Every child who grows up in a big family needs a little peace sometimes. As a little girl, Nalini Nadkarni discovered one place where she could always find it. She would climb up into the tall trees around her home. There, high in the trees, she made herself a promise. One day, she would become someone who could use her love of trees to help protect them.
As she grew, she became interested in the rainforest. Looking up into the forest trees, Nalini thought there were surely things to be learned in the treetops. She was told, however, that there was nothing important to learn high above her head. Luckily, that didn’t stop her. Instead, she used her rock climbing skills to safely reach the forest treetops. There, she discovered the whole ecosystem. It needed to be studied so scientists could get deeper understanding of the rainforest.
Dr Nadkarni also discovered the importance of canopy soil(樹冠層土壤). When mosses(蘚)and other plants that live on trees die, they slowly become canopy soil. The soil is nutrient-rich, and the whole ecosystem depends on it. Even the trees themselves take nutrients from canopy soil.
To create greater interest in forest studies, Dr Nadkarni really got creative. In the early 2000s, she bought second hand Barbie dolls and turned them into “forest Barbies”. Finally, Mattel, the company behind Barbie, used Dr Nadkarni’s idea to create dolls to make science interesting to children everywhere. Now, Dr Nadkarni can truly consider her childhood promise well kept.
4 When could Dr Nadkarni find peace as a little girl?
A. When she was in the tall trees.
B. When she was in the rainforest.
C. When she was doing researches.
D. When she was with her family.
5. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refers to?
A. The forest treetops
B. A different opinion
C. Dr Nadkarni’s bad luck
D. The dangers of climbing trees
6. Why did Dr Nadkarni use Barbie dolls?
A. To raise money for her research
B. To help Mattel reach more children
C. To make her childhood dream come true
D. To make children more interested in science
7. Which of the following is TRUE about Dr Nadkarni?
A. She is a creative scientist.
B. She can’t keep her promise.
C. She was born into a small family.
D. She loved Barbie dolls as a little girl.
A 5. B 6. D 7. A

根據(jù)第一段中“Every child who grows up in a big family needs a little peace sometimes. As a little girl, Nalini Nadkarni discovered one place where she could always find it. She would climb up into the tall trees around her home. (每個在大家庭中長大的孩子有時都需要一點安寧。當她還是個小女孩的時候,Nalini Nadkarni就發(fā)現(xiàn)了一個她總能找到安寧的地方。她會爬上她家周圍的大樹)”可知,當Nalini Nadkarni還是個小女孩的時候,她在大樹上能找到安寧,故選A。
【5題詳解】
詞句猜測題。根據(jù)第二段中“Looking up into the forest trees, Nalini thought there were surely things to be learned in the treetops. She was told, however, that there was nothing important to learn high above her head. Luckily, that didn’t stop her. Instead, she used her rock climbing skills to safely reach the forest treetops.
根據(jù)最后一段中“To create greater interest in forest studies, Dr Nadkarni really got creative. In the early 2000s, she bought second hand Barbie dolls and turned them into “forest Barbies”. Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. “I was a clothes addict.” he jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled.” Today David wears casual clothes—khaki pants and sports shirt—to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. “I’m working harder than ever,” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable.”
More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work in the United States. The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday(but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing.” said business consultant Maisly Jones.
Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work,” says the owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative (保守的) dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Straus, and Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee’s morale (士氣). Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productivity.
Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”
8. Why does David Smith wear casual clothes now?
A. They make him feel relaxed when working.
B. He cannot afford to buy expensive clothes.
C. He looks handsome in casual clothes.
D. He no longer works for any company.
9. What do we know from paragraph two?
A. Company workers started to dress down about twenty years ago.
B. Dress-down has become an everyday phenomenon since the early 1990s.
C. “Dress-down Friday” was first given as a favor from employers.
D. Many workers want to wear casual clothes to impress people.
10. According to this passage, which of the following statements is FALSE?
A. Many employees don’t like a conservative dress code.
B. Comfortable clothes make employees more productive.
C. A casual clothes code is welcomed by young employees.
D. All the employers in the US are for casual office wear.
11. What is the author’s attitude to the casual wear?
A. Subjective B. Favorable
C. Objective D. Indifferent
A 9. C 10. D 11. C

根據(jù)第一段的“He hardly ever wears a necktie. “I’m working harder than ever,” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable.”(他幾乎從不打領帶?!拔冶纫酝魏螘r候都更努力工作,”大衛(wèi)說,“我需要感覺舒適。”)”可知,大衛(wèi)·史密斯現(xiàn)在穿休閑裝是因為休閑裝使他在工作時感到放松。故選A。
根據(jù)第二段的“In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday(but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday”.(上世紀90年代初,許多公司允許員工在周五穿休閑裝(但僅限于周五)。這被稱為“便裝星期五”。)”和“What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing.(一開始只是為員工提供一周一天的額外福利,現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)變成了日常事務。)”
根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段“Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productivity.(只有4%的雇主表示,休閑裝對工作效率有負面影響。)”
根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段的“In a study conducted by Levi Straus, and Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee’s morale (士氣). Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productivity.(在李維斯公司進行的一項研究中,85%的雇主表示,他們認為休閑裝可以提高員工的士氣。只有4%的雇主表示,休閑裝對工作效率有負面影響。)”和最后一段的“Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money.(辦公室休閑裝的支持者還認為,休閑的著裝要求可以幫助他們省錢。)”

Tesla’s self-driving cars have recently come under investigation as a report on crashes raises questions about their safety. Despite Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s claim that their Autopilot capability makes their cars “ extremely safer,” data suggests otherwise.
According to The Washington Post, the number of deaths and serious injuries associated with Tesla’s driver-assistance technology is higher than previously reported. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recorded 736 crashes since 2019, with at least 17 of them being fatal. These figures include crashes involving both Autopilot, which allows cars to drive on highways without human intervention(干預), and the newer Full Self-Driving feature, which extends automation to city streets. However, these statistics can’t record incidents that were avoided due to the cars’ safety features. Additionally, when compared to the total number of car crashes that occurred last year, the number of crashes involving driver-assistance vehicles appears relatively small, but actually it’s not.
Tesla’s safety claims lack context as Autopilot is primarily designed for highways, while most accidents occur in more complex environments with cross-traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists. Moreover, Tesla’s customer base consists mainly of wealthier individuals who live in communities with lower accident rates.
Concerns are raised by Tesla’s request to the NHTSA not to reveal whether Autopilot or Full Self-Driving was in use during fatal crashes. This lack of transparency (透明) prevents a comprehensive analysis of the incidents and raises questions about responsibility.
Safety exaggerations combined with Tesla’s aggressive marketing have led to accidents caused by drivers relying too heavily on the system. Full Self-Driving does not allow the car to fully drive itself, and drivers are expected to remain attentive and ready to intervene at all times. However, Tesla’s messaging may mislead some users into believing otherwise.
While a driverless future has the potential to be safer, it is crucial not to convince the public that underdeveloped capabilities are ready for widespread use. Tesla should address past problems, ensure their automation set can detect(檢測) emergency vehicles, and be transparent with the public about the limitations of their technology.
12. What can we learn about Tesla’s driver-assistance-related crashes?
A. 736 fatal cases of self-driving are recorded.
B. NHTSA focused on the crashes on highways.
C. The total number of car crashes is extremely small.
D. The incidents avoided are not counted in the crash statistics.
13. What can be inferred about Tesla’s safety claims?
A. They are supported by comprehensive data.
B. They are based on limited driving environment.
C. They are restricted to the experiences of satisfied customers.
D. They have been proven to be accurate and reliable by NHTSA.
14. What can we know about Full Self-Driving?
A. It is ill-received. B. It is well-developed.
C. It needs the driver to stay focused. D. It reduces the accidents greatly.
15. Which title best summarizes the content of this text?
A. Concerns and Questions Surrounding Tesla’s “Self-Driving” Cars
B. Tesla’s Self-Driving Cars: The Safest Option of Driving on the Road
C. The Future of Self-Driving Cars: A Closer Look at Tesla’s Technology
D. Reconstruction and Revolution of Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving

How is everything going? I’m Lihua, president of the Student Union. I’m thrilled to inform you that your painting has been chosen to be displayed at our upcoming painting exhibition themed “Beautiful China”.
Your artwork, titled “Robust Horse”, beautifully captures not only the physical features of the animal, but also its inner spirit and strength. Besides, the horse is so vivid that we can feel the power within its burning eyes, bared teeth and kicking hooves. (It seems that the horse can gallop off the paper!)

Sam is a brave policeman who often comes across dangerous situations. However, when he was young, he experienced a funny story during his work.
That was a nice day, and Sam worked at the police station as usual. A rich and beautiful woman carrying a purse drove to work. She parked her car in the street outside her office. When she finished her work that afternoon, she got into her car quickly and started driving home as usual. Suddenly, she noticed a yellow car at her back, whose driver was a man with a very ugly look. To her surprise, when she turned left, the yellow car also turned left. When she turned right, the yellow car turned right, too. When she stopped at the traffic lights, the yellow car stopped behind her.
Gradually, fear came into her heart. What should she do? How could she get rid of this terrible man? To deal with this situation, she decided to drive quickly to the police station where Sam worked. However, she was even more surprised when she saw the car still followed her and stopped behind her. “How dare he follow me here?” she said to herself. She could feel her heart beating faster than ever. At that time, Sam was standing on duty outside the police station. Seeing Sam wearing a police uniform, she was more than delighted that she would be safe.
At once, she jumped out of her car and ran to Sam without any delay. Pointing at the man inside the car, she said a bad man was following her and asked Sam to arrest him. To find what was happening, Sam walked towards the man who had stopped his car near the woman’s.
But what shocked Sam was that the man didn’t try to escape when he saw him. Instead, the man looked relieved. Seconds later, the man walked towards the woman and Sam.

The man just smiled and started to tell the truth. Actually, the man just wanted to give the purse back to the woman. He said when the woman got into her car, she dropped the purse on the street unconsciously. The man was parking his car near the woman and saw what had happened. So he started to drive his car to chase the woman. The woman opened the purse and made sure nothing was lost. She bowed to the man, took out 100 dollars and handed it to the man. But the man had left before she knew it.
Then, Sam was lost in thought and began to talk with the woman. He told her that though not handsome, the man had a heart of gold. In addition, he taught her not to judge men by their looks. After hearing Sam’s words, the woman felt embarrassed about what she had done. Luckily, she realized her fault and felt grateful to the man. The woman promised that next time, when she saw something strange, she would not make any judgement until figuring out the truth.
