I'm a Russian. In my native country, people believe that those who always keep big smiles on their faces, if they don't have a real reason to do so, are not genuine(真誠的). For the last five years, I've lived in Kansas. What brought me to this country was my American husband, John. I work in a department store, where my coworkers show big smiles to me and pronounce my Russian name so sweetly. Every time I hear it, I feel as though my mom is embracing(擁抱)me.
Last year John encouraged me to go to see my mom back in Russia, and my manager even gave me a month of for the trip. When you live an ocean apart from your family, you need at least a month to visit them. I bought a plane ticket and packed my suitcase. Then came Covid-19. My mood became grey as I realized I couldn't go to see my mom.
A couple of weeks later, my sweet coworker Miss Donna asked me, “So what's happening with your trip to Russia?” I told her I had to cancel it and I wouldn't be able to see my mom this year.
Miss Dona didn't say anything at first. Then she put on a big smile and said, “Well, you can come to my home and see my mom!" “Oh my Lord!" I was at a loss for words. Imagine a mom for loan(借出)!I honestly don't know whether I would offer the same to someone in need of a mother's warmth, but my new people surely would do it for me.
I know that because of the virus, you shouldn't hug friends, but you can still embrace someone's heart. That's how my heart felt at that moment: hugged. So, yes, believe me, big smiles with no reason can be genuine.
4. What can we know from the first paragraph?
A. The author believes big smiles are false. B. The author works together with her husband.
C. The author seldom wears big smiles in Russia. D. The author gets along well with her coworkers.
5. Why did the author cancel her trip?
A. Because her mother's home was too far away. B. Because the manager didn't allow her to leave.
C. Because Covid-19 broke out unexpectedly. D. Because she was invited to Miss Donna's home.
6. How did the author feel when invited to Miss Donna's home?
A. She was happy. B. She was touched. C. She was confused. D. She was uncertain.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A Canceled Trip B. Imagine a Mother for Loan
C. The Outbreak of Covid-19 D. Big Smiles Embrace My Heart

C
A man enters a store to buy milk. He walks out of the store with milk. That is all—milk. At the same time, a woman enters the same grocery store also to buy milk. She buys it. But, she also buys chicken and lemons to make dinner that night. Then she remembers to buy food for her son to eat at the school. She also gets a bottle of wine for drinks with friends and a birthday card for her husband’s niece. Then she gets coffee for breakfast, ice cream for dessert and remembers stamps to mail the bills.
And that is the difference between the female and male brains. It can be simply explained in a grocery store. Generally speaking, men do one thing at a time. Women do many. Doing many things at a time is often called “multi-tasking”, a very popular word these days.
Now scientific research supports this theory about male and female brains. They found that male brains have more connections on one side of the brain, or hemisphere(腦半球). In the female brain, they found more activities and connections between the right and left sides of the brain. The left side of the brain is known as the side of “reason”. The right hemisphere is known as the “creative” side.
Regina Verma is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. She says when women are asked to do something difficult they use different parts of the brain. Men, she adds, generally use just one side of the brain. As a result, men generally deal directly with a problem. Women, however, might include other parts of the brain, like the part connected with reason and the part connected with sensitivity(理智)when solving a problem.
8. A woman with the purpose of buying milk will go to the store and buy_______.
A. nothing but milk B. more things than planned
C. a lot of things except milk D. all the things that she likes
9. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Male brains develop better than female brains.
B. It’s necessary for women to use different parts of the brain.
C. Men should use two sides of the brain to solve a problem.
D. Women may think more when finding a solution to the problem.
10. In which section of a newspaper can we find this passage?
A. Sport Report. B. Farming Report. C. Health Report. D. Education Report.
11. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Do one thing or do many a time. B. Men and women think differently.
C. The male and female interest in shopping. D. The study on the behavior of men and women.

D
Since terrorist attack in 2019 that killed 50 people in New Zealand was livestreamed on Facebook, many of the negative effects of social media have begun to be known. So far, it’s not looking good.
Not that social media is bad in nature. It does not necessarily cause mental health problems. What it is doing, however — especially in young people, a new study argues — is increasing the number of cases of young people’s depression (抑郁) and suicide (自殺).
The new study, led by psychologist Jean Twenge at San Diego State University, has researched the effects of technology and social media on the teenager brain. For this study, Twenge and her partners researched data (數(shù)據(jù)) from 2005 to 2017. They wanted to know what age groups suffered more from depression. Chance of mood disorders (紊亂), they write, “generally becomes less with age.” In this date range, depressive cases increased by 63 percent among young people aged 12 to 17, and 52 percent among young adults aged 18 to 25.
There are two tendencies that appear to be causing this problem.
According to the study, the increased use of electronic communication and digital media during this time period may have changed ways of socializing enough to affect mood disorders and suicide-related results. For example, people who spend more time on social media and less time with others face-to-face report poorer health and are more likely to be depressed.
Tied into increased screen time, which could lead to being affected by cyber-bullying, are sleep issues. Sleep duration is decreasing among all age groups, but especially young adults during a time in life when they need it the most. Lack of sleep has been linked to mood disorders, suicidal thoughts, and suicide attempts.
Using the technology for good is one step forward. But another would be to put the phone down more often. If you’ve only grown up in a world viewed through a screen, learning that other world — namely, the real one — exists might seem impossible. Therefore, some distance is feeling more necessary day by day.
12. How did the team carry out the research?
A. By studying the data. B. By studying behavior.
C. By doing experiments. D. By interviewing people.
13. Which is a possible cause of increased cases of depression among young people?
A. Too early bedtime. B. Face-to-face contact.
C. Good Internet connection. D. Frequent use of phones.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards the use of technology?
A. Doubtful. B. Careful. C. Unconcerned. D. Unknown.
15. Which section of a website is the text most likely from?
A. Culture. B. Education. C. Opinions. D. History.
A 13. D 14. B 15. C

Dear Tom,
How are you getting on? I don’t think this a good idea to travel a lot and visit as many places possible. Last July Bell pay a visit to Europe. Europe is very beautiful, but his holiday wasn’t very nicely. He visited several country, and was in each of the countries for only three days. He visited a great many of places of interest, and was always in a hurry. When he returned from Europe, he was very tiring. So I suggest you spent your holiday in a different way. You’d better travelled with a friend to one country and visit only one city, that will do good to your body and mind.
【答案】this→it/it’s
places后加as
pay→paid
nicely→nice
country→countries
刪除many后的of
tiring→tired
spent→spend
travelled→travel
that→which
此處考查think it+n/adj+to do sth認(rèn)為做某事……,其中it是形式主語,也可以看作是think之后的賓語從句,即think (that) it is a good idea to travel…其中it是從句的形式主語,故將this改為it/it’s。
此處考查短語as+adj/adv+ as possible盡可能……,故在places后加as。
此處考查a great many+可數(shù)名詞復(fù)數(shù) 很多,故刪除many后的of。
此處考查suggest that sb (should) do sth建議某人做某事,該結(jié)構(gòu)是虛擬語氣,用should加動詞原形(should可?。
His pale face suggested that he was ill.
He suggested that we leave at once.
句中suggest意為“建議”,故用虛擬語氣,即:suggest that sb should do sth.
