To the Editor:
As the owner of a local restaurant, I try to stay on good terms with the members of the community. both young and old. I encourage local people to spend time in downtown areas, and I also encourage young people to exercise as much as they can. I lowever. having young people riding skateboards up and down our sidewalks, knocking over pedestrians (行人) , and generally being a real trouble, is not exactly what I had in mind.
Right now, young people are skating on the sidewalks and in the parking lots after school and on weekends. but school will soon be out. What will happen then? I think we all know the answer. Kids will be riding up and down the streets all day long and into the evening during the summer vacation.
Most of the skateboarding kids are polite and careful. They try not to bother people walking on the sidewalks, and they stay out of the traffic. But they are still kids, and there will be very many of them on the street as soon as school lets out. There are always a few troublemakers, too. and they will cause problems.
I would like to suggest that we avoid the whole situation by doing something about it now. I think the best way would be to build a skate park in the downtown area where kids can skate as much as they want. Such a park would provide a place for the kids to go and would help prevent accidents on the sidewalks and in the streets. I also think this can be done inexpensively. A skate park does not require a lot of resources, and I think many parents would contribute time and money to the project. Martin LaPierre

Rick has cerebral palsy(大腦癱瘓) . At his birth the doctors told his father, Dick Hoyt that he would never develop properly. There was no hope, they said, of him being anything more than a"vcgetable".
Even though Rick couldn't speak or walk, the Hoyts decided to raise him like his brothers at home. They believed that he was as intelligent as them. They took him camping, cross-country skiing and swimming at the beach.
At the age of 13, Rick finally was admitted to a public school. A special computer was designed to allow him to communicate.By tapping a switch with the side of his head, Rick Was able to select letters to form words and sentences. Rick graduated from high school and from Boston University and now lives in his own apartment with personal care nurses.
It was during middle school that he told his father he would like to join in a five-mile benefit run for a local player who had been paralyzed (fij ) in an accident. He wanted to let the player know that life went on even though he was paralyzed. Dick was not a runner, but he agreed to push Rick through the race course in his wheelchair. During the run, Rick felt as though he wasn't disabled any more-he was simply one of the runners.
"When we got home that night, Rick wrote on his computer, `Dad, when I'm running, it feels like my disability disappears'. which was a very powerful message to me," said Dick.

Imagine your dog starts barking and hides under a table right before an earthquake. Is your dog psychic? The idea that animals can predict earthquakes and other natural disasters isn't new at all. Scientists have been exploring this topic for years, trying to find out whether animals have a sixth sense that allows them to predict natural disasters.
An example of strange animal behavior before a disaster was the 2004 tsunami (海嘯 ) in India and Sri Lanka. It was reported that dogs refused to go on their usual morning walks on the beach, elephants ran for higher ground, and flamingos fled their usual low-lying breeding areas. Sri Lanka's Yala National Park(SLYNP), a wildlife reserve(保護區(qū)) with hundreds of wild animals, reported no large number of animal deaths after the tsunami.
Back in the Western Hemisphere, scientists at Mote Marine Laboratory of Sarasota, Florida, used technology to track movements of sharks and discovered that these sharks escaped to deeper waters about a day before the 2004 Hurricane Charley arrived.
So what does science have to say about the possibility of animals having psychic powers or their ability to predict disasters? Many scientists have doubt about it. And U. S. Geological Survey has made a clear statement that changes in animal behavior cannot be used to predict earthquakes. However, many scientists do agree that animals can hear and feel things that humans can't.
According to one study in the International Journal of Public Environmental Research and Public Health, animals may sense chemical changes in groundwater that take place when an earthquake is about to strike. Researchers examined these chemical changes after seeing a group of toads(蟾蜍) leave their pond five days before an earthquake struck Italy in 2009. Some suggest that because a dog's senses of smell are 10,000 to 100,000 times stronger than humans', this may allow them to smell a change in the air before storms and other disasters.Other theories state that animals feel the earth shake before humans and may be able to "hear" infrasound-very low-frequency continuous noise that is created by natural occurrences like earthquakes and volcanoes.
The idea that animals might have a sixth sense remains a mystery to this day. While we 're not quite ready to hand it over to animals to let us know when natural disasters will strike. these creatures do seem to know a thing or two about being prepared.

A Different Way to Wake up
When Matty Sallin, 34, was working on a degree in art and technology at New York University,he got an interesting assignment in electronics class: Create something for the household. He decided to create an alarm clock.
"Everybody has to deal with these every day, and they are extremely unpleasant!" he says. He asked different people what they'd like to wake up with instead of a noisy alarm. A lot of them said. "The smell of bacon (培根) . "
So Sallin and two classmates invented a new kind of alarm clock:a wooden box with a pig face and a digital clock that uses the smell of cooking bacon rather than sound to wake someone up.He explains," There's no danger of burning, because I built it carefully. It uses halogen light bulbs(鹵素燈泡) instead of a flame for cooking and turns off automatically after ten minutes. " Just a few easy steps are required to set the "alarm".
"What you do first is put a couple of frozen bacon strips in the night before,"says Sallin. "And if you set the alarm for 8:00,it will turn on at 7: 50 and slow cook for ten minutes under the halogen bulbs," he says. Then the bulbs turn off and a fan blows the smell of bacon out through the nostrils(鼻孔) of the pig.
"So instead of an alarm or a beep or a radio, you smell yourself awake." says Sallin, "Then you can open the door on the side and Pull the bacon out and eat it. "
When Sallin was a kid, he spent a lot of time making drawings of inventions.I wanted to make an elevator in my backyard and a special tree house." he says. "But I never really thought I'd he called an inventor!"
Sallin got an A in the class and went on to other things-hut people continue to hear about his invention and email him every day asking where they can buy his alarm clock.
These days he is designing computer software, but if he decides to produce and sell his aroma(香味) alarm, maybe he Can develop some other models.
