it.
Because it is absrbed nly by the cells in the stmach.
What’s the main idea f Paragraph 3?
Alchl affects the wrk f the nerves.B. Alchl has an effect n peple’s breath.
C. Peple are drunk when their brains get drunk.
D. Drinking t much is quite dangerus.
Frm the passage, we can knw.
many peple like a drink when they feel relaxed
enugh alchl can cntrl the brain activities
alchl damage the liver indirectly
prper alchl may lead t better sleep
What suggestin des the authr give n drinking alchl?
Cntrlling the time f drinking.B. Cntrlling the amunt f drinking.
C. Chsing the kind f drink.D. Chsing the place f drinking.

In tday’s mtivatinal literature, failure is ften viewed as smething t be celebrated. Inspiratinal speakers are fnd f quting the wrds f the nvelist Samuel Beckett-“Fail again. Fail better.” It seems that disappintments are an essential stepping stne t success, a turning pint in ur life stry that will ultimately end in victry.
Hwever, psychlgical researches find mst f us struggle t handle failure cnstructively. In ther wrds, we fail t “fail frward”. We find ways t devalue the task at which we failed, and becme less mtivated t persevere and reach ur gals. This phenmenn is knwn as the “sur-grape effect”, which was discvered by Prfessr Hallgeir Sjastad.
Sjastad explains that “sur-grape effect” is a self-prtective mechanism. “Mst f us picture urselves as cmpetent peple, s when external feedback suggests therwise, it pses a serius threat t that self-image,” he says. “The easiest way ut is t deny r explain away the external signal, s we can reduce the incnsistency and preserve a psitive sense f self. We d this even withut nticing.”
If yu have ne bad interview fr yur dream jb, yu might cnvince yurself that yu dn’t really want it at all, and stp applying fr similar psitins. The same ges if yu fail t impress at a sprts trial, r if a publisher rejects the first submissin f yur manuscript. “We tend t explain away ur shrtcmings and cnvince urselves ur ‘Plan C’ is actually ur ‘Plan A’,” Sjastad says.
It desn’t mean we shuld persevere in gals all the time. It can be healthy t change ambitins if the prcess is n lnger making us happy. But the “sur-grape effect may lead us t cme t this decisin prematurely, rather than hanging n a little and seeing whether we might learn and imprve.
Failures are unavidable. By learning t face the disappintment instead f devaluing its imprtance and pretending nthing happened, yu may find it easier t achieve yur gals.
Why des the authr mentin the speech f inspiratinal speakers in paragraph 1?
T ffer an example t handle failure.
T describe a shallw understanding f failure.
T intrduce a cmmn attitude twards failure.
T emphasize the imprtance f experiencing failure.
What can we learn frm the paragraph 3 abut the “sur-grape effect”?
It prtects us frm false feedback.B.It pictures us as cmpetitive peple. C.It pses a severe threat t self-image.D.It denies negative feedback t urselves.
What is the authr’s attitude twards failure?
Shrt-sighted.B.Wait-and-see.C.Objective.D.Skeptical.
What des the underlined wrd “prematurely” in paragraph 5mean?
Unhappily.B.Mistakenly.C.Hurriedly.D.Carelessly.
Which statement wuld the authr mst prbably agree with?
Dn’t escape when ur self-image is brken.
Dn’t quit when gals n lnger make yu happy.
Never hesitate t replace “Plan A” with “Plan C”.
Never frget t maintain a psitive sense f self.

I was in a lcal stre recently when I saw smething that pened a windw int my sul, which helped let in a little mre light.
