The Best National Parks to Visit in Winter
While most parks tend to draw families in the summer and fall, there are also ideal spots for adventurous winter trips.
Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
The country’s oldest and best-known national park takes on an almost otherworldly atmosphere in winter: the air filled with rolling steam, the strong colors of hot springs, the surrounding white landscapes, let alone the impressive wildlife during this time, like bison, wolves, and playful red foxes. Just book a guided hiking tour to get a ranger’s perspective on the park and local people.
Joshua Tree National Park, California
With its giant red rocks and unique trees, you’ll feel like stepping onto a foreign planet as you spend hours hiking the Panorama Loop or Maze Loop. The park is recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, featuring virtually zero light pollution and the country’s best views of a starry sky.
Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
A significantly lower number of visitors in winter means you can take in unblocked views of the South Rim, and get to see the rare beauty of the Grand Canyon dusted with snow. For those adventurous and daring, it is recommended to hike the Bright Angel Trail and take the chance to see the canyon’s wintertime wildlife, including mule deer, elk, and bald eagles.
Virgin Islands National Park, St. John
Surprise! Not all wintertime national park trips need to involve snow. Virgin Islands National Park is most famous for its white-sand beaches. You can also hike inland to visit old sugar plantations, or venture out to the water to swim along with sea turtles and manta rays. You will definitely enjoy a different winter here.
1.Which park will one choose if he/she is interested in stars?
A.Yellowstone National Park. B.Joshua Tree National Park.

2.What do we know about the Grand Canyon National Park?
A.We can have a poor view of the South Rim there. B.It lies in an area with rolling steam and hot springs.
C.There is a slight decline in visitor numbers in winter. D.The Bright Angel Trail is challenging in cold weather.
3.Which activity is mentioned in all of the parks?

A mild-mannered cat by day, at night Rusty was just the opposite. Often, Bill and I would lie in bed quarreling over whether we should let it out to wander in the dark or put up with another sleepless night.
So, instead, we lay in the dark each noisy night and wondered what damage Rusty would do. And always in the morning, if I had forgotten to put the butter in the cupboard, there were marks from a rough, little tongue and once even a paw print.
Something had to give. Bill looked at me straight in the eyes, “Do it.” My reservations were such, however, that it took me several weeks and the loss of nearly a pound of butter to decide we didn’t have much choice.
That night, I put Rusty on his cat bed and patted him a little guiltily on the head. Then I began filling the kitchen sink with about two inches of water. Rusty loved jumping into a damp sink and then tracking water all over the cupboards and across the kitchen floor. According to the article I saved from a website to my folder, cats used to jumping into your sink, but they won’t do it again if they jump in and find a couple of inches of water.
Next, I cleared the cupboards of everything. Then I got out all my metal cookie sheets and a fork to go with each. According to the article, you should support a cookie sheet with a fork. When your cat jumps on the counter, he will knock down the insecurely balanced cookie sheets. What happens next will stop him from doing it a second time.
Everything in place, I slipped onto our bed quietly, waiting. Suddenly, there came an awfully loud noise of metal. A chain reaction of crashes next. Finally, Rusty rounded the corner in the hall heavily and leaped through our doorway onto the foot of our bed, trembling under our cover. And that was the night Rusty, the Midnight Troublemaker, retired.
4.Which of the following best describes Rusty at night?
A.Cold-blooded. B.Adorable. C.Good-tempered. D.Troublesome.
5.What did Bill mean by saying “Do it”?
A.To leave the cat outdoor. B.To give the cat a lesson.
C.To reserve food for the cat. D.To give the cat more butter.
6.What did the writer do before she went to bed that night?
A.Filled the sink with water. B.Laid two traps for the cat.
C.Covered the counter with sheets. D.Cleaned the kitchen thoroughly.
7.How did the author probably feel about the outcome of her effort?
A.Satisfied. B.Disappointed. C.Anxious. D.Regretful.

Are you relatively skinny but growing a “beer belly”?
Then don’t be surprised at your next checkup if the nurse measures your waistline to determine your healthy weight. That’s because research is showing that a protruding (鼓出的) belly may be a sign of VAT — a dangerous form of fat around organs deep inside your body. “Studies confirm that visceral (內(nèi)臟的) fat is a clear health risk,” said Dr. Tiffany Wiley, a senior expert at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Unlike the fat just under your skin, visceral fat raises your risk for heart disease. Experts think that’s because visceral fat raises blood pressure and inflames (使發(fā)炎) tissues and organs.
However, you can’t assume you’re safe from visceral fat if your overall weight is healthy, experts stress. That’s because you can have dangerous visceral fat even if you’re not considered overweight — and not have any visceral fat even if you are overweight.
How do you know if your stomach is protruding into dangerous size? Do a check. Non-pregnant women with a waist size greater than 88 cm and men with a waist larger than 102 cm, are at higher risk according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If you’re Asian, it drops to 80 cm for women and 90 cm for men. But it is only a rough measure. “The only sure way to know is to check your visceral fat levels on a CT scan or MRI,” say experts.
According to the AHA committee, the most salutary physical activity to “shrink” belly is aerobic exercise. Aerobic means “with oxygen”, so aerobic exercise increases your breathing rate and promotes the circulation of oxygen through the blood. This type of exercise makes the heart work more effectively and improves its ability to move oxygen-carrying blood with every beat. Speed walking, jogging, stair climbing, cycling and swimming are all examples of aerobic exercise.
“However, more studies are needed to determine the best physical activity, food and other lifestyle changes which can help reduce heart disease risk,” Dr. Tiffany Wiley added.
8.What would a “beer belly” cause?
A.Enlarged organs inside the body. B.Higher risk of heart disease.
C.Raised mental pressure. D.Aching stomach.
9.Who would be relatively healthier according to the experts?
A.A white man with a waist size of 120 cm.
B.A white woman with a waist size of 90 cm.
C.An Asian man with a waist size of 102 cm.
D.An Asian woman with a waist size of 75 cm.
10.Which word can replace the underlined word “salutary” in paragraph 5?
A.Beneficial. B.Difficult. C.Enthusiastic. D.Useless.
11.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.Doing aerobic exercise can remove visceral fat completely.
B.Heart ability improves when one does speed walking.
C.Further studies are needed to reduce heart disease risk.
D.Food and life style determine one’s body shape.

At one time, the inheritance of traditional drama was difficult. People of insight screamed “save drama”. Many celebrities and big names put down their figures and went to the community to carry out public welfare performances of opera, and did everything possible to expand the coverage of drama. In a word, short video platforms are becoming an important channel to display China’s intangible cultural heritage.
Short video platforms, offering a fun, popular and easy way to explore the traditional art forms, are receiving a lot of positive feedbacks from China’s young generations.
When we feel exhausted, our brains want to save mental energy by directing our focus to the most readily available information to help us make decisions quickly. Therefore, we often do the thing that feels right, or rush to judgment without proper consideration. 16 It’s the reason why if you speak Spanish, it’s much easier to learn Italian than Japanese.
17 Or, we are willing to move toward things that make us feel good and away from things that make us feel uncomfortable.
Yet, we know hard actions can bring benefits — ones that may not be visible for some time. 18 Maybe we do this because we have a requirement from doctor. When we go for that initial run, it doesn’t feel good. Neither does the run after that. Our muscles hurt. The money we’ve spent on the new hobby causes friction in our household. It continues to signal the reasons we should go back to the way it was before.
So, how do we do hard things when our brains are constantly telling us to avoid effort?
? 19 A 2016 study found that when people are upset, they’re less likely to try to do hard things. When they’re feeling upbeat, they’re more likely to take on the hard-but-essential tasks that ultimately make life better.
? Give our brains the right amount of autonomy. When we have choices, our brains often want something easy. 20
Doing things that feel uncomfortable and liking hard work can seem counterintuitive (反直覺(jué)的). But by understanding what’s going on in your brain, instead of depending on your first feeling, you can work toward completing hard things and manage your fears better.
A.Think about starting a new exercise routine.
B.Try hard things when we’re in a good mood.
C.Accomplish hard things by having the supports of others.
D.The result is that many of us tend to do what simply feels right.
E.The brain does this because it’s much easier to process existing ideas than new ones.
F.But there are still some people seeking challenges regardless of these difficulties.
G.But we can reduce that response by providing ourselves with limited choices.

故將an改為a。
故將him改為them。
根據(jù)句意,“praised me”和“asked her son to learn from me”之間是并列關(guān)系,應(yīng)用并列連詞and。故將but改為and。
皁f+名詞”相當(dāng)于形容詞,of great value=valuable。故將in改為of。
分析句子結(jié)構(gòu),if引導(dǎo)了一個(gè)條件狀語(yǔ)從句,從句中的主語(yǔ)為our personality,謂語(yǔ)為needs,而that是多余的。
