A couple had a son eleven years after they married. They were a loving couple and the boy was the apple of their eye. When the boy was around four years old, one day the father was very tired after work, so he asked his wife to pick up their son. The mother, who was very busy in the kitchen, totally forgot about it.
Later the boy lost his way on the street. When the son was found missing, the mother hurried to look for him, but she didn’t find him. The mother felt very sad and didn’t know how to face her husband.
When the father went to the police station after hearing that his son was missing, he looked at his wife and said just four words. What do you think the four words were? The husband just said “I love you, darling.”
The son was missing. If she had picked him up earlier, this would not have happened. There is no point in blaming anyone. His wife had also lost her only child. What his wife needed at that moment was comfort and understanding from her husband. That is what the husband gave his wife. Several weeks later, with the help of the police, the couple finally found their lost son. The family’s relationship became stronger over that time.
Sometimes we spend lots of time asking who is to blame. We miss many chances to give each other support and let each other feel the warmth of human relationships. Get rid of all your unwillingness to forgive, selfishness and fears, and you will find the world is much more wonderful.

Can you imagine a world without insects? Without ants or flies in your house, it might sound great. However, the results may be out of imagination.
The number of insects has dropped by half in the past few years, according to a British biologist Dave Coulson. You may think small insects are not important. But in fact they are the main part of the species on Earth.
Insects are really on the way to extinction, according to the first review of insect population. The researchers say the main reason for this is the use of pesticides (殺蟲劑) because they destroy insects’ living areas. Also, weather change is another important cause.
“Unless we change our ways of producing food, insects will go down the way to extinction in a few years,” the researchers wrote in the review. “This will have huge, influences on the planet’s ecosystem (生態(tài)系統(tǒng)).”
We need insects to pollinate (授粉) crops. They also break down dead plants and animals, which can keep the soil healthy. Without insects, many animals would have nothing to eat and die of hunger. Then, the ecosystem would be off balance.
“If the number of insect species keep dropping, this will have bad influences on both Earth’s ecosystem and the living of us humans,” said one of the writers of the review.
“The first step to stop this is to let more people understand the values of the natural world,” he suggests. “The best place to start is from our children, who should realize environmental protection from an early age.”
8.Why has the number of insects dropped in the past few years?
A.Because people use lots of pesticides.
B.Because the land becomes less and less.
C.Because they break down dead plants and animals.
D.Because people catch and sell many insects every year.
9.What does the underlined word “extinction” mean in Chinese?
A.保護(hù) B.傷害 C.損傷 D.滅絕
10.What does the last paragraph tell us?
A.Choose the best place for insects.
B.Keep the values of the natural plant.
C.Protect the environment from children.
D.Feed more insects in some good places.
11.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A.weather change has little influence on insects
B.humans’ actions influence the number of insects
C.insects may destroy the balance of the ecosystem
D.a(chǎn)nts and flies are the main part of the species on Earth

In Britain, Australia, Canada and a few other English-speaking countries, people don’t stop celebrating when Christmas Day is over. They also celebrate the following day, known as Boxing Day. It is a popular day for giving additional (另外的) gifts. The Boxing Day has been celebrated for so long. 12
Some people believe Boxing Day began in the Middle Ages. In those days, in some special places there were special collection boxes where people threw money for the poor. The day after Christmas, the boxes were opened and the money was counted. 13
Others believe Boxing Day started about 300 years ago when some rich people had Christmas feasts (盛宴). 14 Because many servants (仆人) were needed to make and serve the food, they could not celebrate Christmas with their families. To thank them, the rich people would put food into boxes for their servants to take home.
15 Some people spend the day boxing up old or unwanted things and donating them to the poor. Many people are active in helping service organizations like the Red Cross.

We all need purpose in our lives. And so do dogs. Work is good for us. While holidays are great, after a while, we can miss our sense of routine, of duty and purpose. This is what happened to the German Shepherd, Dorka. She was a bomb-detection (探測炸彈的) dog with the US Army in Afghanistan. Every day, with her owner Monte, she would look for bombs to protect the soldiers.
When the dog and her owner’s duties were over, Monte brought Dorka home with him. But he soon found that Dorka was sad. She missed her job and the sense of purpose it gave her. Her owner tried different ways to cheer her up but they didn’t work. Then he had an idea.
He began hiding objects for Dorka to find. The objects had a similar smell to what Dorka had been trained to look for. He’d hide them under parked cars or other hidden places. On their walks, it would be Dorka’s job to find these hidden objects. Soon, Monte noticed Dorka’s ears stand up and that her youthful energy had returned.
“I immediately saw she was back to her happy self,” said Monte in a video he made for their TikTok channel, shared by the animal lovers’ site, The Douyin. “Seeing her happy makes me happy,” said Monte in the video.
But why did this make Dorka so happy? It seems that she once again felt her purpose in life. Dorka had kept Monte safe in the war, and now Monte was looking after Dorka. What a beautiful friendship Monte and Dorka share!

44.例文
My junior high school life is coming to an end. I have a lot of sweet memories. I’d like to share with you my favourite story about a basketball game. Our team did well at first by beating two strong teams. However, our captain hurt his finger during the third game. We were all down and did badly on the next match. Our coach found this and encouraged us to fight on and cheered us up. He told us we should fight together and never give up until the last second. We finally succeeded in the following games. I would never forget it because I understood the importance of teamwork and of never giving up.
