在英國倫敦西南100多千米的索巨石陣又稱索爾茲伯里石環(huán)、環(huán)狀列石、太陽神廟、史前石桌、斯通亨治石欄、斯托肯立石圈等名，是歐洲著名的史前時代文化神廟遺址，位于英格蘭威爾特郡索爾茲伯里平原，約建于公元前4000～2000年（2008年3月至4月，英國考古學家研究發(fā)現(xiàn)，巨石陣的比較準確的建造年代在公元前2300年左右）的索爾茲伯里平原上，一些巍峨巨石呈環(huán)形屹立在綠色的曠野間，這就是英倫三島最著名、最神秘的史前遺跡—巨石陣。公元1130年，英國的一位神父在一次外出時，偶然發(fā)現(xiàn)了巨石陣，從此這座由巨大的石頭構(gòu)成的奇特古跡，開始引起了人們的注意。巨石陣的英文名字叫做“Stnehenge”。"Stne"意為“石頭”，henge意為“圍欄”（王同億主編的《英漢辭?！罚骸癶enge，在英格蘭發(fā)現(xiàn)的青銅時代的一種圓形構(gòu)筑物（如木構(gòu)），周圍有埂和溝”）。在英國人(British)的心目中，這是一個神圣的地方。
