One day, I was sitting in a local coffee shop, and staring at this man in a wheelchair. He could move his head and parts of his fingers but nothing else. He had a servant who cut up his food and placed it on a special mechanically powered fork that he would use to eat.
He saw me staring at him and invited me to join him at his table. His name was Stephen. For several hours we sat at that table and we got to know each other on a deeply personal level. I had never known a man who was more radiant(容光煥發(fā)), more energizing to talk and get to know than Stephen.
Stephen used to be a very successful businessman in Denver. He was in the natural gas business. Thirteen years before, when he was forty, he was waiting for news of a natural gas discovery to occur any moment.
He said, “I had so much nervous energy. I saw the storm clouds gathering, and I decided to clean out the gutters(屋檐排水溝) rather than sitting around waiting for this gas well to come in.”
He climbed up the ladder to clear the piles of pine needles(松針) on the roof. As he backed up, he accidentally fell off the roof. He landed on his back. He was paralyzed(癱瘓) for the rest of his life, except for his head and his hand.
I asked him, “How do you do it all? How do you suddenly stop hiking, fishing, and running marathons?”
He said, “There are three things you have to do when something like this happens. The first thing you have to do is adjust. The second thing you do is adjust. And the third thing you do is adjust.”
He said, “By adjusting to your abilities, Bill, you have to change your self-expectations. If you can’t be a physical athlete any longer, then perhaps you can be a spiritual athlete.” He was.
4. Why was the author staring at Stephen at the coffee shop?
A. Stephen took food specially.
B. Stephen greeted him with a smile.
C. They knew each other before.
D Stephen’s servant made a noise.
5. What made Stephen decide to clean out the gutters?
A. The news calling on him to do that.
B. His great care about his money.
C. His eagerness for the gas discovery.
D. His concern about the bad weather.
6. How did Stephen adjust to his disability?
A. He turned to the author for help. B. He accepted himself as he was.
C. He talked to himself regularly. D. He gave up being an athlete.
7. “A spiritual athlete” Stephen mentioned in the last paragraph might be ________.
A. humorous and energetic B. confident and caring
C. optimistic and open-minded D. faithful and easygoing
A 5. C 6. B 7. C

根據(jù)最后一段中“By adjusting to your abilities, Bill, you have to change your self-expectations. If you can’t be a physical athlete any longer, then perhaps you can be a spiritual athletes.(比爾,為了適應你的能力,你必須改變你的自我期望。如果你不能再做一個身體上的運動員,那么也許你可以做一個精神上的運動員。) ”可推斷,Stephen接受自己殘疾這個事實來適應自己是殘疾人。故選B。

What can a person over 80 do? A group of 33 Japanese grannies can answer this question. The singing and dancing grannies set up a band called KBG84 in 2015. The average age of the members is 84, its oldest member is 97 years old!
The new band, based on the remote island of Kohama in Okinawa, went viral in the country so much so that the members are rather shocked by their success. Their first single, titled Come on and Dance, Kohama Island, has made it to the top of the charts, and they’ve just completed a sell-out tour of Japan.
“We felt like stars in Tokyo,” added 86-year-old Hideko Kedamori. “Everyone in the audience had a big smile, which gave us the energy to sing our hearts out. We’re lucky to have been born in beautiful Kohama. Our songs are about the island and nature—whales in the sea spouting(噴出水柱) or dolphins doing somersaults(空翻). ”
Regardless of the songs, these elderly women are very charming when they perform. Their energy and enthusiasm are amazing, in view of their age. In fact, no one under the age of 80 is allowed into the band. It turns out that the pop queens are blessed with incredible genes—Okinawan islanders have one of the highest life expectancies in the world. Their diet chiefly consists of vegetables and local purple-fleshed sweet potatoes, with practically no added sugar. Menaka said she isn’t particular about her diet.
“I look after my health by cleaning my home, wiping the floors, cooking rice,” she said. “I stay in the shade when it’s too hot. I don’t want to get burnt. I have to take care of my skin—I’m still young at heart! ”
8. What does the underlined words “went viral” mean in paragraph 2?
A. suffer a great loss. B. make much progress.
C. take a huge risk. D. gain great popularity.
9. Which of the following best describes KBG84’s feeling when they succeeded?
A. cheerful. B. surprised.
C. crazy. D. satisfied.
10. What are KBG84’s songs mainly about?
A. Audience’s encouraging smile. B. Lovely animals on the land.
C. Their deep love for the nature. D. Inspiring times in their life.
11. What can we know from what Menaka said in the last paragraph?
A. She has a high life expectation.
B. Doing housework is challenging for her.
C. She prefers a hot weather to a cold one.
D. Having good skin is what she is proud of.
D 9. B 10. C 11. A

根據(jù)劃線詞后半句“so that the members are rather shocked by their success.(以至于成員們都對他們的成功感到相當震驚。)”
根據(jù)第二段“The new band, based on the remote island of Kohama in Okinawa, went viral in the country so much so that the members are rather shocked by their success. (這支新樂隊以沖繩偏遠的小濱島為基地,在全國走紅,以至于成員們都對他們的成功感到相當震驚。)”可知,KBG84的成員對于她們的成功感到驚訝。故選B。
【10題詳解】
推理判斷題。根據(jù)第三段“We’re lucky to have been born in beautiful Kohama. Our songs are about the island and nature—whales in the sea spouting(噴出水柱) or dolphins doing somersaults(空翻). ”(我們很幸運出生在美麗的科哈馬。我們的歌是關于島嶼和大自然的——海里的鯨魚噴出水柱,海豚在做空翻。)”可推斷,KBG84的歌曲主要講的是她們對自然的熱愛。故選C。
【11題詳解】

Twenty-five years ago, most young Britons wanted a career in law, to be a doctor, or, if they were creative enough, to take up singing. But today, things stand different.
According to a survey by Tesco Mobile, a UK company, the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger, or “vlogger”. The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as many as 40 percent of them put vloggers as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers.
This change is undoubtedly as a result of the Internet and social media. They have made it so much easier to reach the audience of the world, without having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.
In the past, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood studios; now, anyone with a computer camera can become a star. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people interacting(交流) with their fans about everyday life.
However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they fail to notice the fact that only those who are successful earn fame(名聲) and fortunes. For every success there are hundreds of others who never get off the starting line. There are the dreams that come true and the dreams that remain dreams forever.
Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose to follow careers that don’t necessarily earn them fame, but that allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. It’s an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. His job allows him to express his enthusiasm, and is always a learning experience. And that’s enough for him.
12. Why do more and more young Britons choose to be vloggers?
A. Traditional jobs are not creative enough.
B. The Internet make it easier to be a show star.
C. They are eager to communicate with others.
D. The Hollywood studios develop too slowly.
13. What can we infer from the fifth paragraph?
A. Being a vlogger is not a good career. B. A vlogger cannot earn fame or fortunes.
C. Not all vloggers can be successful. D. Dreams will come true one day.
14. Why does Israeli David Leshaw run the Finishers Club?
A. To be a popular star. B. To earn a lot of money.
C. To meet more friends. D. To share his hobby.
15. Which of the following is suitable title for the text?
A. Great influence of Internet on young Britons’ career choice.
B. Social media’s great impact on young people’s daily life.
C. To be vloggers, to be rich and respected.
D. To be a vlogger, or not to be-that is a question.
B 13. C 14. D 15. A
根據(jù)第三段“They have made it so much easier to reach the audience of the world, without having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.(他們使它更容易接觸到全世界的觀眾,而不必以傳統(tǒng)的方式進入演藝圈。)”第四段“In the past, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood studios; now, anyone with a computer camera can become a star. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people interacting(交流) with their fans about everyday life.(在過去,最大牌的明星都是由好萊塢制片廠培養(yǎng)出來的;現(xiàn)在,任何人只要有一臺電腦相機就可以成為明星。視頻博主是當今的大明星,因為他們是普通人,與粉絲交流日常生活。)”可知,越來越多的英國年輕人選擇成為視頻博主,是因為互聯(lián)網(wǎng)讓做明星變得更容易。故選B。
【13題詳解】
推理判斷題。根據(jù)第五段“For every success there are hundreds of others who never get off the starting line. There are the dreams that come true and the dreams that remain dreams forever.(每一次成功的背后,都有成百上千的人從未從起跑線上走下來。有些夢想會成真,有些夢想永遠只是夢想。)”可推斷,不是所有的視頻博主都能成功。故選C。
【14題詳解】
推理判斷題。根據(jù)第最后一段“Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose to follow careers that don’t necessarily earn them fame, but that allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. It’s an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. His job allows him to express his enthusiasm, and is always a learning experience. And that’s enough for him.
根據(jù)第二段“The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as many as 40 percent of them put vloggers as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers.(這項對1002人進行的調(diào)查發(fā)現(xiàn),多達40%的人將視頻博主列為理想職業(yè)的第一選擇。)”、第三段“This change is undoubtedly as a result of the Internet and social media.(這種變化無疑是互聯(lián)網(wǎng)和社交媒體的結果。)” 所以“Great influence of Internet on young Britons’ career choice.(互聯(lián)網(wǎng)對英國年輕人的職業(yè)選擇影響很大。)” 故選A。
Do you love yourself? You may think you do, but do you really? There’s only one way to find out — by taking a close look at what you think, say, and do. You may not like some of what you find, but if you are serious about really loving yourself, you can use this insight to do some positive inner work. ____16____:
Listen Closely to Your Thoughts
Your thoughts will determine your actions. ____17____It is not necessary for you to write in it every day, but it helps to record various insights you gain as you go about your life. Instead of using a big notebook, you might use a small notepad that you can keep in your pocket for easy access to record your thoughts as they occur to you. Whichever method you choose, what’s most important is that you write your thoughts down. It will help you know what’s in your heart.
____18____
To do this, you should pay attention to your actions. Actions speak louder than words, and they always tell the truth. If you say you love your job, but your actions say otherwise, which do you think is more reliable? On the other hand, if you say you’re not good at a certain job, but your actions say otherwise, that’s also important. What do you do with this insight? You can use it to make more positive choices in your life. By being honest with yourself, you will act according to truth instead of just what you tell yourself.
Take Quiet Time to Listen to Your Inner Voice
This is similar to the first point, but it takes a step further—beyond the natural mind to the heart that cannot be seen. You may want to use your quiet time to think deeply. However you use this time, ____19____Breathing deeply during quiet time will also help you focus. I know it’s hard to find quiet time during a particularly busy day, but it’s so important—even if it’s just 10 minutes a day and you have to hide somewhere to get it. Quiet time can really make a difference in your life.
Despite what your mind may be telling you, you can have love with no limits.____20____
A. One thing helping you to listen to your thoughts is keeping a journal.
B. the time shouldn’t be too long.
C. the key is to shut out all of the noise around you by focusing deep within yourself.
D. Here are three ways for gaining greater personal insight for deeper love
E. The key is to unconditionally love yourself first.
F. Be Honest with Yourself
G. it is difficult to keep relationships with people around you.
D 17. A 18. F 19. C 20. E
根據(jù)上文“You may not like some of what you find, but if you are serious about really loving yourself, you can use this insight to do some positive inner work.(你可能不喜歡你發(fā)現(xiàn)的一些東西,但如果你真的想真正愛自己,你可以用這種洞察力來做一些積極的內(nèi)在工作)”可知,如果你對于愛自己是認真的,可以用這種洞悉內(nèi)心來做一些積極的內(nèi)在工作,下文講述了三種具體的方法,故D項“這里有三種為更深層次的愛而獲得更好的自我洞悉的方法”承上啟下,符合語境。故選D項。
根據(jù)本段主題句“Listen Closely to Your Thoughts(仔細傾聽你的想法)”可知,本段主要講述仔細傾聽自己的想法,結合下文“It is not necessary for you to write in it every day, but it helps to record various insights you gain as you go about your life.(你沒有必要每天都寫,但它有助于記錄你在生活中獲得的各種見解)”可知,空處應是提供傾聽內(nèi)心想法的方法——記錄自己的想法,A項“幫助你傾聽自己想法的一件事就是寫日記”符合語境。故選A項。
本題是段落主題句,根據(jù)本段內(nèi)容“By being honest with yourself, you will act according to truth instead of just what you tell yourself.(對自己誠實,你就會按照事實行事,而不是你告訴自己什么)”可知,本段主要說要對自己誠實,F(xiàn)項“對自己誠實”符合語境。故選F項。
根據(jù)下文“Breathing deeply during quiet time will also help you focus. I know it’s hard to find quiet time during a particularly busy day, but it’s so important(安靜的時候深呼吸也能幫助你集中注意力。我知道在特別忙碌的日子里很難找到安靜的時間,但這很重要)”可知,此處是說無論你如何使用這個時間,要找一個安靜的時間集中精力去傾聽內(nèi)心的聲音,C項“關鍵是通過關注自己的內(nèi)心深處,把周圍所有的噪音都排除在外”符合語境。故選C項。
【20題詳解】
根據(jù)上文“Despite what your mind may be telling you, you can have love with no limits.(不管你的思想告訴你什么,你都可以擁有無限的愛)”可知,不管內(nèi)心告訴自己什么,都可以對自己有無限的愛,E項“關鍵是首先要無條件地愛自己”與上文語義一致,且符合全文主題。故選E項。

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficullt, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibity,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary — the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribusion” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the wordlist. “C-O-N-T-R-I-B-U-S-I-O-N,” he whispered. He spelled it wrong.
“What am I to do?” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master at spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back, or I’ll become an example for telling a lie.”
Staring at the full marks written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”

I made a mistake.” He stood up and handed his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper, “I spelled contribution with‘s-i’instead of‘t-i’.” Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk. Mr. White held up Peter’s test paper. “Class,” he said, “Peter did something ever more important than spelling every word correctly on a test.” Mr. White smiled at Peter, “He taught us all a lesson on being honest.”
Paragraph 2:
Peter looked around. He found many of his classmates were smiling at him. “Peter, I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example for all of us,” Mr. White said. Peter took the dictionary from his teacher and expressed his thanks to Mr. White. Meanwhile, he could’t wait to show it to Mum and tell her one of his best days ever.
