The Lucky Silk Scarf
Lena could clearly remember the night she had to leave her home in Hungary. It was the beginning of the Second World War and her family needed to escape(逃離) fast. She quickly packed a suitcase with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her most prized thing—a beautiful silk scarf. Lena and her best friend, Monika, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they each wore tied around their neck as a symbol of their friendship. Lena had no idea that when she left for America that night, she would never return. Her family settled on the sunny west coast in California.
Lena kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Lena was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but her granddaughter promised her, “Don’t worry, Grandma, nothing’s going to happen to your scarf. You’ll see. It is going to bring both of us luck today.” With that, Eliza kissed her grandmother on the cheek and left.
That afternoon, Eliza left the interview feeling confident that she had got the job. She decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. As she sat her table, she felt someone staring (叮著) at her. Sitting next to her was an elderly woman who could not take her eyes off her. “I’m sorry, do I know you?” Eliza asked. “I ‘m sorry, dear, but you remind me of someone I once knew, “the old woman replied in an accented voice. “My best friend looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like the one you’re wearing around your neck. “Eliza felt goose bumps go up her arms. She had heard stories of her grandmother’s best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf. Could this be Monika, her grandmother’s childhood friend?
Eliza introduced herself and waited to hear the name of the other woman. “My name’s Monika, dear. I’m from Hungary, but my family had to leave when I was 14and I’ve been living here in California ever since.” Eliza could not believe it. She said, “Monika, would you mind going somewhere with me? I want to show you someone very special.” The elderly woman agreed and they left the restaurant together.
24. The matching scarves of Lena and Monika________.

26. After Eliza and Monika left the restaurant, they would probably________.

The way the mind works is heavily influenced by culture, according to University of Michigan psychologist Richard Nisbett, author of The Geography of Thought: How Asians and Westerners Think Differently...and Why.
Richard Nisbett says that two people from different cultures can look at the same picture and see it in different ways. Culture also teaches people how to see and describe their experiences. Nisbett explains that Asians think differently from Westerners because their culture teaches them to be more aware of society, family, and historical background. Western culture, and especially American culture, tends to pay more attention to individual (個(gè)人的) success and being independent of family.
Nisbett argues that culture makes East Asians more holistic or global thinkers: When trying to understand a situation, they like to see the whole picture. They trust feelings and pay attention to relationships because these are valued highly in their culture.
However, Nisbett’s research has shown that Westerners tend to be more analytic(善于分析的). When they try to understand something, Westerners usually prefer to analyze small pieces of information first and build their knowledge piece by piece in order to understand the whole picture.
In study after study, Nisbett and colleagues from China, the Republic of Korea, and Japan found that East Asians and Americans responded in different ways to the same situation. In one experiment, Japanese and Americans viewed the same animated underwater scenes, and reported what they had seen. In the experiment, most of the Americans started by explaining the details, for example, saying there were large fish in the front on the right. However, the Japanese talked about the environment first, mentioning that there was a pond or a fish tank. The Japanese also talked more about the environment and inanimate(無生命的) objects than the Americans, for example, “The big fish swam past the gray seaweed.” This research proves the traditional idea that Americans are less interested in social background and place importance on the individual. The Japanese, on the other hand, place more importance on social background.
27. Nisbett may agree ________.
A .Asians pay less attention to society
B. Westerners focus more on individual success
C. Asians are less aware of historical background
D. Westerners are more dependent on their families
28. The word “holistic” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________.”
A. analysing a small piece
B. achieving a big success
C. considering a whole thing
D. valuing a good relationship
29. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Thinking Highly Enriches Culture
B. Culture Heavily Influences Thinking
C. Thinking Pushes Culture to Progress
D. Culture Matters More than Thinking
D
3D Printing Will Improve Our Food Choices
In early summer 2016, Londoners were treated to a new trend in dining. Food Ink, the world’s first 3D printing restaurant, opened to a special group of guests who dined on a nine-course meal prepared right before their eyes using 3D printers. Even the restaurant’s tables and chairs, lamps, cups, and plates were created with 3D technology. With London just the beginning, Food Ink plans to bring its creative restaurant form to a number of other cities around the world.
Like other 3D applications, printing food is a process that builds layers (層)upon layers of material on top of each other. Each layer is pushed through a print head to form an object with a desired shape, texture, size, and so on. Unlike other 3D printing, which uses spool(繞線輪) to create objects out of plastic, 1ooamaterials in 3D printing are put into a syringe-like container (注射器形狀的容器) which are then pressed into the shape required. Any food ingredients (原料) that can be pureed(煮成濃湯或者醬) or turned into a paste can be used in 3D food printing.
Fine dining is only one aspect of the food industry about to be improved by 3D printing. Researchers have been exploring ways to use 3D printing to deal with t world hunger. Mass production of food using powdered (粉末狀的) nutritional ingredients could help feed a growing population. The 3D-printed food would have the advantage of being produced cheaply and having a long shelf life. This is especially important with the world population projected to be 8.5 billion by 2030.
The technology will also enable consumers to quickly make meals with ingredients to suit their special health needs. Take the example of feeding elderly people, who often need to have their food pureed because they have problems with swallowing and chewing (咀嚼). Many elderly people did not like their food like this and so it discouraged them from eating. The Netherlands Organization for applied scientific research is turning to 3D printing to mash up peas, cabbages, and carrots to produce 3D-printed versions of the vegetables. These are easier to chew but hold their shape because of the addition of a gelling agent(膠凝劑). The3D-printed vegetables are being served throughout nursing homes in Germany.
It seems that there is no end to the potential(潛力) of 3D printing. In 2013, NASA offered a large amount of money to develop a functional 3D food printer. The printer aims to create nutritional food to feed astronauts on long space missions. From creating special restaurant meals, to improving nutrition, to potentially feeding the world, 3D food printing is creating exciting new possibilities for food.
30. According to the passage, 3D food printing differs from other 3D printing in________.
A. the way of creating objects out of materials
B. the desired shape of the 3D printed objects
C. the print heads for forming desired objects
D. the process of building layers of materials
31. What can we learn about 3D food printing?
A. 3D food printing solves the elders’ eating problems with pureed food.
B. 3D food printing is being developed for astronauts on space missions.
C. 3D food printing ends world hunger with its cheaply-produced food.
D. 3D food printing is being widely applied in fine dining restaurants.
32. What docs Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A. Elderly people like to choose 3D-printed versions of the vegetables.
B. Consumers can use 3D food printing quickly to make healthy meals.
C. The Netherlands Organization is doing research on 3D food printing.
D. 3D food printing technology will meet people’s special health needs.
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To explain how 3D food printing works.
B. To discuss what 3D food printing has brought us.
C. To show the possibilities created by 3D food printing.
D. To stress the importance of 3D food printing to the world.
It is the night before handing in the report, and Emily Regan still has to research and write the ten-page paper Emily’s problem is procrastination (拖延癥).She has waited to do her work until the very last second and now she is stressed and has to work through the night to complete her paper. Procrastination is a problem for many students, but it does not have to be., Instead of waiting to start your homework until just before the deadline, you can follow these simple steps to avoid procrastination.
First, do a little bit every day rather than all at once. For example, in Emily’s case, she could have spent 30 minutes a day working on that research paper and divided her work into parts. One week could have been spent doing research, one week writing an outline, one week writing the first draft(初稿),and the final week could have been spent finalizing the paper. Then, schedule(安排) that study time into your daily life. Treat your work like any other fun activities you have. Remember, you are the boss and it is up to you to follow your schedule. Be responsible for yourself and do not make any other plans during the time you have set aside that will prevent you from doing your work.
Once you have organized your time in this way, it is important to find a place to work where there are few distractions (干擾). For example, if you are writing a paper, do not go on the Internet to check your email or see who else is online, and do not stay in a room where there is a TV. Instead, focus on the work you planned for that time. Then you can reward(獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)) yourself for your hard work by doing whatever you want-emailing, chatting with friends, or watching television. You will probably enjoy yourself more because you will not have the work hanging over your head and stressing you out.
Although procrastination is a common mistake that many students make, do not put yourself in Emily’s shoes and leave work until the last minute. It is easy to make some simple changes in the way you work to prevent it from happening.
34. What does Emily Regan have to do the night before handing in the report?
35. What is the first thing you can do to avoid procrastination?
36. How can you reward yourself for your hard work?
37. What do you think of procrastination? What do you suggest people do to avoid procrastination? (List at least two ways)

題目①
Nowadays, there are many ways of reading. Among them, I like reading e-books the best. There are several reasons. First, we can easily download new books from Internet. It is much easier and quicker to search for the passages we want to read. And we can also write notes or mark some important information in an e-book. Moreover, a number of books can be stored in a small machine, which is easy to take. Last but not least, e-books save a lot of paper and are good for the environment. But e-book readers are still more expensive than paper books, so not all people can afford them. However, with the rapid development of electronic technology, e-book readers will become cheaper and cheaper. A lot of people think there will be more e-books than paper books in the near future. In short, no matter which way you choose, I hope you can feel the joy of reading.
題目②
Everyone has their own dreams. For me, I want to be an English teacher when I grow up. In order to realise my dream, I make a list of things I need to do, then I follow my plan. For example, I take an active part in class activities and communicate with teachers and classmates in English as much as possible. What's more I take every opportunity to show myself in front of people. I think if I want to be a teacher, I should have the ability and courage to speak out in public. I also try to help my classmates with their study so that I can exercise my thinking ability.
By doing these things, I have not only improved my English but also developed my communication skills. I can express my ideas quickly and clearly in English now. A clear goal guides me better plan my study and life, and helps me feel a sense of success in different areas of life.
