There are many theme parks in Florida. These amusement parks are designed for kids big and small and have plenty to offer adults, too.

It was about five in the morning in Ontario, Canada, when Donna Strickland’s phone rang. The Nobel Prize committee was on the line in Stockholm, calling to tell her she had won the prize in physics.
“I wondered if it was a joke,” Strickland said in an interview with a Nobel official after the call. She had been asleep when the call arrived. “Something was wrong because it came so early in the morning. But then I knew it was the right day, and it would have been a cruel joke.”
Strickland, an associate professor at the University of Waterloo, shares the honor with two other scientists for their work in the 1980s in transforming lasers(激光)into tiny tools that today have countless application. The prize money $1. 4 million will be shared among the three. Half the prize went to Strickland and her cooperator Gerard Mourou, a professor at the Ecole Poly technique in France. The other half was awarded to Arthur Ashkin, a retired physicist who worked at the famous Bell Labs in the United States.
Strickland’s win is historic in more than one way. It’s been over 55 years since a woman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. In 1903, Marie Curie became the first-ever woman to win a Nobel Prize in Physics. For the next 60 years, no women physicists were awarded. Maria Goeppert Mayer became the second woman physicist to win the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963.
Strickland herself was surprised to learn she was the third woman to receive the honor in physics. “Is that all, really? I thought there might have been more.” she said at a press conference Tuesday. “We need to celebrate women physicists, because we’re out there. Hopefully, in time, it will start to move forward at a faster rate.”
24. What was Donna’s first reaction after she received the call?
A. She felt all efforts paid off. B. She was too excited to say a word.
C. She was doubtful about it. D. She was annoyed at being waken up.
25. How much was Donna rewarded for winning the Nobel Prize?
A. About $350,000. B. About $2. 8 million.
C. About $700,000. D. About $1. 4 million.
26. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Strickland’s achievements in physics.
B. The history of the Nobel Prize in Physics.
C. Strickland’s struggle to win the Nobel Prize.
D. Three women winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics in history.
27. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. The Nobel Prize in Physics.
B. The achievement of men physicists.
C. The celebration of the Nobel Prize winners.
D. Awarding women physicists the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Statistics show that most toddlers(剛學(xué)走路的小孩)learn how to say about 20 words by 18 months. Talking is easy. If you ask anyone, none will remember how they started doing it, it just comes naturally.
But what might not flow as smoothly as words, is body language. It’s a whole different deal when you’re using your hands, eyes or head instead of your tongue. And what makes it even more complicated is the fact that body language differs all around the world.
I find it shockingly amazing how just a small finger gesture could mean one thing in the east and the completely opposite in the west. For instance, in Japan bowing is the most common greeting. It shows respect and Japanese pay a lot of attention to the details like the timing, posture and movement. A bow in Japan represents sincerity, respect and graciousness. While in New Zealand Maori the pressing of noses and foreheads is the traditional greeting. They call it “hongi”, which is regarded as the breath of life.
For most of us, nodding our head up and down often means agreement, but not for the Bulgarians or Greeks. In both cultures, nodding one’s head up and down actually means “no”. The American goodbye wave could actually be interpreted(領(lǐng)會) as a “no” in many parts of Europe and Latin America. And the Italian goodbye wave would be understood in America as a “come here” and the American “come here”
gesture would actually be seen as an insult(侮辱)in most of Asia.
So before you travel to explore a different culture, make sure you’re aware of alternate meanings for body language. We live in a world with many different cultures, so don’t forget how differently one hand gesture can be interpreted!
28. What makes body language misunderstood often?
A. Its wide uses. B. Its smooth flowing.
C. Its difficulties in understanding. D. The background of different cultures.
29. What does the pressing of noses and foreheads mean in New Zealand?
A. Greeting. B. Respect. C. Tradition. D. Breath.
30. In which country does nodding mean “no”?
A. America. B. Greece. C. New Zealand. D. Japan.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Origin of Body Language B. The Limitation of Culture
C. Body Language Around the World D. The Culture of Maori

“Big Ben” bell will be silenced for four long years. The keeper of the Great Clock announced the news this Monday. The 158-year-old British clock will be getting some repairs.
Londoners were not happy about the news. They thought the hourly rings of Big Ben are very important. “A silent Big Ben will be super strange,” tweeted Rob, a student who can hear the rings from his room. He called them the “sound of London.”
“It will be very sad, but it needs to be done,” said Kirsten Hurrell. The 71-year-old runs a busy newsstand facing the clock tower. “Quite honestly, we live with it and half the time we don’t hear it,” she said about the bell. “But we will miss it when we suddenly find it’s not there anymore.”
A selfie (自拍照)with the Great Clock on the top of Elizabeth Tower on the Thames River is almost required. The clock tower stands at one end of the Palace of Westminster, which holds England’s government, known as Parliament. It is also one of the most visited sites in London and Big Ben is the star.
The bell was created by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in 1859. It was the largest at the time of its first performance. In all these years, Big Ben went through good times and bad, which includes Germany’s eight-month bombing of London in World War II.
The hour bell has been silenced before, though. Big Ben cracked after its first few weeks. The striking hammer was too heavy. Workers changed a lighter hammer and Big Ben rang again three years later. Experts say the crack causes the unique but imperfect sound.
The bell was also silent during the funerals(葬禮)of Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher.
During the repair, one side of the four clock faces will remain visible. An electric motor will turn the clock hands. People in London can continue to set their watches to the clock.
The clock keeper announced the clock would not be completely silenced during the repairs and would strike the hour for important national events, for example New Year’s Eve.
32. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Big Ben is the most important site in London.
B. The famous 158-year-old clock will get repairs.
C. Big Ben went through good times and bad times.
D. Londoners were excited about the silence of the bell.
33. Why were Londoners not happy about the news?
A. It’ll cost a lot of money to repair Big Ben.
B. People will not hear the rings any longer.
C. They won’t get used to the missing of the rings.
D. The rings are the most important thing in their life.
34. Which statement describes the relationship tourists have with Big Ben?
A. Tourists visit Big Ben more than many other places.
B. Tourists plan on avoiding Big Ben when it stops ringing.
C. Tourists to London know about Big Ben but rarely visit it.
D. Tourists to London have little knowledge about Big Ben.
35. How many times has Big Ben been silenced in history, according to the text?
A. 1 B. 2 C. 3 D. 4

第二節(jié) 書面表達(dá)(滿分25分)
參考范文:
Dear Mary,
I am sorry to hear that you have been ill for days and hope you have got better now. You have studied so hard that you have had no time for exercise. This is harmful to your health. I feel it would be more beneficial to your health if you could take more exercise in future.
Do not think that time spent in exercise is wasted. Exercise can improve your physical constitution and refresh the mind. Only when you have a strong body can you keep on studying without feeling fatigue.
I am not advising you to devote all your time to exercise. What I want to say is that exercise is as useful and important as your study. I would be more than happy to see you have a stronger body.
Sincerely yours,
John

W: I’m sorry. This Wednesday is already fully booked. It’s the traveling season, you know. Would you go for next week?
M: Okay. Can I book it now?
W: Yes, of course. Now, when will you start your holiday, Monday or Wednesday?
M: Well, I’m teaching on Monday. So Wednesday, please.

W: Are you staying by yourself again this summer vacation?
M: No, I’m not. My brother and sister are staying with me right now.
W: Really? What are they doing this summer?
M: Well, my brother is on vacation now. He always wants to come and visit the city.
W: What about your sister?
M: She has a part-time job at the university.
W: And do you have anything special to do?
M: Nothing special. I work as a waiter in the morning. And in the afternoon, I read books bought from a bookstore days ago. What about you, June? Are you in school this summer?
W: Yes, I am.
M: Oh, are you taking French and Spanish again?
W: Well, I’m not taking them, but I’m starting Japanese.
M: Really? That’s exciting.

W: Well, I’m really worried about how I’m going to deal with university life. Maybe if I knew the university a bit better, that might help.
M: Do you have a map of the university?
W: Yes.
M: Well, let’s look at it together. OK, we are here now in Dalton House. Opposite this building is the
Arts Block where you will find the computers. The computer rooms are open from 9:00 am till 8:00 pm weekdays.
W: Fine.
M: Another important building is the Students’ Union. To get to the Students’ Union you keep going down University Lane, past the Science Block on your left. Opposite the Science Block are the Chemistry labs and the Students’ Union is just on the right, next to Lab B.
W: Fine. But I get a bit confused about the directions.
M: Probably the best thing to do is to walk around and familiarize yourself with everything. Now I need you to fill in this form. Take it away with you and then make an appointment to see me again and we’ll go over it. My telephone number is on the form. You can ring me anytime, except on Thursday.

Good morning, everybody. Before we start the class today, I need to give you some information about our field trip on the 27th of May. As you know, we’re spending the day at The Science Museum in London. A coach will pick us up in the school car park. We’ll leave at 8 o’clock, so plan to be there at least fifteen minutes before that,7:45 at the latest. You’d better set your alarms for 6:30,okay? If you’ve visited The Science Museum before, you’ll know that it’s enormous, and we can’t possibly see everything in one day. The Welcome Wing has three galleries. We’re going to have a guided tour of one of them. We’ve ordered lunch at the café, so we’ll all meet up there at 12:30. And don’t be late. We have to go to the cinema at 1:15. I think that’s all for now. Oh, one last thing. Check out The Science Museum website before we go. The more you read about it, the more interesting the visit will be.
