Climate change has made a great danger to bird habitats (homes of birds). Take Poyang Lake as an example. As an important habitat for the seriously endangered Siberian crane (白鶴), Poyang Lake has experienced unusual rises and falls in recent years.
“In some years, the lake experiences floods (洪水), while in others it experiences a shortage of rainfall. Both of these situations lead to less food in the cranes’ habitat,” Qian Fawen, a leader from the National Bird Center of China told China Daily.
To solve such habitat problems, China has recently named 1,140 places as important living and wintering places, and most of them are located in wetlands. To protect China’s wetlands, a law was also made in 2022 to control human activities at important national wetlands and stop harmful activities. According to the law, people can’t overuse the land or farm too much. What’s more, they can’t pour waste water into the wetlands.
Since these methods have worked well, more birds have been seen wintering in the nation’s wetlands, including some new species (物種). In February, Hunan Province reported that 72 species of waterbirds had spent the past winter at Dongting Lake, including Eurasian cranes (歐亞鶴) which haven’t appeared in the area for five years. The number of spoonbills (篦鷺), another endangered species has increased from 300 in the 1980s to more than 5,000 at present, according to the report of the government. All of these cases show a hopeful future.
19.What is the influence of climate change on Poyang Lake?
A.Poyang Lake has become warmer and warmer.
B.Poyang Lake has experienced many rises and falls.
C.Poyang Lake has been a great place for Siberian cranes.
20.What does the underlined word “shortage” mean in Chinese?
A.缺少 B.充足 C.跌落
21.How does Chinese government protect wetlands?
A.By naming 1,140 places as important homes.
B.By making a law to ask people to protect wetlands.
C.By giving a report in China Daily to call on people.
22.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.There are very rich foods for birds in Dongting Lake.
B.The future of the endangered animals becomes hopeful.
C.Dongting Lake’s environment is better than Poyang Lake’s.

Every spring, the Spanish city of Seville becomes one of the Europe’s largest orange yards. There are about 50,000 orange trees on its streets and squares. Therefore, they have become a tourist place in the city. However, these oranges also bring a lot of trouble to people’s lives.
People eat a few of them. In fact, the fruit usually gets in people’s way. Those fallen oranges make the streets dirty with juice. The government has to hire (雇傭) people to collect them. In the past, a small number of oranges were made into juice. They were also used to make wine. Most of them, however, ended up as rubbish. Now, this is about to change.
The government has tried to make full use of these oranges to produce electricity. Machines press the fruit and store the gas that is produced by the juice. The gas will then be used to produce electricity.
“It’s not just about saving money,” said Benigno Lopez, the head of the government. “The oranges are problems for the city and we’re creating added value from waste.”
The project starts with 35 tons of oranges. Each ton of the fruit can produce 50 KWH of electrical power, which is enough to meet the needs of five homes per day. On its first successful try, it can provide power for 150 homes in total. There would not be enough fruit to provide electricity for the whole city, but if all of Seville’s oranges were used, they would create enough electricity to power 73,000 homes.
Seville, a Spanish city, attracts tourists with its oranges every spring. However, these oranges also bring much 29 to people’s lives and make the streets dirty with juice. People are asked to 30 them from the ground. It is time to change the situation where most of the oranges turn into rubbish.
The government has tried to 31 these oranges to produce electricity. The oranges are pressed by machines and the gas is stored from the juice, which can be used to produce electricity. The head of the government said they are creating 32 things from waste. And it can provide power for 150 homes 33 on the first try. Without doubt, more and more oranges will be used to create electricity to power the city.
