Which’s more important: Your employee or your customer? A popular business expression is, “The customer is always right.” But you should never say “always”.
The owners of a restaurant in Alaska won international praise after protecting their autistic (自閉的) employee.
When the employee delivered the wrong food to a customer’s house, that customer reacted violently and unkindly. Even after the employee corrected the mistake, the customer continued to shout. And that same customer was even rude to the restaurant owners’ daughter. So the owners “fired” the customer.
Restaurant owners P.J. and Spiro Gialopsos have added the customer to the restaurant’s “Do Not Deliver” list. That customer is now persona non grata, Latin for “an unwelcome person”.
P.J. Gialopsos wrote on the restaurant’s Facebook page, “You would think the majority of the population would have learned or at least heard about autism.”
Gialopsos said, “The employee has worked at the Little Italy Restaurant in Anchorage, Alaska, for two years. He was very upset about the angry customer.”
Gialopsos describes the employee as a seriously gifted university student who is curious about the world. She adds that the employee also has “an amazing personality, great sense of humor and a strong work ethic.”
“This employee is also one who will not have to deal with that rude customer anymore,” added Gialopsos.
Reached at home by reporters, Gialopsos says she is happy about the positive comments she and her husband are receiving. By Tuesday afternoon, her Facebook posting about the incident received more than 30,000 “Likes” and hundreds of positive comments. Comments and e-mails came from Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Namibia and the United Arab Emirates.
Gialopsos said she spent a couple of emotional days crying over the posts on the Facebook page. She adds that many parents from around the country who have children with autism wrote to her about the incident. “Their stories broke my heart,” she said. Another comment on Facebook that she found “striking” is a woman who thanked them for hiring someone who is “differently-abled”.
4. Why did the owners of the restaurant receive praise?
A. They would always put their customers first.
B They had a “Do Not Deliver” list in their restaurant.
C. They fired a customer for hurting their autistic worker.
D. They promised to deliver food to their customers’ house.
5. What made the customer angry?

B. He didn’t get the food he ordered.
C. The owners’ daughter was very impolite.
D. He was considered as an unwelcome person.
6. Why did Gialopsos cry when she read the posts on Facebook?
A. Because she was moved by others’ comments.
B. Because children with autism were thankful to her.
C. Because nobody understood what she had done.
D. Because stories on the Facebook page hurt her feelings.

In Thailand, people use about eight plastic bags each day, almost 200 billion bags each year. As for causing ocean plastic pollution, Thailand is in the sixth place in the whole world. Thailand is waking up to the harmful effects of plastic pollution on our environment
A supermarket chain in northern Thailand is returning to natural materials for everyday packaging(包裝) use, including banana leaves. At first sight, Rimping supermarket in Chiang Mai looks just like other supermarkets that use banana leaves to wrap (包裹) food across Thailand. However, it is unusual to see this traditional, biodegradable (可生物降解的) way used in a big way. Rimping Supermarket says that it no longer provides plastic bags every Wednesday for customers upon entering the place. In the supermarket, something different can be seen on the goods shelves of fresh vegetables. Instead of plastic, fresh products are wrapped in banana leaves. The leaves are great for packaging and once the customer is done with the packaging, the leaves are biodegradable, greatly reducing the need for plastics.
“We have discussed our environmental programme for a long time in our company,” a manager of Rimping Supermarket said. “We tried other materials before, but banana leaves are our final choice since there are plenty of banana leaves in Thailand. But the difficulty is to find a way to keep the products fresh. Some vegetables are not suitable to be wrapped in banana leaves as it becomes too wet and doesn’t keep its freshness,” the manager said.
Rimping Supermarket’s store programme can be seen as a huge step for a greener, plastic-free earth.
8. What is the problem described in the first paragraph?
A. Thai shop too frequently. B. Thai overpack their food.
C. Thai pollute rivers seriously. D. Thai use too many plastics.
9. What can we learn about using banana leaves to wrap food?
A. It isn’t something new in Thailand.
B. It is supported by the Thai government.
C. It first started from Rimping Supermarket.
D. It will be put into practice in more supermarkets.
10. Why did Rimping Supermarket finally choose banana leaves to wrap food?
A. They are cheap.
B. They are easy to get.
C. They are the most environment-friendly.
D. They are perfect for wrapping fresh food.
11. What’s the text mainly about?
A. A supermarket finds best ways to sell fresh food.
B. Plastic packaging causes serious problems.
C. Banana leaves replace plastic packaging.
D. Supermarkets shouldn’t offer plastic bags.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. B 11. C

Imagine being at a movie theater. You are watching a movie you’ve been waiting months to see. All of a sudden, a man’s cell phone rings. Not only does the man answer it, he keeps talking on the phone for a long time. Situations like this lead many people to support cell phone blocking (屏蔽) equipment. While this is quite understandable, it’s much fairer and safer to allow people to use their cell phones in movie theaters.
Using cell phones in movie theaters is a matter of culture. If you look around a theater, most people there are not using phones and are enjoying the film they paid to see. The few bad apples are those that are rude in almost all situations. The ones that shout at waiters and cut in line. Putting in the blocking equipment would punish everyone, not just the impolite, but the well-mannered people as well.
Many theaters already have punishments in place for people who use their cell phones in a troublesome way while in movies. At theaters I have been to, they periodically have workers come in and see if there are rude phone users. If they notice anyone breaking theater rules, they have the power to remove people from the area. That’s enough to prevent most moviegoers from using cell phones in an unacceptable way.
Another argument against putting in cellphone blocking equipment is emergency situations. There are times when people might be getting a message that requires them to leave the theater. Some of these might be car accidents, births, deaths, or someone getting locked out etc. All of these are situations that would just require someone to immediately leave the theater.
Putting in cell phone blocking equipment would be unfair to those who know how to use their phones politely. The answer to this problem is to make sure rules are followed, not to prevent everyone in the theater from using their cell phones.
12. Which word can describe the man mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. Patient. B. Impolite. C. Friendly. D. Strict.
13. According to the text, the bad-mannered phone users ________.
A. are rude not just in movie theater
B. show no interest in the movies at all
C. welcome the blocking equipment
D. are much worse than a few bad apples
14. In the author’s opinion, the theater rules_______.
A. are already out of date B. are proving to be unacceptable
C. can keep the theater in order D. seldom work for most people
15. What is the author’s attitude to cell phone blocking equipment in movie theaters?
A. He pays little attention to it. B. He feels doubtful about it.
C. He is uncertain of it. D. He is against it.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. D

【答案】Dear Tom,
Knowing that you are having some trouble in reading Chinese classics, I am writing to share my opinions and advice on this topic.
First and foremost, it is of great significance for a Chinese learner to read more books in the original language. By doing so, not only can you appreciate the charm of the language, but you can also broaden your views in understanding the culture and history of China. Additionally, reading Chinese novels will surely contribute to good communication and positive interaction with your Chinese classmates and friends. As for how to solve the challenges in reading Chinese classics, I do think interest comes first and choosing books suitable to your level is equally important. Don’t lose heart, with a little more patience, and you will benefit a lot from reading.
I hope what I have mentioned above can help you and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Yours,
Li Hua

One morning, my family and I woke up and went to eat breakfast——until we heard barking and scratching at the door. When my mom opened the door, we saw a puppy(小狗). We looked around to see if we saw its owner, but there was no one. We took it inside and fed it.
Regardless of how badly I wanted to keep the puppy, we decided to look for the owner. We looked all day, but we failed. We talked about whether we should keep looking or if we should look the next day. We all agreed to look for its owner the next day.
So, the next day my family and I looked for the dog's owner. It was so hard looking for its owner. We were looking for flyers(傳單)that involved the puppy, but no luck. We wouldn't have quit because it's a puppy.
“We won't stop looking,” my mom and dad said. We were going to take care of the puppy until we found its owner.
When we woke up in the morning, we went to a pet shop to buy the puppy some dog food. After that we went back home to feed the puppy the dog food that we had just bought. After we fed the puppy, we gave it a nice bath. It was so dirty that the fur was black and sticky, but after we gave it a bath, it turned white. And I noticed there was a collar (狗項圈)on him, which said “Coby”. After we gave him a bath, we went to look for the p uppy's owner, but my mom stayed at home, and it was only my dad and me this time.
We continued looking more and more until we found flyers. “We looked at it.”it said.
“Lost Dog: Please Help if Found.” Then we looked at the picture;it looked exactly like Coby. We were all happy we found a flyer that was for Cody.

【答案】One possible version:
There was a phone number on the flyer. My dad called it and someone answered; it was a lady. My dad asked whether she was the one who put out the flyers. She said “Yes!” with excitement and told us Coby, who was very dear to her, had been gone days before. Then we told her that we had her puppy and we would take him to her. She told us her address at once; then we went to it.
We found the lady’s house, and then we knocked on the door. A lady opened the door, and when she saw the puppy, she screamed with joy. We handed her the puppy, feeling proud. She wanted to give us a reward for taking care of her puppy for her, but we said it was OK because we were really happy to help. So we went home tired but content, telling my mom the whole thing. My family became friends with the lady, and we were all happy.
